I never understood how his supposed compassion lined up with damning other people to the vampire life, especially after Edward, the first one, obviously hated it so much. You'd think he'd learn his lesson.

You'd think he'd learn his lesson. The way I see it, he's being "compassionate" because he's saving them from the agony of living as a boring human being. Meyer has constantly stated that she views humans as boring creatures and it honestly wouldn't surprise me if she thinks that Carlisle turning people against their will is in their best interests. In a way, she probably wishes that some pseudo-kind vampire would swoop into her life and do the same for her. All that said however, anyone with any shred of common sense would see that there is nothing compassionate about what he did.

Meyer believes it was alright for Edward to take the engine out of Bella's car because he was trying to protect her. Meyer seems to think so long as it's for their best interest, you can do anything against a person's will.

Cause, you know, babiez are just that important. I'm pro-life and even I thought that was batshit insane.

And in the hopes that Edward would have a match. Yeah nice going, Dr. "Nice Guy".

Surely, they could've arranged a date between Edward and a girl who was already a vampire? What, were they all just not hot enough?!

^Obviously not. Seriously, the poor girl suffers the rape, gets turned into a vampire unwillingly and Edward is a jackass to her from day one. Carlisle not only lacks compassion, he lacks common sense.

But she's pretty! Therefore she deserves immortality.
Seriously, does anyone remember any mention of meyerpires turned after the age of thirty? I'm just going to assume venom cures age as well.

I remember reading a fanfic where after Rose votes Bella not be a vampire, Jasper chews her out saying how they're all happy as vampires, and says "Whereas you-" he's clearly about to call her a spiteful bitch, but Rose cuts him off after those two words saying "I would have rather died on the streets of Rochestor." Which is true. Honestly Carlisle, if you see a girl dying, and she begs you to let her die, sometimes you should just let them.

Maybe he is building up his own House so one day he can overtake the entire vampire world for himself?

I never really paid attention to Carlisle, but I did have a bit of a soft spot for Rosalie. What the Cullens do to her is cruel and unusual. Why Meyer? Because she's blond and pretty, she must be a bitch! So she doesn't instantly kiss Bella's ass? Bitch! And she only loves Bella after she gets a baby, showing that Meyer truly believes a woman's role is to be a babymaker.
I don't spite Rosalie for wanting to live a normal life. All she wanted was to get married and have kids and live a normal life. Fine. But Carlisle turns her into a vampire so Edward could have a mate he doesn't even like. And she can be tormented for eternity and treated like a bitch. And Meyer makes it seem like the only cure for her misery was to give her a baby to take care of.

Meyer seems to hate blondes. I must say, as a blonde myself, I'm offended.

Ah, Carlisle Cullen.
There are a million things I could say right now, but right now, I'm just going to stick with one.
So Carlisle doesn't give a shit if someone dies or not. He just picks and chooses humans on the brink of death and sees what he can do with them. He only dechristianized Rosalie for the sole purpose of being Edward's lover.
Still, the best is yet to come. And honestly, it's hard to feel sorry for Rosalie since she brought all of her problems upon herself.
And anyway, I would rather die a mortal than be changed into an immortal vampire, and for that reason, I could go back to reality.
Karma and e-cookies if you get the quote.

Pfft guys, you just don't understand. Watching the people you love die, being unable to change, and your mental health fading as you get weighed down with memories, who wouldn't want that? And anyway, I would rather die a mortal than be changed into an immortal vampire, and for that reason, I could go back to reality. Karma and e-cookies if you get the quote. I know it defeats the purpose of "cookies if you get the quote", but was it to Doctor Who? The feeling of not knowing if I knew was bothering me.

limelightqueen: Now that you mention it, I think the oldest one is Esme with 25-26?
@kleptomaniac: I also felt bad for Rosalie. I remember during the voting to turn Bella when she says: "I wish someone had voted NO for me" or something like that. Pretty telling, isn't it?
blenderbender: I'm not even a blonde and it offends me how Smeyer played those horrible stereotypes.

^ I saw the movie with my Twilight loving best friend. We mocked it mercilessly. Rosalie said "Sorry but, if I had the chance, I'd want somebody to vote no for me. So, sorry, but no." at least, that's what she said in the movie. I'm not sure what she said in the book.

Meyer hates blondes because it's easy. It's a classic cliche: the pretty blonde girl is a bitch who hates the brunette heroine because she can. And Smeyer has never met a cliche that she won't rape and then turn into a sparkley vampire so it can live a miserable half-existence for the rest of eternity.

^Clichés are easy, there are so many jokes about dumb blondes, smart brunettes and stuff like that. So I guess it was easier for Smeyer to use these clichés instead of working out real characters.

Apparently, Smeyers was trying to make Carlisle a compassionate doctor type when she wrote this:
Um...que?
Are there really that many diseases that are distinguishable by their smell? That doesn't make any sense.
Plus, as other posters have brought up, he would have enriched many more lives if he had FREAKING DONATED SOME OF HIS MONEY, RATHER THAN BUYING HIS OWN FREAKING ISLAND.

Well it's not only his smell that has been enhanced, he sees clearer and might pick up on things that other doctors would have missed
also his reaction time would be a lot faster and I imagine that he wouldn't really be phased out by what's happening (if you catch my drift)
And I guess if his power is compassion, maybe he would be able to empathise with the patients better and take more time to see them (since he doesn't sleep)
but y'know.
EDIT: Also, I wonder what kind of rules there are to buying your own island, surely people would wonder how he earned that amount of money as a doctor.
My guess is most he has to go through possibly the same procedures as if he were expanding land . . . but then again the island is supposedly in a country outside the US so yeah, it does seem a bit complicated

If we sit here counting complications in Meyer's writing, we'll never sleep again.
@ Purple Rose- It gets annoying that all "bitchy" characters are blonde. Lauren, Rosalie, Tanya. Leah isn't blonde, but since she's Native, that may be the closest thing to a correct biological thing Meyer has ever written. It gets very annoying when 75% of the bitchy characters are blonde like you.

blenderbender: I understand, I would be seriously pissed too if I were blonde. I'm sick of stereotypes, really sick of them, I can't blame you for being angry. And now that we mention this, didn't she based these characters as women she knew in college?
