WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO--BOTH ARE STILL HUMAN RIGHT? IT'S JUST THAT BLACK PEOPLE ARE AT THE--*bluescreen*
Also is it just me or does it sound like the Aztecs were randomly thrown in?

Also is it just me or does it sound like the Aztecs were randomly thrown in? It does. Even though their civilization was destroyed in 1520...Is she just talking about whoever's left of the Nahuatl? I doubt it. I don't think the author's intelligent enough to even know that the Aztec lived in what is now Mexico (named for the Mexica). Well, here's hoping that they sacrifice Eden so that this racist, horrific excuse for a story will be over soon. And I know what you mean about the bluescreen. Thinking about the author's "logic" for any amount of time only results in massive brainhurt.

And perhaps it's a bit late to bring up (I'm certainly not going to read the book to look for it) but does Bramford ever find out she's a "pearl"? Like does she come clean with him or does he find out otherwise? Then again, with how the book sounds in general, that sort of scenario would have meant potential for good writing...

Um, apparently the award is the "2012 Eric Hoffer Young Adult Award!" I don't think I've heard of that one. How many awards are out there, again?

As a person of color that hasn't read this book I can say with almost 100% accuracy that being called a 'Pearl' isn't a degrading term and being called a 'Coal' is. Even though pearls are just built up sand in an oyster(I probably oversimplifying this or got it wrong), they are/were a symbol of wealth.(I say 'were' because it's mostly about diamonds now.) I don't think you see people walking around wearing pieces of coal around their necks do you? So why use those words to describe two racially different groups? There are so many more words to use that would have had the same visceral reaction than those.
Also, from the video, what is so wrong with mating with a member of your own race that you'd rather die?

^Pearls are also associated with purity. And coal is generally associated with being dirty.
Seriously, I've never heard anyone use pearls in any sort of negative way before this book.

Also, and this is just hearsay, wasn't there a part in the story where Bramford grabs Eden's arm, pulling her, and she turns around and says something to the affect of "get your hands off me you damn coal"?
If that is true, then why are people saying that being a Coal in the story is being better when it''s used in a derogatory manner?

Plot hole: Apparently her dad's a scientist in some complex field since the second book mentions research Eden's dad is doing. Even if they were "Pearls" shouldn't the family be more well-off than what the books suggest...?

This book seems to be approaching that Twilight-esque combination of offensive/bad. There's the obvious racism, but the book itself doesn't seem to hold up to scrutiny. What do you guys think?

When I looked up the book on Amazon, I noticed a lot of praises and an INTERVIEW with the author. But when I scrolled down to the ratings there were mostly 1 star reviews. When I read the interview with the author I read her saying she wasn't racist and to prove that she said she was liberal and voted for Obama. That implies she thinks anyone who isn't liberal (or democrat) is racist. And I'm later in the shower thinkin', "What a close-minded bitch." And right now I'm thinkin':

So, are the Aztecs/coals/whatever not human? Or is it just the "pearls" that need to become non-human to survive? Or does hybrid human imply being multiple races? But why would that make you a "beast" when you're still human since people being multiple races is a normal thing?
No matter which way you slice it, it's filled with unfortunate implications and makes my head hurt.
EDIT: Or are the Coals and Aztecs separate? Did she (wisely) ditch the whole coal thing completely? Owww... My brain.

^ Honey, don't try to bring logic into this. Logic and "Save the Pearls" are matter and antimatter and should never come into contact. All that can result is pain.

I'm just wondering where the fuck these glowing reviews and rewards CAME from. This book is massive heap of dung that has been shot to death for it's racism --including blackfacing for advertizement.
Who the fuck gave her all these 5* awards?

Who the fuck gave her all these 5* awards? People with a weird sort of humor, maybe. At parts it's almost like they say the opposite of what 1-star-raters critizise, or they gloss over the same points. They praise how the world is described in great detail, while the others say that scenes are sketchy and that a lot about how the world functions is never touched, as well as the history being unclear. I like how one of them praises Eden for being "feisty". Every critic says she's a completely hateful bitch who screws with everyone's plans for no reason at all, acts the most racist, shows no compassion towards other minorities, constantly accuses people of wanting to attack her even though nobody ever does, constantly compares blacks to animals and always insults the person who continues to save her life. Feisty. It's quite interesting to read the 5-stars and 1-star reviews back to back... So Foyt said blacks were called "coals" because in this world, gemstones are useless and coal is necessary to survive. But a critic said this was never established in the books at all. Even if it was, is this good writing? For us readers, pearl has only positive connotations, and if you want to be clever and turn a compliment into a racist slur, you need a damn good explanation that we can buy into. Pearl sounds like pureness, rarity and beauty. Maybe it would be an insult if used ironically or in Full Metal Jacket, but here, why not say chalk? It's worthless white dirt ruining your machines. Now make it so white people can barely afford coal, and mention how hard it is to live without it, and how everything runs on coal. Help us buy into the world. I haven't read the book, but is there an explanation for this? : How does being black make you the dominant race and everyone else useless? Desert folks COVER THEIR SKIN, Australians beneath the ozon layer never leave the house without a hat, regardless of color. The powers of melanin don't block sunburns in such conditions, and it doesn't help against boiling heat at all. If other races DIE OUT because of UV rays, blacks won't fare much better. Even if they do, even if it made them much better surface-workers, wouldn't that just force them into the working-class-role even more? In history and even today, working classes are among the most necessary, but usually end up being exploited and a bottom-of-the-barrel-class. Even today, whites are minorities in some countries, but often among the most influental. How is this so different in the book?

Apparently black people are immune to sun-radiaion, according to the author. Yes, I know how this this is bs and the reviewers pointed that out too.
In fact, it's so bad, that I actually buy "sparkling vampires" with "diamond hard skin". Yes, please, bring back the sparklypricks, I miss them very much compared to this scientific dung heap.

Yeah, at least the Twilight vampires weren't offensive to certain races. Or at least as directly offensive as this.

What? How the hell did she get the idea with black people being immune to sun radiation?
Also. Is this an alternate universe where the black people were still looked down upon and the white people suddenly started declining they found the chance to take charge and shun the remaining white people? What about the Asian people? Did they not exist to begin with or something? Does she even know what Asians are? What century is this? If it takes place in this universe in the future, wouldn't racism have been gone by now? And why the name Pearl as an insult and Coal as a compliment? It sounds terrible. Why not Ghosts and Onyx instead? And why is it just humans? I don't want to buy the book and waste my money, okay?

Sorry for the necro but wtf kind of summary did I just read (I read all 3 pages). I must thank you all for posting this topic because after reading it, I don't think I would want to read the book. I want to know what drugs the author was taking.

^ALL of the drugs. Especially during her social studies classes. And extra especially during the civil rights sections. It's the only explanation I got.

^ALL of the drugs. Especially during her social studies classes. And extra especially during the civil rights sections. It's the only explanation I got. That would explain a lot of things. Like there is no way that anyone can possibly think like that with a sober brain. Obiviously she had to be very stoned and hammered. And that would explain all the 5 star reviews. People were given those drugs in exchange for their reviews.
