To be honest, what surprises me the most about this story is how deeply unoriginal it is. It is pretty much standard fanfiction. Poorly written fanfiction at that. I guess I'm just a little confused as to why people are willing to pay money to read this story, when they could go online and read hundreds of fanfics like it for free.

Why did people buy Twilight when they could read billions of fanfics like it for free? Mostly because people never heard of fan fics, for one.

^ Agreed. I didn't know that Britney or Ella Fitzegerald was on that author's playlist. I don't want them to be tainted with this series like how Muse and Death Cab for Cutie was tainted with the Twilight Saga. I used to write AU Pokemon fanfics (about the trainers living in a world without Pokemon) when I was in my early teens. I wouldn't dream trying to legitly publish that. Once again, I can't express how shocked am I that 50 Shades of Grey is popular.
EXACTLY! LOL. Lets all start sending in our fan fics to be published! Just change the names and it's all cool. Don't worry about how you are stealing someone elses ideas and using their franchise to get popular.
I love fan fic. I love to write it. Which is why this offends me so much. This is a fun hobby, it's not a career lol. It doesn't make you a writer. An original story and original characters does.

I'd happily send in "Children of Torchwood Book 1: Without Wax" if I was still in contact with the co-author. Hey, it IS a fixfic after all and I know there are still a few thriving communities which want Ianto back! Why not give the public what they want?

slave4vamps Agreed so much. Definitely not good for a career. Especially when it's almost hiding plagiarism. Now I can see why some authors, like Ann Rice, don't like people writing fanfic of their books and movies. If someone did that to my original work, I'd be so mad about it.

And here's the quote from the EW mag:
I find it almost funny that they're pointing the abusive behavior considering the book that inspired the fan fic first.

All we can say is, where the bleep is the humor? All it's about is sex, sex, sex and more sex with a heavy dose of abuse disguised by BSDM. I have to agree with most of the 1021 one star reviews. The only thing I can think of that would count as humor is the apparent existence of two other personalities within Ana: her Inner Bitch and her Subconscious (I think that's what they're called). I found about them via "katie reads fifty shades" on youtube. They might be funny in their utter absurdity. The way I understand it (not having read any of the books), her Subconscious is the bookish one who always seems to be reading classics (Dickens, Bronte, etc.) and her Inner Bitch should be called The Horny One, because she is only mentioned in conjunction with sexual arousal. The Inner Bitch comes off as absurd because the author, I think, tries to expound on the "turning somersaults" imagery by using images like "my Inner Bitch stretched and flexed, preparing to carry the pole across the track to pole vault across the bar." I don't think that's verbatim, but it is equally as absurd. Inner Bitch always seems to be doing really interesting things, probably in preparation for some kind of sports tournament, and the reader only gets little snippets of it.

reniefuwa What... That almost makes me want to get the book to find those quotes to verify them. Also one person on Goodreads was trying to tell me that that relationship is healthy for being a Dom and Sub relationship and that the main character was very relatable. Just no that man is being a straight up abusive control freak. I know a little bit of BSDM from being a romance novel addict, and that really is pushing it too far. Also my friends have been wanting me to read the book series.

^ Just don't buy them brand new, or get them from a different source. You don't want to support what is, essentially, crap literature. I'm guessing you watched the "katie reads" videos, right? Those asides about her Inner Bitch seem pretty non sequitor to me, like something I would put in one of my fanfics for a random silly laugh (I literally used an 'Inner Edward' when I did a Twilight rewrite) , but not anything I would put into a story meant to be taken seriously.

If I get 50 Shades series, it will be from my local used book store. I still have to sell my House of the Night, Twilight, Modelland and Halo books there. I get all the crappy books from that store. They must think I have bad taste in literature. lol
Hopefully that used book store will 50 Shades have them in stock because there is no f'cking way I'm paying $15.50 a book at Barnes and Noble. For that much I bought myself two collections of erotic short stories and book on Ninja history.

I have a slightly different dilemma:
I get a scholarship of £200 per semester to use on books. I get my regular course books, and they come to about £80, maybe £100. The campus book shop - John Smith's - is selling 50 Shades of Shit for £7, going down to £2 tomorrow in the skinbins just outside the shopfront. Now, would it count as ME buying the trash, or would I basically be getting it for free since it's not technically my money?

^I count that as wasting your free money on trash when that's supposed to go to course books and necessities.

^ Also, depending on the type, certain scholarships for school supplies /only/ allow you to get things that are school-necessary. Of which, I doubt this tripe is included.

^I can spend it on anything I want so long as John Smith's sells it. I've worked out that my books for next year will come to about £150 so I'll have £50 left over, and at the end of each semester they sell regular reading books which students are encouraged to buy as a 'reward' or 'cool-off' for themselves.

^ Apparently, it's originally a Twilight fanfiction, and they didn't edit out the original names in all the places before publishing. Haven't read it, but that's what I've gathered from following the thread. >.>

Yes that's what it is Zax, it was an AU Twilight fic about Edward and Bella. She just decided to change the names and sell it.

YES! Seriously I get so annoyed when people try to bash Anne for that or disrespect those wishes. You have to understand those characters are all deeply personal to her, she put so much into creating them. It's just too strange for her to see people writing for them when they are a part of her really.

You have to understand those characters are all deeply personal to her, she put so much into creating them. It's just too strange for her to see people writing for them when they are a part of her really. And yet she publish her books where people can do what she doesn't want them to do with her characters. Also: "This statement was then followed up by attacks on Anne Rice fanfic authors. The attacks consisted of, amongst other things, e-mailed threats regarding not only the writing of fanfiction but any writing that any fanfic author attempted to engage in (regardless of who owned the copyright), attacks on businesses that the fanfic authors owned and weeks of harassing personal letters sent to fanfic author's e-mail addresses and guestbooks. Personal information about fanfic authors was also dug up by Anne Rice employees and used as part of the harassment. Suffice it to say, Anne Rice made her displeasure clear." --- If this is true, you're angry when people bash her? The last time I'm checked harassing and threating people is illegal. I'm glad I never read her books if she's going to act like that to her fans, of all people.
Quotes from two nice people: "I suppose the character is public ground. If you're willing to bring it into people's houses every week, the fans are entitled to certain liberties, where ever their imagination is carried by those characters." --Paul Gross, aka Ben Fraser and Executive Producer of Due South, quoted in the Toronto Globe & Mail, August 8, 1998.
"I've read some of it... I find it very flattering that people love the characters that much." - J.K. Rowling on Harry Potter fanfiction that can be found via the Internet. Fall 2000.

Hey guys, I've not read 50 Shades of Grey and don't intend to, but here's a funny video I found to lighten the thread sightly.
I can never eat an ice lolly again. Either that woman or Gilbert Gottfried should be the readers for Fifty Shades' audiobooks. LOVE the top comment:

It's not a love story. It's not a BDSM story. It's a rape story. END of story. All you have to do is look at the contract and realize that James has NO CLUE what she is talking about, BDSM-wise. Submissive contract my ass--that's a SLAVE contract, and there is a BIG DIFFERENCE between a submissive and a slave. And that is hardly the end of it. But I'm not the one to tell you all that is wrong with this book. They are.

I can never eat an ice lolly again. Lmao!!! XD At her hiccups! XDD Yeah. I agree with her. I've read better read fanfic lemons than that thing. XP I just hate it when someone describes something that has something to do about sex by comapring it with food. That doesn't sound hot. It sounds gross.

I've been reading Ket and Gehayi's recap of it. I've yet to get to the BDSM parts, but I'm just blown away by how obviously it was Twilight fanfiction, and how lazy they were with editing it for publication.
I mean, sure all references to vampires are gone, but we have all the same character dynamics. Ana has a hare-brained mother who can barely function, she has an ethnic minority best friend who's in love with her, but she barely gives him a sideways glance, Christian is adopted into a rich family, it goes on forever. You could still tell the story, without these Twilight rip off details, so why have them? Oh yeah, James was lazy.
My personal favorite has to be the VAN O' DOOM, being turned into a BIKE O' DOOM. And them treating it like she was almost run over by a van. I loled so hard.
