A thread to talk about the movie that's on the works, so far this is what I know:
It's announced that Dakpta Johnson (daughter of Melanie Griffith) is Anastasia Steele and Charlie Hunnam is Christian Grey.
There's a backlash against the chosen actors and a petition goes up to get Matt Boomer and Alexis Bledel for the lead roles: From Pop2it
Matt responds that he's "Touched". No word from Alexis.
And there's another petition that wants Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds in the lead roles. [<-Clicky]
And as of now, Charlie has left the building, he's left the movie. No word on who might replace him yet.

And people still give it hope that this movie is gonna make it.
one word: Nope.

To be honest, I think that this movie is gonna flop regardless. I haven't seen any trailer for the movie whatsoever and so far, nobody wants any part of it. Nobody wants anything to do with this movie.
Fans can keep hoping all they want but I honestly think that 50 Shades fad is somewhat dying down.

Considering the nature of the story, I have to wonder what theater would ever feature it if a movie was ever actually an accurate representation. While some theaters have no shortage of nudity or sexual activity, they're not straight-up porn like a true adaptation of 50 Shades would be.

^ Speaking of porn, I heard that there was an actual porn adaptation of the books featuring porn stars but E.L. James demanded that they take it down.
I don't know how BDSM could translate well to the big screen. O.o

That is not to say theaters WON'T show NC-17 flicks.
I think a year ago, the theaters presented "Shame", a British drama about sexual addiction. The movie recieved a box office of over $17 million while its budget was somewhere between $4 - 6 million (in short, this was a successful movie). It also was critically praised and even well favored at Film Festivals.
So it is NOT to say that the NC-17 rating is always the mark of death.
However, that movie was talking about addiction, and I'm guessing had some very good writing. 50 Shades, however, was previously a Twilight fan fiction.

I don't know how BDSM could translate well to the big screen. O.o To be entirely accurate though, 50 Shades isn't BDSM. "BDSM" in the books seems to be code word for "rape". All the sex scenes except one or two are actually pretty vanilla except for the fact that it's rape. My respect for Emma Watson just shot right up. You bash that shitty series like it deserves! I'm actually curious how they're going to do this. The book is mostly just Hellspawn threatening to beat Anabella and raping and actually beating Anabella.

Ladies and gents, we have a... an actor for Christian's character! Jaime Dornan (Did you actually think I'd think that's a winner and I mean the character Jaime's playing btw). And he's "Beyond anything else, I was really f------ excited".
And according to Entertainment Weekly (November 22 2013)'s article, the franchise will be rated R (don't know if the rating will hold or change) and then there's this quote from Donna Langley (Universal's chairman):
And its released has been pushed from summer of next year to Valentine's Day weekend of 2015.

First off, this is rated R movie. That means they'll still have to cut down on a lot of the sexy tiems, leaving angry fans.
Second, pushing a movie to arguable 7 - 9 months back smells of disaster.
Third, considering the troubling casting choices, that also means this film is gonna suffer.
In short, I expect this movie to BLOW . . . and I don't mean in a sexy way either.

Oh I know, I raised the eyebrow when I saw the tentative rating, I guess it could be possible, but let's face it, people read that book for the sex.
The push back was due Charlie leaving and the whole shebang of finding an actor, apparently, the filming started yesterday, I think. EL James tweeted a picture of the first day of filming. And also, apparently, people on the UK are starting to return the books so...

Why on earth would she want the role at all, let alone that much?

Why on earth would she want the role at all, let alone that much? ^It feels oddly fitting, considering that one of the characters that book is based stalked the other. And that the character hers is based basically clinged on for dear life.
Also, I think the people involved expect something akin the Twilight movies, recognition, fame and money. Because let's face it, it's not like it's Oscar bait.

I've heard pretty much next to nothing about this movie (aside from the odd articles that say they've finally cast the male lead). I didn't even think it was still even being made.

Yep, still being made. I've seen a couple of pictures of outdoor set scenes in some of the sites I go. But not much.
Oh and this happened: Oprah wants 50 Shades to be :

I'm of the opinion that the damn thing shouldn't even be made, nevermind whose playing the characters.

Saw this on 50ShadesofWhy 50shadesofwhy.tumblr.com/post/81500827178/making-50-shades-into-a-movie1) ELJ has maintained complete creative control of the project. 2) The screenwriter wasn’t even finished with the script when they started filming. 3) The director is not particularly experienced. 4) There’s no story. 5) The moment has passed. If all these are true, we'll know we'll see 50Shades flop at the BoxOffice 2015

By any logic, the books should have flopped too, as most self published shitty fanfics based on shitty series do.
So 1) having EL James work her magic and give the fans a 1:1 adaptation is probably the smartest thing they could do. The books didn't get where they are now by skillfull crafting and quality and depth. Nobody in the world can salvage 50 shades of grey and make it good without changing everything. If anyone can recreate it, it's EL James, and she'll be just as clueless about moviemaking as she was about writing.
2) and 3) again, having Peter Jackson turn it into a clean polished movie wouldn't have covered its crap stench. No actor in the world could make an oscar-worthy performance out of a single scene from it. It's much closer to the "so bad it's good" end of the spectrum, so just have it fail in epic proportions. Give it to people who would ruin GOOD scripts. I heard about this series because A) Twilight and B) people reading from the books in funny voices. If it's really easy to parody, youtube will do all your advertisement for you. Our money is as good as anyone's.
4) If someone can turn a book series without story into a bestseller, they can do that with a movie. All it had going for it was inaccurate lame BDSM that's basically rape. Any average erotic novel in history kicks 50 shades ass, yet probably none of them ever sold that well. No problem here.
5) This may hopefully break the monster's neck, because it had some lucky timing with Twilight and it was nothing but a fad.

2-4) *Gasp* You don't say, I would imagine that a book of such depth would have a good story to turn into a script! I am shocked! Shocked I say! 5) I read somewhere that women in the UK were starting to return the books already.

My mother hasn't. Her words: "I want you to inherit them! I know you and dean are into this sort of thing..." Yes, it's always been my fantasy to have my loving boyfriend rape me.

A 'friend' who adores 50 shades of grey just unfriended me on facebook, so now I've put an anti-50 pic on my profile because I've been dying to do that for months but am too nice to want to upset her. (She read all three books. And enjoyed them. I've no idea how!!)

^I honestly can think a way, parody. I posted a video on the book thread (the last pages)that I recommend you to look. But, don't eat or drink while you watch. I don't make myself responsible if you choke.
My mother hasn't. Her words: "I want you to inherit them! I know you and dean are into this sort of thing..." Yes, it's always been my fantasy to have my loving boyfriend rape me. I am judging your mother.
