Black Beauty was written by Anna Sewell, and it was her only novel before she died three months after its publication in 1878 due to severe health problems she struggled with throughout her life.
Black Beauty is told through the eyes of Black Beauty himself --a black horse with a distinct white star on his forehead and small sock on his front right fetlock, who travels from home to home as he grows, describing his life experiences with different owners and people in 19th-century England. Throughout his journey he meets many new faces, both good and bad, and reunites with the one true friend he never thought he'd see again after countless years of abuse from different owners. The book also establishes the time period in which the author wrote and the ignorance of man based upon how they treat animals as well as people.

This is by far one of my favorite books, and I first got into the story when I was little after seeing the 1994 movie version by Warner Brothers Pictures. Not only do I love the movie but I also adore the book and as always it beats the films by a landslide, simply because the book digs deeper into the characters, both human and animal. I highly recommend it if you haven't read it, especially if you're into horses.

I liked Black Beauty because even though Black Beauty was made into more of a human, it still seems very realistic. Although I will say that the Black Beauty x Ginger thing was very much a stretch, the other things felt natural to me as someone who works with horses on a weekly basis. It had a great emotional story to tell, it's only unfortunate that still many people have not seen the movie and/or read the book.
Anna herself seemed very revolutionary in the way she saw animals, as most of the "bad characters" in her book showcase the way it used to be.
