Yeah, I liked Mockingjay too. I enjoyed the books with the Games, because I liked the suspense and they were fast-paced, but I liked Mockingjay for its own reasons. The fact that it showed a realistic side of war, that people died and changed and suffered PTSD, and I really liked the ending. (I loved the line where, when she chose Peeta, she acknowledged that she didn't need a man who gave her fire, but one who gave her peace and safety. Too often in YA the MC chooses the "bad boy." I like that here it was the person who could give her emotional support that she chose.) The final hunger games still rubs me slightly the wrong way, but I can see the justification for it. I like that too. Coin obviously had her own extremist agenda, and the leader who took over after her (Payton? I can't remember the spelling now) was a much better choice. Had Coin ended up in power, chances are it just would have ended up as Capitol 2.0.

^My thoughts exactly. And I think it was Paylor, though that could be wrong. I have to admit, though, I think the arenas were my favorite part.

^That's what I thought, too. And honestly, after re-reading the whole series, I actually really liked Mockingjay. I like how different Katniss was from the beginning of the series, and how it makes sense with what's happened to her. I also like that Katniss shoots Coin, not Snow. How it shows that extremists on one side of a war are no better than extremists on the other. Especially in light of, say, what's going on in Egypt right now-they got rid of their dictator, but the military rule still sucks. Which is what would have happened under Coin. And I think that the "final Hunger Games with the children of the officials" thing was also supposed to show that. Like, even people like Katniss, who are heroes, will still go along with horrible things for the sake of revenge. Because that's human nature. Frankly, I loved Katniss. For the reasons everyone else has said. I admit I was Team Gale at first-I actually really hated Peeta for a while-but eventually I stopped being so. Which is another reason I liked the books, actually.
=) Yay! You agree too! -high five!- ^_^ I loved Katniss as well and Mockingjay, while not my favorite, I didn't hate it either.
Also, Hunger Games so far has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I know it just came out early in some places, but that's pretty good so far I think!

Sorry.

Who else watched the movie?
I LOVED IT. It would have been perfect, had I not had some idiot in my theater crack really shitty jokes and ruin the sentimental parts -_-
Rue dying really made my tear up. It's one thing to read about it, but when you see this adorable little girl who really cares about Katniss and how their relationship mirrors Kat's and Prim's...I just wanted to die inside man!

^Agreed. The movie was awesome, and that's coming from me, and I usually HATE movie adaptations of books. My thoughts are all on LJ.

I loved the movie...though I would have loved it more if my head hadn't been hurting...and if my back didn't feel thrown out...and if I had better seating other than being so close everything seemed kind of blurry. x___x
...I need to go see it again.
Rue's death really got to me. I cried.
I love Midnight Premieres. As usual, people were chatting, but when the movie started people were all SHUT UPPPPP. XDDD
I love the clapping, cheering, laughter and tears of Midnight Premieres.

I saw it today. =DD I convinced my mom to see it with me too (she's never read the books but we tend to like the same movies/reading material, so I was sure she'd enjoy it. She did! Now she wants to read the series.) Oh god, Rue's death. ;___; I was whimpering and had tears rolling down my face the whole time. I literally heard everyone in the theatre give this sad gasp/sigh when they show her being stabbed. Through that whole scene I swear nobody moved. I didn't see anyone eating or getting up or anything, other than some people surreptitiously wiping their eyes on their sleeves. Our theatre is super tiny and it was a matinee that we went to, but at the end of it people still clapped. I clapped too. Definitely amazing and worth seeing.

I loved it. I really think they did a great job. And everyone clapped at the end in our theatre, too. All of my friends and I were crying at Rue's death, and her district rebelling. Holy shit, that scene was powerful.

^ I loved that part, and definitely respected the movie for it. I don't really give a damn if it was or wasn't in the books or not. I'm tired of all these purists bashing the movie. They didn't do any plot changing damage, and the tidbits they did change I can live with

Saw it yesterday. It was indeed good, though I missed the first half-hour. Ah, well. My brother's almost certain to want it on Blu-Ray, so I'll watch the beginning then if I can't see it sooner. I agree, the changes out of the first-person format were awesome. Shame we still didn't get to see Thresh vs. Cato, but eh. Whatcha gonna do. They were having trouble getting the violence to work in a PG-13 movie as-is. I'd accidentally spoilered myself on the muttation jump scare, but that one still threw me for a loop. You could see the entire audience literally going "Gah!" at that moment. Perfect. And the ending. With the berries. President Snow, you are one magnificent bastard. Yeah, only change I had a problem with was that we didn't get to hear much of the lullaby song. I was looking forward to that. But again, I can see why they cut it. The movie was long enough as-is. Does anyone know if they have the full version on soundtrack or something?

I agree, the scenes outside the arena were great. I especially enjoyed that Seneca Crane got more fleshed out, and just the stuff with the Gamemakers in general. The changes I didn't really like still didn't take that much away from the film, and I could see why they did it. I also really liked the scene before the Reaping, when Katniss gets home from hunting. I was amazed by how perfectly they conveyed the dynamic in Katniss' family, especially in such a short scene.

I loved the outside-the-arena scenes, too. It was cool to see the Gamemakers, Crane, Snow, and Haymitch, and what they were all doing during the games. And the riot in District 11 was heart-wrenching in the pain and frustration the people were feeling. I thought it was a great addition and helped kind of expand the world beyond the viewpoint of the few main characters.
The only change that bothered me at all was having Katniss get the pin from the Hob rather than from Madge, (because I thought the backstory of Madge's aunt being a tribute was really poignant) but I see why they made that change. At that point in the movie it'd be weird for a random girl to give Katniss a pin without including all the backstory (and that'd take up time and would seem out of place), plus this way the pin could be used as a stronger symbol of Katniss and Prim's relationship, with them both offering it to each other.
I don't understand the people bashing the movie for the changes at all. =/ All the changes have clear logic to them, and the parts they added were awesome. Apparently some people are mad that Rue was black. Uh...WHY is that even a big deal?! >.> Her actress played the part great and really brought her to life, and the book even describes her as dark-skinned. I don't get why people are mad about that, it makes no sense.

THANK YOU! Seriously, the book said she had dark brown skin and eyes, as did Thresh. I wasn't aware that those traits belonged to white people -___-
And yeah, I keep hearing flak about how they missed all these tidbits, and how all the stuff with Snow and Seneca wasn't in the book. If there was any issues, Collins would have spoken up. I mean she did co-write the screenplay.

Ugh, the people that are throwing fits over Rue's color... pardon me, but WHY DOES IT MATTER IF SHE'S BLACK OR NOT. WHY IS THAT AN ISSUE.
god I fucking /hate/ people sometimes.

I can see thinking Cinna was white-ish, because green eyes are most common in northern or central Europe (Thank you Wikipedia), but his description was vague and honestly, it's not too big a deal. Rue and Thresh? Were described with dark brown skin. Again, wouldn't be too big a deal if you thought otherwise except that people are making it one. People who, evidently, can't read.

The awkward moment when a black character is played by a black actress. EVERYTHING IS RUINED FOREVER. (╯°Д°)╯⌒┻━┻ I pictured Cinna as being black all along. I guess because his name sounds like cinnamon and he had dark hair, so my imagination just pictured him with dark skin. But if they'd cast a white actor to play him I wouldn't throw a bitchfit. Imo the most important trait for all these characters is that the actors capture their personalities. Physical description wasn't a big deal in the book, the character's personality was.

In my opinion, unless we have an exact description on the physical appearance... do what you want with 'em. Seriously. If it doesn't say much about their race, make them whatever you damn please as long as it captures the character's personality. I don't care.

I didn't like the casting for Cinna, personally. I had a really clear idea of how he looked, which was pretty much exactly like Adam Lambert. And while Lenny Kravitz was good, I still didn't feel like he was Cinna.
But throwing a fit about Rue being black? Whut? The book explicitly states that she has dark skin. Duh.

^ I guess the people that complained abour Rue being black thought she had a tanned or darkened white complexion when they were reading it, if you catch my drift.

But Rue and Thresh were clearly black. If the "dark skin and brown eyes" didn't give it away, the fact that they are located in the "deep south" of Georgia, picking in fields day in and day out, and are whipped more often than other districts, it's obvious it's playing the slave-esque role. I just don't see how anyone could think "yeah, totally white. COTTON for gods sake!

I read all three books and I enjoyed the first two. I was disappointed with the third book. I thought the ending was rushed and important details were left out, especially in the epilogue. As a romantic at heart, I wish the author would have spent more time with Katniss and who she ended up with.
