First of all, forgive me if this is slightly in the wrong section, it's my first post, but hopefully that won't stop people giving me a little feedback.
As a bit of background, I've been going through a creative slump for a while but was finally struck with an idea. After giving it a little bit of though I decided to put the bare bones of it here, because having read this board in the past, I know it's users to be intelligent and able to communicate well.
So, on to the idea. It's a novel, or rather an idea for one.
The main themes of the idea are the past, and man's inability to escape from it, and a loss of faith, be it in the characters religion, spouse, or whatever else it could be.
I've decided to go for a multiple point of view narrative all centred around one location, an expensive block of flats in a well to do area of London.
The rough ideas for the five main characters are.
-A male psychiatrist, who becomes connected to the other characters as they come to see him, somewhat informally, for help.
-An alcoholic writer, a success in literary but not commercial circles, suffering through a bout of writers block that is rendering him unable to start the novel he believes will give him the commercial success he is entitled to.
-His wife (both are in their mid 30s), a would be actress who works odd jobs in the city while auditioning for plays. They struggle to meet the payments the need to for their home. Their story focuses on their relationship with each other and how it is impacted by the alcoholism of the husband and his inability to complete his novel.
-A middle aged doctor and his unemployed wife, both Oxford graduates, once again alcohol plays a role, though neither have been heavy drinkers for some time. Given her volatile personality the wife struggled to hold down a job, and has has affairs in the past. Before the novel begins their son is murdered in a random killing, information they receive at the beginning of the novel, and much of their story focuses on their struggle to cope with this.
Of course as the story goes on the characters begin to cross-circles and interact more.
Anyway, that's the general idea right now, I hope you've taken the time to read through that big block of text and can give me some feedback, thanks.
