Zephyrine was more than pleased to finally get back inside. Even if a zombie had to attack them, only to get fucked up by a robot's chest Gatling guns. Actually, that needed to be a justification for more things, really. If it hadn't been for the whole "waking up with no skin, sore, hungry and bleeding in the middle of the desert" that would've been enough for Zeph to have said she had a good day. But, no. Desert. Pain. Hunger.
At least she was indoors again. As Brian was wheeled off to the infirmary, the rest of them were shown a rec room...which Zeph thought was really, really nice. WAY better than a lot of places she'd spent time in. Couches, TV, carpeting....an aquarium? This was practically the lap of luxury for her. Even if most of it wasn't working.
The aquarium was at least somewhat working. And Oz seemed to want them to play with the toys in it, so Z figured she should. She picked the Orca. Partly because the mammal's black and white made sense with her black pod and bandages...and partly because any animal that had killer in it's NAME had to be awesome. And Killer Whales certainly were, as far as she knew. They fucked sharks up!

"Mister Stark." Oz appeared in the central cylinder, looking down. "Please place Mister Jones on the operating table. Mister Miles, if you could lift your leg up onto this counter, I will clean, disinfect, and bandage your leg."
One of the operating arms, one of them with needles, started to reach out for Brian. He grabbed Ryans arm and tried to say something between sobs. "Wait... the girl in the pink pod... what was her name?"
Oz paused a moment. "I will need to sedate you Mister Jones, please remain still."
"What was her name?"
"Her name was Lucy Grace. She was eighteen years old, living with her older sister. She suffered from a hormonal deficit that made her appear much younger. I had hoped that the process would work for her because of her hormonal levels. I estimated wrong, and I failed her." Oz said somberly.
"Lucy..." Brian started to sob again and the needle went into his arm. "At least somebody knew. I'm Brian Jones Junior... my father never actually gave me a name... White was better than Junior... if it meant remembering Lucy..."
"Restrain him while the sedative takes effect, and attempt to clean the wounds on his face." Oz instructed, "Once he is still, I will attempt to suture the claw marks on his forehead and cheek, but repairs for the optical lenses will take... extensive time and effort. He may never recover."

Ryan held on tight to Brian, attempting to console him as he was put on the operating table.
"Brian... That's a nice name..." Ryan gave a queasy smile. "But if you want to be called White, I'll call you that."
He kept his hold on him, in a sort of embrace to keep him rested. He nodded Oz's words, and kept repeating them to himself, both to remember and as a... way to cope.
"He may never recover... how?" He asked, finally. "...He'll live, right?"

"I do not believe that his life is in danger." Oz replied, manipulating the robotic arms to try to wick out some of the blood from Brian's eye sockets. Other arms with tiny cutting sections seemed to be trying to do something else in there as well. "But his sight may never return after damage like this, despite boosted regeneration factor. And complications are always possible. We will need to bandage his face, find the sterile gauze pads and place them over the eyes when I am finished here."

Ryan nodded vigorously, and once this all was done, he rushed to go and get the said supplies from a small table nearby, setting them down beside Brian.

Lyra sat back down on the couch and fiddled with the toy. She yawned and curled up. With all the action today, she was beginning to feel a bit sleepy.

Benjamin helped carry Ryan through the hallway, finding the red luminescence disconcerting and a little bit irritating to his eyes, but pulled against it.
He felt his leg go limp a bit, leaving a blood splatter down the hallway that wouldn't even compare in both pain and intensity to what Brian must of been feeling like.
He helped strap the man down and helped clean the man's face and wounds, using a nearby rag he soaked gently in water before he began to clear most of the blood from his cheeks away before the machine took over.
Gently lifting his leg as not to aggravate the wound, he placed it on top of the counter and allowed himself to rest as he let the machines do their work on his wounded leg.
Then the story of Pink rose up, or well... Lucy, apparently. Lucy Grace. He had a name for the girl with no hair and disheveled bandages, buried in a lid covered hole out in the desert somewhere.
"Did... did she have a family?" He asked. "Are they still alive? Did they drop her off?"

"Miss Grace is survived by her sister. She also was living with a small enclave commune, and I believe they consider themselves all family. Notifications, and condolences, of these next of kin will be made as soon as possible." Oz explained, sounding even sadder than his robot had. The voice being mostly the same. "And if you wish, you may return to the others. There is a shower near the recreational room, and I suggest you utilize it. In fact, all three of you were exposed to the contagions of the walking corpse. While I have faith in your inoculations, basic sanitary measures should still be observed."
Oz continued to instruct Ryan on tending to Brian, though in the end there didn't seem much Ryan could do, and Oz eventually sent him back to the recreational room as well, telling him to inform the others that they would be called up to the command room shortly. A debriefing was in order.
In addition to a briefing on the threats looming, in the case of more shuffling burn victims literally, on the horizon.

Benjamin nodded, his leg feeling all the more better and far less agonizing as he placed it on the ground and pulled it off the counter, apply light pressure to test his foundations in sure footing. All was well.
He sighed, and looked at Ryan for a moment before he spied on White. He felt so sorry for the boy, as he had pretty much saved their lives in his endeavors in fighting that monster.
He limped off down the way he came to go join the recreational area, looking depressed and tired. He looked at the others, his fingers idly tracing over one of the orbs before he resigned to using the shower facilities.
A quick and thorough wash pulled away all the crime and blood that had built up in their time. Scabs pulled away, and blood pooled in the shower giving it a red tint. Ultimately, he was clean though.
He put on his blue uniform, and left with the others, a towel scrubbing his bald scalp clean. He had never had long hair, but he missed what he did have. But at least he could experiment with the different lengths of hair he would have in their growth back to their original shape.

Ryan followed Ben down the hallway, sagging just as low as they went to the showers and back out. Due to transforming, his scabs had been destroyed- still, he took very little chance with the pain, and, once changed, trudged back into the rec room with the others.
He took a seat next to Lyra, pulling his feet up under him, and was silent for a few moments.
"He's alive," he muttered finally. "Bri-... White, I mean. He'll... he'll be okay. I think, at least..."
He'd let Ben talk about their pink team member.

"There's showers back there," Benjamin said, half hanging off the couch, his legs spread wide and leaning his elbows on his knees, head in his hands. "He's... going to be alright. The... machines were smart and intellectual, they can handle it."
He pinched the ridge of his nose, and looked about ready to tear up and start bawling.
"The girls name was Lucy Grace." Benjamin started, "The girl in Pink. She was eighteen... she had a family. I... I think It's only fair that one day we... we hand her corpse back to her family."

Lyra had dozed off, and she awoke as she felt Ryan's weight be added to th couch, "Hey is everything okay?" she asked.
She listened to both of the boys, "I'm glad White is okay... And I'm glad we know Lucy's name.... Lucy Grace... That's real pretty. Better than Rose, by far. And... Eighteen? She looked as old as I was,"
She sat up, "I wonder... If any of us will ever be eighteen..."

"Lucy... huh..." Austin asked, still focusing on the aquarium like a video gamer. He'd picked the lobster-like creature. Infact, it was more of a lobster than the orca with what looked like bear legs it unfolded from it's sleek torpedo body when it came near a surface it could stand, or climb, on. "So, we're going to have to dig her up again? Kinda... morbid." He twitched his little finger just a millimeter away from the sphere, the plasma tail flicking out to try to touch his conductive fingertip. As a result, his lobster toy flicked it's tail creating a little swirling cloud as it jumped up. A twitch with other hand had the lobster try to grab at the top of a rock shelf in the aquarium.
"Aw..." Austin said as the little robot fell back down. He had moved his fingers too slowly to make it scramble up the surface. "You guys need to cheer up. 'Wonder if we'll be eighteen'? Really? Sure we will! The worst is over. We're, like, superheroes now. We're going to save the world." He paused to consider the room. "After a shower." He finally admitted, heading towards the door to the bathroom.
There was a steady 'clunk, clunk, clunk' familiar to them as the footsteps of Tiktok, in the bunk room. He was making up the bed. The blankets and pillows were all a dull grey, but as a touch of personality, in addition to the pillows the beds were also set with small stuffed animals based on the creature the children had chosen in the aquarium.

Ryan drew his knees closer in to his chest.
"You shouldn't say that," he said bitterly, with a smile to match the tone. "It's scary to think about it, anyway- we shouldn't worry... until then, I guess. When the time comes..."

"Well I'm only barely 13... and five years is a long time. Who knows what we'll be doing." she said, "But yeah... I'll try not to think about it..." She watched Austin leave, "A shower sounds good to me too... I got really dusty and gross when I fell down that hill..."
It was probably the shortest shower Lyra had ever taken. She was used to having to wrestle with her scalp to get her unruly blonde curls clean, but with her shorn hair it took no time at all. Also she wanted to get out as fast as she could, because the water burned her skin, and made scabs reopen. She felt extremely squeamish watching blood go down the drain.
You're such a baby, Lyra she thought, If that freaks you out, what are you gonna do when you start having your period...
Would that even happen? She remembered Oz saying there reproduction would be messed up. She was now curious, but she was a bit afraid to ask him. Men got squemish about that sort of thing.
She got out of the shower and dressed herself in her yellow uniform. She was so happy to have nice clean clothes. She made her way to the bedroom, where she saw Tik-Tok busy at work.
"Hi!" she said. She noticed the bed with the stuffed narwhal, "Aww... is this mine?" She laid down on the bed and cuddled the narwhal

Benjamin placed a gentle, albeit scarred, hand on Lyra's shoulder, squeezing gently and giving the girl a gentle smile that looked all too forced to be natural for Benjamin.
"Of course," He began, his voice barely above a whisper, his throat partially cracking a bit. "We just... have to stick together. We saw what those things could do... they rely on taking us one-on-one."
"If not for Ryan and White," He started, and traced his finger gently over some of the scars on his leg. "Well, I would be an amputee... and White would be dead."
He held his head in his hands gently, sighing.
"Well... good night, guys." Benjamin said, smiling at the others before he plopped off to his bed. "Wake me if White gets up."
He traced his finger over an orb gently, watching his pet Squirtle jump up to his command. It plodded against the ground, before it launched a jet of water from itself, pushing it up onto an rock. He smiled and giggled a bit, and walked off.
He traced a finger over the intelligent Tik-Tok's back, around a dent. He bent over to look into the intelligent robot's eyes.
"Thank you."

As the boys of red and blue returned from the showers and infirmary, Zeph's focus on her Orca toy was broken as the two shared the details on White and Pink. Or, Brian and Lucy, as it turned out. Lyra expressed her concern when it turned out Lucy had been 18, only for Austin to calm her down.
"Try not to worry about five years from now," she said before the girl left for her shower. "Just try and focus on today. Tomorrow if you have to. Also, dibs on the next shower after Lyra."
It didn't really matter much at this point, since Z was only person besides Lyra who didn't get a shower yet. When she finally did get one, it was such a relief. Zephyrine had gone extended periods without bathing before, but washing off the accumulated blood, salt, sweat, dead skin and just general GUNK from the surgery and the flats felt so amazing. Even if it did hurt a bit. She figured that the pain was at least a sign that dead stuff was coming off, and her new skin could finally come out.
As she came out from the shower and dried off, Zephyrine grabbed the black uniform set from near the shower. It felt good to actually have CLOTHES again... even if she did wish she had her jacket back. The girl in black returned to the main part of the rec room and sat down on the couch with a *thump!*
...It was pretty comfy.

Ryan hadn't moved when Z came back in... though that didn't exactly mean much. He'd simply rested his head against the back of the couch, legs drawn tight, and fallen asleep. It was unsure if he had known about them each having a bed, or if he had just been too tired to go, or what.
Really though, his mind, even in sleep, was a bit too plagued by the thoughts of Lucy and Brian both. As he drifted off he thought of what her family must feel, who they'd be, what they'd look like when they go to tell them, filling him with a low, heavy sense of dread; and now, in his sleep, the thoughts of Brian being killed by the zombie, or dying on the operating table due to machines malfunctioning or his own stupid error left him twitching and in a hopeless, subconscious despair.
As Z landed on the couch next to him, he was jarred back awake. He let a soft whine escape his throat as he rubbed his eyes and looked around before his gaze fell on her.
"So I..." His voice faded out as he thought. "...What was your life like, Z?"

Ryan, Red, had been woken by Z's flopping onto the couch. She felt a little bad for that, but at least he could actually get in a bed if he wanted. And she'd have someone to talk to.
"Oh, sorry," she said, first of all. "And now that I can actually talk, my name isn't Z. It was all I could get out at the moment. It's Zephyrine. Or Zeph. Or, y'know, Z will still work. Take your pick. As for my life? Eh, Rough. I guess. Lived on the streets, wandered around a lot, got shoved in an orphanage. Now I'm here. You?"
Everyone's pasts didn't really matter to Zeph. They were in new lives now, and it was the future that really mattered. But she reckoned asking Ryan about his path would be the best thing to do.

Lyra wrapped the blanket around her and continued cuddling her yellow narwhal. It reminded her so much of the stuffed animals she had when she was younger... well except for the horn poking into her cheek. As Ben walked in she probably looked reminiscent of a child tucked in with her teddy bear.
She looked up as she heard Ben thank Tik Tok. She hadn't noticed him when she walked in, "Yeah, thank you." she said, "I'm... I'm sorry we broke you out there. " she added sheepishly.

The 'uniforms' were loose, allowing them to summon their under sheath without damaging the outfit. They were also easily removable, while providing a unity of theme, easy identification with their colors, and covering all society concepts of modesty. It was hard to tell if they were warm or not, as the rec room, bunk room, and bath rooms were all pleasantly warm, and the augmented bodies didn't really register discomfort at different temperatures anymore. What they lacked was fashion or style, looking like nothing but frumpy flight suits.
"Yes." Tiktok replied. "The great and powerful believed that you would be able to take comfort with these small shaped pillows. They are personalized to the choices you made in controlling the miniature remote drones in the aquarium. Sleep well." The robot touched his hat with his one good arm and turned to march out, gazing at Benjamin. His jewel like eye, the one working one at least, blinked. "No thanks necessary. I am only doing the job I am programmed to do. Do either of you need anything further?"
Austin was still trying to work with his lobster, glaring at the little be-cannoned turtle that had already made the jump, thruster assisted. Behind him Ryan and Zeph were talking on the couch, so they were probably disturbed by his bark of triumph at managing not just climbing up on the one rock, but sending his little lobster-bot jumping across several.
"Did you guys see that?" Austin asked as Tiktok walked into the rec room. "Oh, hey... uh... brass guy..." Tiktok looked at him and bowed slightly. "It's good to see you made it inside. I thought you were locked out."
"The battle eventually ended and I was able to return for cleaning and repairs." Tiktok said. He didn't look repaired, if anything he seemed to have more scratches than before... but he did look cleaner. "You have nothing to worry about from that cyberneticly animated corpse any longer."
"Wow. That's cool. I guess we can't always count on your to fight our battles for us though."
"No, my combat ability is limited, and my travel ability even more so. I am simply programmed to lend what support I can around the great and powerful's command center. Do you need anything further?"
"Oh... ah... nope." Austin said. "I was just going to try out the gym thingy there and then maybe hit the showers before bed. It's been a long night."
"If you need anything, the intercom is available." Tiktok pointed out. "I will be completing my self repairs. Sleep well children." With that the lower body started to walk off, and the upper body rotated to once more look where it was going.
Austin looked over at Ryan and Zeph. "This is so awesome. We have a robot butler. A combat butler at that!" He said, sitting down on the all in one gym and gently taking the bar and flexing it. "Huh... this isn't so bad. I was half afraid I'd crush it or something." The weight gave him suitable resistance, but wasn't too heavy he couldn't lift it. He didn't realize, or really care, what kind of weight he was lifting.
Austin continued to pull on the metal bar, left arm, right arm, left arm, right arm, until he heard a gurgling in his belly. "Oh... it's been almost all day and I haven't eaten anything but a few of those cookies..." He said, possibly to himself, though it wasn't like he didn't have an audience. "I'm going to see what's in the kitchen area."

Benjamin allowed his hand to gently slide across the intelligent robot's frame as he peddled away to converse with Austin at the large, over-sized tank that stood the centerpiece of the whole room.
He looked at Lyra, adjusting his own jumpsuit slightly as he played with the zipper a bit before he sat down on his bed across from hers, rubbing the soles of his feet gently and smiling at the girl.
"How are you doing?" He asked, eyeing her narwhal for a moment before he looked at the object laying, cuddled up to the pillow. He placed his hand over it, and cupped it gently and turned it to face him.
It was the little machine he had touched before, the one he had caused to jump onto the rock. He ran his thumbs over it gently. He felt a little too old for such things, having never had one before in his life, but felt that it would make him feel better. He hid it from view by secreting it under his blankets, but let its little head pop out from underneat.h

Ryan looked to Austin, giving a small sheepish smile before Zephyrine asked him what his life was like. He blushed deeply- they were so different! Here was a girl who had lived her lief on the streets, fighting for all she had, brave and strong and...
"I'm an orphan too," he finally said, letting his feet down to kick them softly and stare down at his knees as he spoke. "My grandmother Florence took me in... basically at birth. They died from the plague, I guess, from what she said- like, they were both sick when my mom was pregnant, and Grandmother Florence took me immediately when I was born- they wouldn't even let them hold me." He was quiet for a moment. "Not that I have room to complain, really, I don't- I have a better life than... anyone, I guess. Grandmother Florence is apparently old money." He paused once more there, giving a listless sigh. "I'm sorry..."

"I'm fine," Lyra said to Ben. She gave a large yawn, "Well at least as fine as I can be after all that happened today. Poor Brian and Lucy... I'm glad I know their names now."
She shifted in her bed and faced him, "Ben... if you don't mind me asking, why did your family put you through this? You're not weak and useless like I am."

Benjamin nodded, not making eye contact with the girl as he picked at his fingers lightly, remembering what had happened to Brian in their effort to save him and Ryan. And Lucy...
He looked up at her with a gentle smile and half-lidded eyes. "It has been a long day, hasn't it?"
"You're not useless," He corrected. He sat back in his bed, situating himself under the blankets, but rolling on his side to look up at Lyra. "And just because you cried doesn't make you weak. It means you have a gentle heart."
"I-..." He said, not quite sure how to tell her. "I-... am a disgrace, to my father. The rest of my family is dead. He never really loved me from the beginning. The amount of times he'd teach me a survival lesson, only to leave me out in the wilderness by myself to learn it."
"I reckon you should go to sleep now," Benjamin suggested, smiling. He closed his eyes. "There's some serious shit up ahead."

"The longest I've ever had..." Lyra agreed,
"I just stood there and watched when Brian... when he... when that happened." she argued, "I'm just.. I'm just used to the things my father would tell me. He never loved me from the beginning either, I think from the moment he found out I was a girl. He... he really didn't want a daughter. He had a son who died from the plague, and he was perfect and wonderful and the best son ever. And then there's me... Its weird to think we have that in common..."

Zephyrine also noticed the simultaneous similarities and differences between the two.
"I never met my parents either. I think they're dead, too," she said, surprisingly casually. "I don't know. But dead makes the most sense. "
She would've said that she preferred to think that they had died instead of abandoning her, but she wasn't telling Ryan that. Speaking of Ryan, he seemed pretty embarrassed by what he had said.
"Don't be sorry," Zeph said. "Y'know, a wise man...a priest, I think, once told me that 'The circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.' I'm inclined to agree with him. "

"You were in shock," Benjamin countered, propping himself up on one elbow to look at the girl. "It just happens, I mean... you're young. I've just spent my whole life doing things where that happens."
"Like, I'd get attacked by something and I'd have to react." Benjamin continued. "You'll get use to it. You can't keep doubting yourself, you're a valued member of this team."
He held his hand out across the distance of the bunk, smiling at the girl. He sighed a bit, looking at her and gradually drifting off to sleep.
"Hey, It's alright." Benjamin started, eyes half-lidded. "In here, with us, he doesn't matter. You're with us now."

" I... I never really lived the way the rest of you guys have," Lyra realized, " I spent the majority of my life holing up in my room, reading my books and trying my best to stay out of Dad's way. I mean, I learned a lot from my books but.. No book could prepare me for this. At least your father kind of prepared you for this in some way. Mine just... Threw me in here..."
She shrugged, " You're right, I guess... I have more important things to worry about then him..."

"He didn't prepare me for this." Benjamin mused, sighing. He curled his hand into an elbow, and leaned onto it. "He always just saw me as kind of a disgrace."
"Just... remember," Benjamin said. "Right now, with your abilities, you can march back home and show him what you truly are. You're not a disgrace, Lyra. In-fact, you're far from it."
