By the way, about the Gale/Peeta decision, I really felt like Gale and Katniss were drifting apart in the last book. I don't know if it was just me, but it seemed like Finnick was her new bff. Katniss sought out Finnick in her time of need, and Finnick was (I think) the only person to make her laugh Catching Fire on. Which is why I think Finnick's death deserved a little more, but what can you do. They just were drifting farther and farther apart, and the whole possibly killed her beloved little sister just shattered the remnants of their relationship. I also didn't like Gale and Katniss' dynamic. Whenever they were together, it just became this echo chamber of angst and anger.
Also, does anyone know what bronze hair is supposed to look like? What color is that supposed too be? Is it really so hard to say brown/blond/red/green/whatever instead of bronze?

I was beginning to think that Finnick was starting to become her new bff since they did laugh a lot together. I keep wondering the same thing with bronze hair... It never made sense at all to me.

So has my dad. He's somewhere in the middle of the book. I've just finished Mockingjay this morning. It's a really interesting series, but the writing is okayish. Now I can't wait for the movie to come out.

And can I have that blow dryer from the Capitol that dries and untangles my hair in seconds and makes into a silken sheet? PLEASE?
Rereading the first book, got to Katniss finding Peeta and PUS IS THE WORST WORD IN THE ENGLISH DICTIONARY. Urgh. Am I the only one who thinks the names are supposed to relate to the districts? i.e. Finnick=Fin= District 4!

I would also like that machine in the capital, only I'm not sure how it would work on curly hair.

I wonder how Mark is going to react when we find out how awesome Finnick is. I eagerly anticipate his reaction to the end of Catching Fire. I'm glad I didn't have to wait a year. That would have killed me.

That would have killed me. Same here. Maybe there are some drawbacks to checking out books when the series is over with? The only downside is that a lot of reviews on Amazon had spoilers. From experience, I know that waiting for every single HP book that came out was painful enough; I nearly drove my parents crazy to the point that they started buying a lot of wizard related books to keep me from rereading HP. If I had to wait for each Hunger Games book to come out, I would probably be driving my friends nuts.

I rented the first book from the library yesterday, got completely obsessed with it, and finished it at about eleven last night. I rented book two this morning and I'm around a quarter of the way through. So far, Cinna is my favorite, hands down. He's just got that vibe that radiates awesomeness. I also like that he doesn't buy into the Capitol's crazy fashions. And his name reminds me of cinnamon rolls. I've also heard from my friend who's read the whole trilogy that he gets even awesomer.
One of the things I really loved about the first book was the way it completely drew me in. I almost literally couldn't put it down. Just before the Games started, my heart was racing in anticipation, almost like I was the one about to face certain doom.
So far, Catching Fire is proving interesting, but not as much as the first book. The biggest problem I've got, though (and this is hardly Suzanne Collins' fault), is that one of the praise-quotes on the back is from SMeyer.
EDIT: Oh, they did NOT make the Quarter Quell use victors! Those frikkin' BITCHES!

I am three quarters of the way through the first book. Now I get why people say it's addicting - something about it has stopped me from putting it down.
There are parts though, that really stretch my suspension of disbelief. - No matter how awesome Katniss looks on fire, I really don't believe the audience would react like that. Okay, they get entertainment out of the games like we do out of reality TV. But you know the thing about reality TV? We don't actually care that much for the contestants. Sure, we like one or two of them, we pick of favourite and hope they win, but we wouldn't cheer their names. Reality TV is popular because we enjoy seeing people - espcially divas and wannabe celebrities - being put through hell. I honestly just can't believe there would be crowds of people throwing roses at the contestants.
- Similarly, I'm not buying the Capitol. Too much of a constrast between it and the districts. Okay, I'll buy that it's more well off, since it is the capital and where all the political leaders would be. I easily buy the "since the world has colapsed we can't help everyone, just because the lower districts have to rough it a little doesn't mean we should". But come on, they have the technology and money to dye people's skin green. While way back in District Elven and Twelve, people are dying of starvation on regular occasion and being whipped.
- Lastly, the amount of time dedicated to talking about food. Between when they arrive in the Capitol and the games start, there is so much talking about food. Eating food. I get that Katniss hasn't eaten so well in her entire life, but there is just too much of it. It just makes all the characters look like gluttons. The Gamemakers drinking and eating while they were supposed to be marking the tributes, when supposedly the games are very important in Panem? Really don't buy it.

Personally I'm in love with this series but that's just me. As regards to the last book being darker and Katniss being different, well yeah. She was a bit different ineach of the books. She had to go into the arena twice and drove her insane. Then there was the whole Peeta thing. She thought he was either dead or being tortured by the capital. Not to mention she didn't like being underground. All the the things she endured caused her to be the way she was in Mockingjay. I dunno. I liked it. But that's just me I spose.

Well remember, these are people who are completely obsessed with anything they deem "cool-" most of them look insanely bizarre themselves. So something as original as a "girl on fire" really gets them going. Add to that that this is the same girl who's already got people interested in her by volunteering to save her sister, and you can at least sort of see where they're coming from.
The Hunger Games is a metaphor for the Roman Empire-Hunger Games=gladiator games, etc. "Panem" is actually latin for bread, as in "bread and circuses," the term for the gladiator games. The people of the Capitol are the Patricians-wealthy enough to be able to spend massive amounts on luxury, such as dying one's skin green. Roman Patricians were similar. The people of the Districts are the Plebians (don't you love that word?), slaves, and urban poor-little to no money, often starve to death so that the upper class can live in luxury. That's how it actually was in ancient Rome, so that's how Suzanne Collins made it in Panem.
Again, this is based off the Roman Empire. The Gamemakers and citizens of the Capitol (as stated above) are the wealthy upper class. In Rome, the wealthy upper class were friggin' pigs. They spent tons of money on luxury foods like parrot tongue (no, I'm not making that up). When they had parties, they had parties. They even had these things called vomitoriums into which you could barf in order to stuff yourself again (they have something similar but more high-tech in book two). The Capitol citizens are pigs because the Roman Patricians were.
Also, just finished book two and, NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Cinna died!!!!! *bawls*

I can believe they'd sponsor the tributes, bet on them like animals, enjoy seeing how the next would die, even sit through an interveiw. But I can't believe they would act as if they loved a tribute, when they know she will go into that arena and become a killing machine. But this is set at the end of the world. They're not just a rich country that's behind the rest, there might not even be a rest. I have no read the second or third book, so I'm still sketchy on this part, but I know this future is not a plesant one and theresn't something about landmass shifting and water levels rising. There might not be that many countries left to trade with, which is why they're starving and have the creation of good specifically handed out to districts. If people in the Capitol were just slightly better off, or what seems standard now, I'd buy it. But the way it's described, this is technology from WALL-E. It just doesn't make sense that they'd be able to create this, while across the country there are people who think goats milk is rich. You can have a world where there is a gigantic gap between the classes, and you can have a futurist world where the planet has gone to pot and you have to accept some people will have to rough it. But you can't put them together.
I'm still not a fan of it. I'd accept indivdual cases. Like if the Gamemakers ate while they watched everyone train, but not while they gave them an estimated score. And how she goes into describing every meal they eat. So many important conversations happened at a dinner table when they didn't need to. Katniss friggin' orded food when she was angry, and ate herself sick, then started throwing plates around. You'd think a girl who spent her whole life having to find her food, who would have starved if it wasn't for the boy she was mad at at the time, would know the importance of food. Even if she was trying to fatten up for the games.

I honestly just can't believe there would be crowds of people throwing roses at the contestants. This is an interesting thought; are the reactions of the Capitol citizens too over the top for reality tv? My first instinct would be to say no, because this is sort of their main source of entertainment and it is clear that these people are OTT by nature, they have so much time and money to waste. Also if you think about the biggest reality shows, like X Factor or American Idol, there is that sort of huge fixation and idolisation of the favourite contestants. On the other hand reality show favourites/winners are always transient and people get bored with them and move on very quickly, sometimes even before the reality show is finished. This doesnt seem to happen in THG. Maybe we're supposed to chalk up the Capitol's reactions as part of Collins' ~future~ world and the fact they're rich and bored, but is rich and bored enough motivation for them to act like they do?

Well, she may go a bit over the top, but she's also trying to make it as Rome-like as possible. And in Rome, there was a gigantic gap between rich and poor. And yes, it did depend on which class you were born into.

Well, she may go a bit over the top, but she's also trying to make it as Rome-like as possible. And in Rome, there was a gigantic gap between rich and poor. And yes, it did depend on which class you were born into. The Rome parts don't bother me. In fact, it adds a nice bit of depth to it. However, we've also got to take into account the chaotic future aspect. I can totally get a series that's set in a future where the world didn't corupt, we just kept advancing our technology and ability to "perfect" ourselves. Then say, we started relying on machines that would do calculations with our genes and decide our life-long job at infant hood. So people from well off families who breed for "perfect" genes get nice cushy jobs that require high intelligence or good looks, while the poorer people get the jobs that nobody wants. You could still have the same obession with looks, and messing with your body, and all that sleek technology, but it would make so much more sense. Because as corupt as that world may be, it's not a world that's come about after the "end of the world". I actually find most of the book to be quite realistic. At least Katniss is as rough as you'd expect someone in her situation. It's the parts where the author tries to make the comparisons to Rome that seem to fail. Excuse the cheesiness, but perhaps the future should not mix with the past.

I just overlooked all the unrealistic things because it was generally a unrealistic book series. Plus I just liked it so much that I'm willing to over look things. Me too. It filled my dark fiction void that I've been lacking, and I like nightmare fuel. Plus it's a guilty pleasure thing I have. I liked the book series so much that I went out on the week of Christmas Eve to get Catching Fire and Mockingjay. It's one of the few books that I've read and liked that I didn't get bashed and personal attacked over at my school. If it gets popular and gets more insane fanbrats, I'll start distancing myself from it for that.

Haha, I'm actually rather obsessed with it at the moment. But that happens with a lot of books for me. But I still can't believe they killed Cinna! I mean, he was the coolest character ever!
Anyway, I think I'll finally be able to check out Mockingjay today. Hooray!

RANDOM: I just realized that "Walk Through the Fire" from the Buffy the Vampire musical episode would be an awesome theme song for Katniss. Or possibly just the whole series. And "The Technicolor Phase" by Owl City would work for Cinna (<3)

I love the entire series, but the third book not as much. I probably need to reread it, but what I didn't understand was Why did Katniss kill Coin? And was anyone else disappointed that neither Peeta or Gale died? One of them should've died, by my opinion. The whole book was pretty confusing for me. Also, you're lucky for not having to wait for all the books to come out.

My impression was that Katniss killed Coin because life under her would be no better than in the Capitol. This. Generally though on the topic of the third book, I agree with you. I found it disappointing and god the ending was horrible. On a slight tangent but still related, Im surprised Mark isn't finding more problems with the book. He's about at the point now where I started wtfing and having issues with almost all the characters.

I FINALLY FINISHED THE SERIES! Oy, it took forever for the library to get the third book. Actually, they still don't have it; I just borrowed it from someone. You know, it's weird-I used to like Gale way better than Peeta, but at the end I kind of hate Gale and find Peeta a lot more tolerable.

Why did Katniss kill Coin? And was anyone else disappointed that neither Peeta or Gale died? One of them should've died, by my opinion. Why? I have not read the book yet, but I know how it goes.
Why did one of them need to die? Katniss had already lost her sister, and she'd never be able to look at Gale the same way again. Actually, Gale being alive seems worse. If he's dead, she can think "I loved him, but he's gone now and I have to move on", if he's still alive she just has to accept someone she once cared deeply for did something bad, and all the happiness they shared won't make up for the fact it hurt her deeply.
As for Peeta, wouldn't that make everything Katniss did pointless? The berries, the Quarter Quell, pretending to be in love? It's like getting to the last level of a really hard, no-save game and the power going out. You'd want to throw the controler against the wall. Katniss would snap.
Them both surviving, but having grief and issues and flashbacks seems much better in my opinion. More real.
Agreed. Killing one of them would have been an easy way out.

So I found myself completely obsessed with The Hunger Games Trilogy, and wouldn't put it down for eating, and even reading for hours on end during breaks. Here are my thoughts: The Hunger Games; The beginning I wasn't all tied in yet. Didn't like how Katniss treated her mother, but I actually liked Katniss throughout the entire series. I never felt she was "sooper speshul" or anything like that because she had real flaws that "Miss Bella Swan" didn't have and not everyoneliked her, nor did everyone just agree to everything she did and challenged her. I loved the cliffhangers and the shocks I received such as Prim being chosen for the games, and Katniss taking her place. I became Team Peeta the moment he announced his "love" for her during the interview, and he had me from there. The Games themselves were brutal, I hated the Capitol and everything it stood for for putting people through that shit. I loved it at the same time though and overall, loved the book and I rushed to Barnes and Noble to get the second. As far as Characters go:Katniss: One of my favorite characters in the books. Didn't hate or dislike her once. I found her decisions the majority of the time to be realistic, and the other half to be over the top and delusional but what do you expect from a 16-17 year old girl who just survived two hunger games, watched all those deaths of those she cared about and is a target for the government? Also, I think Katniss is just a hard shell. Inside, she's very emotional and it's believable. No one can be that strong. She's had to be the mother for years for Prim and make sure to keep her family alive by any means. This can't be good on her at all. I felt for her. Peeta: Alright, who else decidedly hated Peeta when he teamed up with Cato and the others? I seriously thought Kat had been right and he was only using that whole love thing as a ploy. Of course, a part of me was hoping I was wrong. And I was. =D I love, LOVE Peeta. I love his camouflage, I love his baking abilities. I love his reason, and how he balances Kat out. <3333 He's just amazing. Haymitch: When he first came into the picture, I was all "eh" okay Haymitch. But I ended up ADORING him. That drunken man. XD He's awesome x100. And clever to with his Hunger Games victory. But what President Snow did to him afterwards was awful. Gale: Okay, I didn't care for Gale TOO much. I never hated him, but I bordered on it sometimes. I felt he and Katniss were too much alike to be more than friends. I felt he was one side of an extreme and she was another without any balance. I knew he meant well though so I couldn't really dislike him all the time. But overall, his presence was the least interesting to me. The Stylists Like Kat said, I can't hate them. They're just so...childish in a way. It's cute. I think Venia is the more intelligent one of the bunch though. Cinna: Oh Cinna. Cinna, Cinna Cinna. WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DIE?! I WAS DENYING IT THE ENTIRE BOOK UNTIL IT ENDED. I COMPLETELY DID A *COVERS EARS AND BABBLES LALALALALA* WHEN YOU GOT KNOCKED OVER THE HEAD! WHY CINNA WHY?!!!! I loved Cinna; period. He was always amazing to Kat. His outfits were amazing. <333 TEAM CINNA. Prim: I am COMPLETELY DEVASTATED that she was killed. In that chapter I had no idea she'd died until Katniss said so. I thought Kat was on fire, and not Prim. I just...I STILL can't believe it. I just finished the book like an hour ago and I'm just...hollow. The ending was so empty to me even though deep down I'm glad Keeta (yes keeta not peenis or katpee >>) ended up together, but it just was overshadowed by Prims death. At least in my eyes. Prim in Mockingjay was brilliant. We didn't get much on her before that, so when we finally saw her colors, I just liked her a lot. She was reasonable and calm like her father apparently had been. She was so positive and a wonderful mature little sister. TEAM PRIM. Finnick FINIIICCCKKKKK. FINNNICCCCKKKKKKKKK. *wails* WHYYYYY!!!!! FOR GODSAKE COLLINS WHY NOT JUST JAM A STAKE THROUGH MY HEART?! >:[!! I LOVED FINNICK GODAMNIT! AND YOU KILLED HIM! I'LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU! Johanna I hated her at first. But eventually I warmed up to her. found her sarcasm witty and entertaining. glad she didn't die. Beetee and Wiress Sad about Wiress, we barely knew her. Beetee rules. end of story. Catching Fire; I liked this book, and I was shocked when they were sent back into the hunger games , and when peeta died, i was so shocked, but it was a hilarious scene when katniss thought finnick was kissing peeta, but he was giving CPR. XDDD This book was tragic. I liked it. Mockingjay; I've decided I thought this one was the weakest of the bunch and even though Peeta and Katniss got married I feel everything was just so CONVENIENT. I wanted Katniss to realize Peeta was best for her anyways, not an end result of her not being able to look at Gale the same way. I also felt like Prims death meant more than them being together in the end and that she should have been mentioned in the epilogue . Overall, this book was incredibly tragic and heartwrenching for me. Cannot wait for the movies and I do hope they do well.

^Most of that is seconded by me, except for the Team Peeta. What I really like about the Peeta Vs. Gale is that Collins managed to make me Team Peeta by the end even though I can't stand him at first (he's all right in the Hunger Games, but completely unbearable in Catching Fire, then he's fine in Mockingjay, in my opinion).
