When the tribes came south, some called it The Great Slaughtering, The Godcalling, The Coming of the Storm. There were many great wariors, but none so powerful as the Warlord Asavar Kul. His armies destroyed all foes they met and ravaged the lands of the south But Kul fell at the walls of a city called Kislev, and his allies were scattered. It seemed as if the men of the south had triumphed against the gods of the north, though few believed that a man such as Asavar Kul could be truly killed. Amongst the scattered survivors of Kul's followers, one was to rise to prominence and take up the banner of conquest, once held by his master. One to aspire to greatness, to seek the favour of the gods, to harbour dreams of immortality. One to set aflame the lands of the weakling Empire. The tale of northern legends and southern nightmares begins

The longboat swayed against the waves as it was pulled the last of the way up onto the shore. The 'sand' here was smooth worn stones about the size of your toe, and hardly befitting the name 'sand' in the first place. The water was cold, and the sky was grey, the kind that signaled a storm at sea.
The men were happy to make port, such as it was, and Jarl jumped out of the ship, lending his not inconsiderable strength to pulling their vessel out of the reach of the tides.
"We will make camp there, at the edge of the beach, where the rocks will shelter us from the winds. Bring wood from the forest there. Hunters too, we could use with fresh meat in our stores. You, take a group and hunt for a spring. A skin of water is no replacement for a horn of mead, but I'll take anything to wash the salt from my lips." Jarl declared even before he had finished securing the boat.
They were but one longboat of many that had set out, and now it seemed that they were all too few. They would find no friendly faces in this place... but glory and plunder might still be gained before they returned home. Already the tales echoed in Jarl's head, the ones he would sing of in their hall when they returned. He just needed something suitably epic to end the song... or to begin a new one.

As the sun set, everyone gathered near the fire of the small camp. Suddenly(because I suck at introducing characters THAT much)the flames bursted upwards and a croaking voice as if coming from the fires said(And yes my writing skill is THAT bad): "Heed my words brave warrior of the gods, for I am their herald. They have cast their gaze upon you - and you are to be tested. Know this Jarl of the Norse, you have deeds to perform and great glory to win."
So let's see if Jarl will believe a talking multicolored fire.....

"This I have known since my mothers womb!" Jarl boasted, standing by the fire and trying to bring a laugh from those around him. Possibly as a means dealing with the fear, though unlikely. More probably he was taunting whatever was giving voice to the rainbow hued flames. "Tell me, what deeds to I have to perform? Show yourself to us."

"I will be revealed when the time comes! The gods chosen Asavar Kul has fallen, another can take his place and stand as their highest champion! One to slay all foes they meet, with an army great enough to conquer nations! One to inherit the mantle that Kul once wore!" *cough* *cough*

Jarl let the multicolored fire finish it's coughing fit as he glanced around at his men with a 'good joke, eh?' expression.
"Hear that? You're an army great enough to conquer nations!" He modulated his tone and body language, bringing a cheer at the declaration, even if it was somewhat half hearted. "Well who's to refuse that sort of encouragement? We march in the morning! To victory, glory, and conquest!"
Of course, this changed none of his, or his wiser advisors, plans. Scout the area, which could result in a few days exploration inland, raid any useful targets which could result in even more time spent, wait for clear sailing which the previous two activities would spend the time on, then return home with something to show for their efforts and not inconsiderable losses from supporting Asavar Kul's war. Better to return home with some wealth than simply as one of the warlords 'scattered allies' that never even saw part in the major battles.

"That is the test foolish mortal! Conquer and despoil for the glory of the gods, and the ultimate reward can be yours. Your kinsmen and allies are all around you, the weak men of the south captured many after Kul was lost. But they still live and can fight once again. Seek them out and you will forge an army. Follow the setting sun, there you shal prove your worth!" the voice from the fires seemed somewhat irritated.

Jarl postured before the flames, or rather before his men. "I'll take any test you can offer, if you think you can offer it to my face."
He glanced at his men. "West? West is as good a direction to explore as any other. I'll lead the journey west, you," He gestured to one of his other commanders, "Lead east, and you south. We'll see who finds something, and if this flame is naught but heated words."
((Yeah... it would really REALLY help if there was somebody besides the two of us posting.))

((Yeah, sorry about that. Kinda' distracted by the other RPs and really... not sure what to do. So just throwing my guy in.))
Emerging from the crowd, the hulking frame of Svanir Lothbrok lumbered towards the central flames, past the eccentric display of the charismatic Jarl. He removed his helmet, exposing his scarred face and holding it in one hand in the crook of his elbow.
"How do we know that you speak of laurels to be earned in glorious combat?" He inquired, his voice deep and booming. He turned to look at the others. "We may serve, but the Gods do not treat us as equals. How are we to be sure this isn't some sick ploy for game?"
"It would not be the first time they have spun a web of lies to muse their immortal souls." He continued, turning from the ground back to the flames. "Nor the last."
"This... this is magic." He concluded. "The tools of the witch - the coward - and they're machinations will lead us astray from the truth path of devotion, the true path of ascension."

"Do not question a herald of the gods! Heed these words Jarl, you have mighty deeds to perform, and great glory to win." After these words the fire dissapeared, as if it was extinguished.
(Though I was absolutely serious - this is in fact the most active RP I made here so far. And I do feel proud of progressing) (P.S Now I question again - do you believe a voice coming from a color-shifting fire that said it was sent by the gods to give you a task, keep in mind that this is a genuine medieval setting and people are atleast mildly supersticious)

"Ah, then Svanir, perhaps you should lead the expedition east? Away from the path this voice has suggested, away from the machinations that would lead us astray!" Jarl gave him a slap on the shoulder. "And you'll save us from such witches if we find any tomorrow, aye? Take any of those who feel the same! We'll need them or not as the gods decree." He glanced at the fire. "I see the flames have died down. Another fire is to be built. Somewhere else. This firepit shall not be used for flame nor cooking any more. Not after such a display. Bury it."
In Jarl's mind this was clearly a trick. The gods do not cough. Oh, the light show was impressive, and he was sure many of his men would believe it was the voice of the gods, but just exactly what it was... Svanir could easily be right. A witches ploy, or something equally powerful. A wizard bent on setting a trap. Best not to abuse such powerful individuals of their humor any more than the warriors he fought beside. If it were a trap, he would face it and battle the wizard face to face rather than flee from some light show and distant coughing voice.
Besides, they really had nothing better to do. They were separated from the main force, and he didn't know which way would be best. Scouting both east and west and south were his intents on landing, so humoring both the men and whatever caused such sorcerous displays of power was for the best to him.

I'm not sure it's my place to say, but I think it very well might be. We didn't really have a large enough group participating to keep it all that active if one or two people aren't posting regularly.
