It's not a love story. It's not a BDSM story. It's a rape story. END of story. All you have to do is look at the contract and realize that James has NO CLUE what she is talking about, BDSM-wise. Submissive contract my ass--that's a SLAVE contract, and there is a BIG DIFFERENCE between a submissive and a slave. And that is hardly the end of it. But I'm not the one to tell you all that is wrong with this book. They are.You forgot controlling, abusive boyfriend. I quote a voicemail from Christian: ‘I think you need to learn to manage my expectations. I am not a patient man. If you say you are going to contact me when you finish work, then you should have the decency to do so. Otherwise, I worry, and it’s not an emotion I’m familiar with, and I don’t tolerate it very well. Call me.’ Will he ever give me a break? I scowl at the phone. He is suffocating me. With a deep dread uncurling in my stomach, I scroll down to his number and press dial. My heart is in my mouth as I wait for him to answer. He’d probably like to beat seven shades of shit out of me. The thought is depressing. The hero of this story, ladies and gentlemen. The Community Violence Intervention Center in my city is preparing for the increase in business this will undoubtedly give them. Okay I don't know about that last part, but I think they should gear up anyway.

^*reaches whole new levels of wtfuckery*
Look, ladies. I know you think this is sexy, but please don't apply this to a real-life scenario featuring you and a guy like Christian.
ALSO:
Whats-her-name plays the Feisty Card, and fails to deliver the message of proper action against a controlling, would-be stalker. Dump the bas-tehd, bitch.
"My heart is in my mouth". Are your lungs in your throat too?
You know what's more depressing than the thought of getting physically beaten-up by your slightly teed-off boyfriend? I think I may never get a proper-paying job.

Wow...I'm caught between laughing hysterically at that girl's FANTASTIC dramatic reading, and wanting to projectile vomit at WHAT she's reading. I'm so conflicted... I think I really would listen to these books if either of them did the reading though...guh I'm a bad person...but I need the lulzzzzzzzzz! Especially since the fact that it's been published greatly depresses me.

Haven't read it, didn't want to read it, never really want to read it. I mean, just from what I gathered, this woman seems to be very sexually frustrated. Seriously... listening to some of the dramatic readings feels like that my brain is eating a cheeseburger, sure, it might get you off a bit or it tastes good, but afterwards, your brain feels empty and mindless and you think to yourself "why did I read that?" much like a huge cheeseburger you might feel bloated or fat and sometimes make you feel like "why did I just eat that?" it might not have provided you with the best nutrition depending on the burger and most of the calories are just excessive.
It's a weird analogy I know...

No, that makes sense. I try to read whatever's pop to be able to discuss and understand what's trending (idk...I wanna be a writer someday and I've read that it's good to know what's what) but there's just no way I could read something like this. I'd totally buy an audiobook from that youtube drunken reading girl- I'd listen to her reading Atlas Shrugged, she's that funny.

Seriously I get so annoyed when people try to bash Anne for that or disrespect those wishes. You have to understand those characters are all deeply personal to her, she put so much into creating them. It's just too strange for her to see people writing for them when they are a part of her really. And yet she publish her books where people can do what she doesn't want them to do with her characters. Also: "This statement was then followed up by attacks on Anne Rice fanfic authors. The attacks consisted of, amongst other things, e-mailed threats regarding not only the writing of fanfiction but any writing that any fanfic author attempted to engage in (regardless of who owned the copyright), attacks on businesses that the fanfic authors owned and weeks of harassing personal letters sent to fanfic author's e-mail addresses and guestbooks. Personal information about fanfic authors was also dug up by Anne Rice employees and used as part of the harassment. Suffice it to say, Anne Rice made her displeasure clear." --- If this is true, you're angry when people bash her? The last time I'm checked harassing and threating people is illegal. I'm glad I never read her books if she's going to act like that to her fans, of all people.
Quotes from two nice people: "I suppose the character is public ground. If you're willing to bring it into people's houses every week, the fans are entitled to certain liberties, where ever their imagination is carried by those characters." --Paul Gross, aka Ben Fraser and Executive Producer of Due South, quoted in the Toronto Globe & Mail, August 8, 1998.
"I've read some of it... I find it very flattering that people love the characters that much." - J.K. Rowling on Harry Potter fanfiction that can be found via the Internet. Fall 2000.
That is a flat out lie. I know exactly what happened when Anne cracked down on the fan fic and that wasn't it.

Oh my, I am not making this up. After reading some of 50 Shades of Grey before I threw the book at the wall because I couldn't take it anymore, I got to say that I am deeply, deeply disturbed. It completely turned me off from anything sexual and now I can hardly sleep without thinking Christian is watching me or going to rape me. I'm really, really scared.
I'm sure the BDSM community is not anything like this asshole, but man, I feel like I can't do anything right now I'm so traumatized. Really, really traumatized, as in, I don't want to have sex ever traumatized and I am kind of afraid of being in a relationship with a guy now traumatized.
Seriously, I didn't think it would be this bad. I mean, just writing this post, makes me feel like a wreck and I'm about to burst into tears. I am really, really disturbed right now and been like that for the past few days and it is really affecting my life. I'm serious.
I never thought that a 19 year old woman like me could get so traumatized over a book. It feels like my mind has been raped.

Oh, hon, I know how you feel! I'm a christian and celibate, but I don't really have a problem reading about characters with differing behavioral choices as long as it's telling a story, but I draw the line at the pornographic. I almost burst into tears over the pedophilia in Ann Rice's Lasher and it literally gave me nightmares I'll never forget. I'd highly recommend you steer clear of what you can't handle, especially since it's such trash, and maybe read some Austen or Elizabeth Gaskell; they always cheer me up.

I was at a wedding this weekend and one of the guests told the bride to take 50 shades of grey on her honeymoon with her. I'm pretty sure one of the other guests then told her she was so dirty or something. But in that approving way, you know?
Urgh! It's breaking records here in the UK and it's such badly written, plotless un-sexy trash. I don't understand the world right now.

I just hope they refuse bids to adapt 50 Shades of Grey into a film. I'd hate to see the results... *shudder*
@madaraki: I saw the Gilbert Gottfried video and thought it was hilarious too. Can you imagine Christopher Walken reading a passage from it?

This book is just like any trashy romance novel, except it gains popularity because of its association to Twilight. I doubt anyone would want this on the silver screen, or even on TV. Pay-per-view, probably just for lulz.

^This.
If it were a matter of a compelling story involving two sadly warped people and how they learn to somehow overcome their massive issues and BDSM was merely the vague backdrop for deeper human issues then actors being interested in portraying it wouldn't bother me. But it's not; it's just badly written fanfic trash, pandering to horny housewives. I enjoy Ian S.'s work, and I think he's a competent actor, but I won't be able to take him seriously if he plays in this trainwreck of a story.

I get the feeling that this is what people think it is. Critics and such like seem to actual be convincing themselves that it is some deeper analysis of the human psyche when it's really just the most deplorable trash. I'm hoping half these actors attached are being told the same thing too.

I agree!!
See Anne Rice already did that with Exit to Eden and she also worked in the erotica without compromising the story and the truth of the characters.

From what I hear about this, how would they even make a movie of it unless it was a porno movie?

From what I hear about this, how would they even make a movie of it unless it was a porno movie? I can see it now: Title: 50 Shades of Grey Rated NC-17 for heavy sexual themes, violence and domestic abuse Most mature films do come out explicitly, but as long as they don't say it's okay for young teens to watch this come onto the silver screen, then fine. Let the adults indulge. Just don't call it a masterpiece, please.

Tried to read this, it's actually awful. You can *tell* it's based on Twilight because it's like that but somehow WORSE? I'm 98% sure it's a parody. How do people actually take it seriously?

Also I've been trying to read this book from a friend... My house got cleaned and I learned some music theory. I haven't even made past page 20 and I had that book for over a month.

Doug Walker (Nostalgia Critic) and Team Four Star read some of this book at a convention they went to recently, doing different voices. And my God is it glorious XD

Because when you put BDSM porn into text format, and sprinkle some pretentious bullshit over it, it suddenly becomes soul-touching art. ...Fuck the professional artistic medium.
