I think publishers may still be looking for the next Twilight. As much as I hate them, they were a HUGE cash cow and brought in tonnes of money. Granted, the ends don't justify the means.

I guess the one thing we can be thankful for is that Twilight never went Dethklok to become the seventh biggest economy in the world.
On topic: This is BULLSHIT! I had to go to an indie publishing house to get my book published, and apparently sales - while decent - aren't record-breaking. I kept getting rejected because publishers weren't interested in the 'something different' about my story. If all publishers want is bs fanfics, hell! I'll sell them the Torchwood fixfic I wrote with a friend after Ianto died!

I guess theres hope. If one of the million bad fanfic writers can make it big, then maybe it won't take long for a GOOD fanfic writer to do the same. Maybe this is just the nasty downward slope of a great and beautiful climb. Please...Please let it be that. Wow, I sure hope so. (That is, if people consider me a good writer, I don't want to act all arrogant and just declare that I am one)

Is the best way for a new writer to get anything original sold nowadays is through self-publishing? It's just depressing . . .

She definitely seems more down-to-earth, and I have to admit I like that she's not making any excuses for what she wrote (unlike a certain author-MEYER!). Meyer tried to excuse inconsistencies by saying "I don't have to research, it's fantasy, and it's AMAZING!" James just kind of seems to say, "It's a fantasy, and for some reason it's insanely popular, and I'm not complaining." Not sure I would complain, either.

Neither would I, but I'd also not publish something that so clearly causes me pain. I'd publish something I'd -hope- would get popular because, to me, it's a story that people should read, and I'd be proud if it were popular.

The funny thing right now is that she has a website that says her next book is in the works and has nothing to do with this trilogy. Wonder what that will be like without the Twilight connections.

Hopefully she's a good writer and she'll be able to shake being type-casted with these books.

Why the music? Just...why? I understand using it; I do it frequently, too. Music can evoke emotions and get you in the right frame of mind to write a scene. But putting down every piece you listened to for the writing work? That's very..."Dark Side of the Moon." At least Meyer stuck with her favorite artists and only mentioned a few specific songs. That's very fanfic author of James.

Wow, you can tell how dark and edgy her book is when it has Britney Spears and Bruce Springsteen on the playlist. And when I think of kinky, BDSM sex, I think of Snow Patrol and Frank Sinatra. What would really round out this list would be some Coldplay...and I see that Coldplay appears in later list for later books. Nice.

I assign certain songs to certain characters as unofficial leitmotifs while writing, but I'm not likely to share it with anyone unless they specifically asked. (And most of the music I use are found in soundtracks, so it wouldn't be common for people to know what songs I was talking about anyway.)
But, yeah, the thing is that it really does depend on whether or not the music even fits the mood of the storyline at the time. The wrong song can give the wrong mood and cause an overall "meh" reaction, instead of what was intended. Or it just comes across as out of place. You can sometimes see that happen in movies, TV, and video games.

I burst out laughing seeing what songs are on the tracklist, especially Sexy Bitch. Toxic by Britney Spears is enough to tell me how dirrrty the author wants her stuff to be. Brb, gonna laugh some more.

^ Agreed. I didn't know that Britney or Ella Fitzegerald was on that author's playlist. I don't want them to be tainted with this series like how Muse and Death Cab for Cutie was tainted with the Twilight Saga.
I used to write AU Pokemon fanfics (about the trainers living in a world without Pokemon) when I was in my early teens. I wouldn't dream trying to legitly publish that. Once again, I can't express how shocked am I that 50 Shades of Grey is popular.

I have an EW magazine that has an article on it, and if my memory doesn't fail me, they mention that this book crosses the line to abuse. I'll look for it and post it at a later time.
Possession - Sarah McLachlan. The song she was sued for by a stalker saying that parts of the song were from his letters to her. Lovely right?

... I actually got removed from one of those Facebook "I like books and reading"-type groups/pages because I said 50 Shades of Grey sucked. Same here. It's kind of sad. I almost got banned from a Goodreads group because I said I didn't like the sample and wasn't going to buy the book. But then again most people in that group liked Twilight and Outlander, and both books have abusive themes like 50 Shades. I didn't get banned or else almost a third of the group would have gotten the boot for not liking that book.

^ That's ridiculous! I seriously think people these days have no taste anymore... =_= Agreed. I stopped posting on that group until the end of this week so hopefully things would have died down for a while. Most of the people in that group are nice until you say you don't like certain books, and then they become bastards to deal with due to being butthurt fantards. They honestly are starting to make diehard Kagamine and Miku/Kaito shippers look tame. And I didn't think that was possible at all. Anyways, my friend and I looked on the Amazon page and we lol'd over one of the descriptions about the book.: All we can say is, where the bleep is the humor? All it's about is sex, sex, sex and more sex with a heavy dose of abuse disguised by BSDM. I have to agree with most of the 1021 one star reviews.
