I've always considered him a horror writer because the bulk of his work is macabre and dark. Where I live and go to college, students are required to read "The Raven" and three various short stories in our Intro to Creative Writing and Studies in Fiction classes.

Edgar Allan Poe was the original yo. He broke the mold for short stories. And horror writing, I think.
I <3 Annabel Lee. Even though I prolly spelled it wrong.

XD In middle school I had to also read The Pit and the Pendulum and The Tell-Tale Heart. In college, I had to read The Raven, Hop-Frog, A Dream Within A Dream and The Masque of the Red Death. I loved all the short stories and poems I've read from him, so I got a book about his completed works for Christmas from my grandparents.

Aye, Poe was an amazing author and certainly one of the best the horror genre has to offer. I do find his most of his poetry rather overrated, but I've absolutely loved almost every short story of his I've ever read. The man had such a great command over the English language in his prose and was the master of creating both suspense and atmosphere. My favorite underrated Poe stories are "Ligeia" and "The Black Cat", but "The Pit and the Pendulum" will always be up there with my favorite short stories, too.

Admittedly, I've only read The Black Cat, which is one of my favorite short stories, if not my absolute favorite. If that short story is any indication, the man could produce some beautiful prose.

Oh, he definitely could. He's possibly my favorite author ever in terms of prose, actually. If you're interested in reading more Poe focusing particularly on his prose, I'd recommend giving "Ligeia" a read, yo.

'Cask of Amontillado' and 'House of Usher' were always my favorites growing up, and I love so many of his poems, especially "The Conqueror Worm".
I used to have this really nice, actual leather edition of all his stuff but some cunt stole it.

"The Conqueror Worm" is an absolutely boss poem, yes. Probably my second favorite Poe poem behind "The Raven" (yes, it's overquoted as hell and mallgoth fags have latched onto it, but it's still undeniably amazingly written).

Undeniable truth there, yo.
I keep forgetting how much I've actually read from him till someone mentions more. ^^"

William Wilson FTW. One of my favorite short stories from Poe. I also love Masque of the Red Death, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Premature Burial. I love Poe so much I got a lame shirt from Hot Topic cause his face was on it. I don't like it says "Poe Knows Ravens" though, it's got that cheap "Look! We're so cool we know about Edgar Allan Poe! We're sooo goth!" type of vibe , but it's pretty hard pressed to find some decent shirts with his image on it, so whatev.

Hell, his name is pretty much synonymous with the whole "I read Poe I'm so dark and edgy and oh-so intellectual" posturing to the point I'm sometimes a bit ashamed to say he's one of my favorite authors, but hey, at the end of the day the man could fucking write, no matter how many mallgoth pseudo-fans he gained over the years.

I think the problem is that people think he's only about being dark and moody, when he actually had a great sense of humor. Many of his other stories has some sharp wit that flies right over your head. People mention his creepy stories too many times and don't really bring up anything else. It's a shame, being the poster child for annoying mallgoths when he probably would have scoffed at them too.

"The Bells" is one of my three favorite poems of all time, but I have to say: while the third and fourth verses are pretty awesome, the second verse definitely does the most with the sounds of the words to play on your emotions. Just recite it sometime and feel your heart soar. =D

I actually own two collections of all of his works. Those books are my treasures. XD My favorite short stories probably have to be The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Pit and the Pendulum.

I've only read The Tell-Tale Heart in eighth grade, and our teacher was like, "Okay guys, it's time to make you listen to a recording with creepy sound effects in the background with the lights off!" I don't think this spoiler tag even needs to be here, but...
Freakin' scary, man. but I loved it. The narrator's descent into madness was so amazing and I just absolutely loved it because he was just completely in denial about everything and you never really think about what insane people are like. Hell, maybe the guy isn't insane anyways. We had to prove that he was either insane or sane, and I chose sane just because it was a challenge and it was wonderful. I need to read more, though. Hm.

The Raven is without a doubt my favorite but his works are simply brilliant. The House of Usher, The Black Cat, Tell-Tale Heart, Masque of the Red Death are absolutely amazing.

I know that this thread is hecka old but I might as well necro it. I got a collection of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories and poems. The book was really thick but I only got it for $2.99 at the Thrift Store. While I was waiting for my grandma and aunt, I was reading the book the entire time. I haven't read all of his stories and poems but I've read Annabelle Lee, Eulalie, The Raven, Pit and the Pendulum, and other poems. Here's the picture for it: My cat loves Edgar Allan Poe too. The book is heavy and it's around 1000+ pages.

Lucky! Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite authors and poets, The Raven is actually how I really learned about how rhythm should sound when being read (primarily when The Simpsons narrated it of course.) Annabell Lee will always be a favorite, and The Mask of the Red Death was very interesting to reread when I learned of his past.
