^ One commenter said that they felt like all three of those people at one time or another while reading the books. Thought that was amusing.

Now that I've read a couple of sporkings, I'm a bit more familiar with what the story is like. And god, it fails in every imaginable way.
At the most basic, it's really shitty fanfic. Bella and Rosalie (Kate) are lovey-dovey roommates? Are you fucking kidding me? And like Twilight, it has a premise that can easily be busted: Ana doesn't do the interview. END OF STORY. She has very legitimate reasons not to do it, like, oh, NOT BEING PART OF THE SCHOOL MAGAZINE STAFF. The premise is just so fucking contrived it hurts.
Also, the story suffers from the same "obviously written by a middle-aged person" syndrome as Twilight. Ana, a student, has no computer. I repeat, Ana, a student in the year 2011, has no computer. (And no, it's not because she can't afford it.) This is just so fucking unrealistic. Sure, it would be impractical, but I suppose you can use the computers in the libraries for your essays. But... what about all the other stuff? When I started going to university, I was quite surprised at how much you actually need your computer, not just for doing the course work, but also for getting registered for everything, getting your grades, submitting course work, and most importantly, getting emails from the university. I'm sure you can somehow manage without a computer, but honestly, it would just be too impractical.
Furthermore, 50 Shades brings out the absolute worst of Bella and Edward. Edward's abusiveness is ramped up to eleven, as are his other bad qualities. And Bella... oh, fucking Bella. Ana is dumb as a fucking brick and 10 times as melodramatic as Bella.
And it's a sad thing - I think I should wash my hands after writing this - that I have to say that at least on SOME level, Twilight!Edward and Bella had reasons for their behaviour. Of course, the execution was terrible, but you know, it's okay to angst over being in love with a vampire (or for the vampire to angst about being in love with a human.) Ana angsting over Christian does not make a lick of sense. There is literally nothing stopping them from just fucking being together.
And to make things worse, at least the mutual attraction between Twilight!Edward and Bella was kind of justified. Badly justified, but I guess I can live with "vampiric perfection" and "bacon-y goodness". What do Christian and Ana have? Nothing. Ana fucking drools whenever he looks at her... but why? This does not happen irl. Sure, you can turn into a stammering idiot in front of some really attractive person, but you know, you get used to it. You don't have conversations with them and just keep thinking, "Hawthawthawthawthawt," and blush in every paragraph. And Christian is attracted to her because she's... a doormat?
But let's take a closer look at both leads.
Christian is an abusive, absolutely unlikeable, horrible human being. And no, him feeding half of Africa does not redeem him, especially not when it's done in this really awful "White Saviour" kind of way.
He stalks Ana, he undresses her without her consent and while they're not together, he sexually harasses her at her work place, and he manipulates the hell out of her.
The worst scene is the one where they have sex for the first time. Well, it starts before that. Ana tells him that she's a virgin. And Christian fucking FREAKS OUT. His reasons? A) He's mad she didn't tell him even if she had no reason to. B) He apparently doesn't like virgins. And C) HE THINKS SHE'S LYING TO HIM BECAUSE SHE'S TOO ~GORGEOUS~ TO NOT HAVE HAD SEX.
And okay, then he wants to "rectify the situation" and they have sex... which borders on rape because Ana (we'll get to that later) has no fucking idea what's going on. So, how does our hero make love to our virginal heroine? He slams into her and "rips through her virginity". He's fucking brutal, and worst of all, he wants Ana to be sore the next day. Honestly, he's just fucking despicable. If it had been part of the kink, okay, fine. But it wasn't. Ana repeatedly uses the phrase "make love". She wants Christian to make love to her, which implies a certain tenderness. And no, it's not okay just because she enjoys it anyway. It wouldn't work like that in real life. While of course mind-blowing first time sex is partof the fantasy and nothing I'd object to, what happens in this book is just horrifying.
Ana, as I said, is much worse than Bella. Most of her behaviour makes no sense, and what makes the least sense is her pure purity. She apparently has absolutely no idea about sex. NONE. You can make a reasonable argument that she doesn't know that the penis goes into the vagina. I think you can almost make the reasonable argument that she doesn't even know she has a hole down there. Somehow, she managed to live her entire life in some kind of bubble. Not to mention that she just has this crushingly low self-esteem for some reason. Of course, this only makes her more appealing to Christian.
As I said above, Ana is a complete doormat. But what's worse is that she just keeps bitching about it, like Bella. She really, really doesn't want to do the interview. THEN DON'T DO IT. Instead, she keeps bitching about Kate. I think it's Jennifer Armintrout who pointed out that Ana is just the kind of friend who tells you that it's, "No problem at all. You can count on me. Oh, silly, it's not a bother, really!" and then proceeds to call her other friend for a three days bitching session about how you always make her do stuff for you. To compare with other doormats, how about Toru Honda from Fruits Basket. I absolutely love her, even though she's a doormat. Why? Because she's kind. She doesn't do nice things for other people because she doesn't have the guts to stand up to them. She does nice things because she is a nice person. But back to Ana and Christian.
Their relationship is awful. Even before she signs the contract, he controls her in pretty much every aspect of her life. This is not acceptable. Not to mention that he basically bullies her into signing the contract. THIS IS NOT HOW IT SHOULD WORK.
One very prominent aspect of the control is Christian's weird obsession with feeding Ana. And it would be one thing if it were feedism, but nothing indicates that. Which brings us to another problematic thing... when your protagonist is called Ana, perhaps it's a bit of a bad idea to focus on how she should eat more and how she's "too skinny" when she really isn't. It's generally a bit of a pet-peeve of mine, because I have an ED myself. Dear authors, stop calling your characters "too skinny" when they aren't. To me, this is basically a shorthand for "She's attractive, which OF COURSE includes being thin... but I don't want to write it that way because thin people make you think of those eeevil popular girls... Oh, I've got it! I'll disguise it as a flaw! Oh, woe is her, she's too skinny!" If your character is supposed to be "too skinny", then also include something that actually indicates it. Pants never fitting well because her thighs are too thin. Or never finding the right size because those that fit her thighs and hips well are too short. It doesn't have to enter angst-territory. Just don't keep telling me that the character is "too skinny" when everybody insists they are absolutely perfect and gorgeous.
Now, maybe, just maybe, I could ignore that all, if it were all just an excuse for the fucking. If the sex is hot, I could maybe ignore all the other aspects and indulge a bit.
But it's not.
This is the new hot sizzling thing? That's the "porn" that makes people gasp? I'VE READ FIC PROMPTS that were hotter. The mood is entirely ruined by bad writing and Ana going "Jeez!" all the time. It makes her seem kind of confused about what's happening and it's just about as erotic as "gosh".
And no, James, just because Ana says, "OMG IT'S THE HOTTEST THING ANYONE HAS EVER SAID TO ME," doesn't mean it is. "I want to bite that lip." Have your panties dropped yet? Ana's did, apparently.
The BDSM... well, honestly, it's fucking vanilla, and it barely happens. It's the "safe" kind of bdsm. And to paraphrase Todd in the Shadows, not safe as in "everybody remembers the safe word", but safe as in "it's not going to alienate anyone".
I once read a bdsm book. And while the plot was dumber than the characters, it delivered. It was hot. It took risks. It had creative scenarios. It started with the main character being tied naked to her car seat. Don't get me wrong, I laughed my ass off most of the time, but it tried at least. 50 Shades doesn't try anything. In fact, everything potentially risqué is excluded right at the beginning. "Oh, we'll do bdsm, but don't worry, there won't be knives or freaky shit like that, just a little spanking." (That does not mean that bdsm without knives or "freaky shit" isn't legit or anything. However, for this supposedly edgy book, it's just disappointing.

^ Great write up. I have to say, I think this book is only risky to people who know very little about BDSM. The kind of people who want to believe they're daring in bed and stuff but who are so controlled by ideas of what's right and wrong that anything outside or the missionary position is a thrill. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but this seems like a gross abuse of the term BDSM. Dominants are dominant in bed. They don't extend the relationship to controlling their whole partner's life. Why would anyone find that attractive?

Why would anyone find that attractive? Exactly. It is a bit spicier than regular vanilla sex, but it's not exactly dangerous either. It says BDSM, but it's filled with socially "acceptable" kinks like blindfolding, mild spanking and perhaps a bit of tying up. Please, I saw that in some commercial for hair dye when I was 10. (Well, there was no spanking, but tying up.) There are 24/7 relationships. But here's where the abusiveness kicks in again: Christian doesn't explain those things properly to her, and he forbids her to talk to other people about it. I doubt Ana knows how to find out herself. As far as she knows, the only way to engage in BDSM is to do it that way.

I saved her from reading Twilight but now she's sucked into this "fad." Yay.

Haha, my mother is all like "BDSM is of the devil!" so she is definitely not going to read that. Plus, she saw me seriously traumatized from reading 50 Shades that she isn't going to read it. Part of me is sort of turned off my BDSM right now too. Plus, i'm still kind of jaded from break up last month with my ex-boyfriend who cheated on me.

I think that write up describes everything I had with that book.
After reading 50 Shades of Grey, I have to say that even Twilight is better than it. But not by much.
It honestly disturbs me to no end that some people on a lot of reviews say that Christian Grey is an ideal man. It now makes sense on why there is such a high level of domestic abuse because people think its alright and romantic.

^ I don't think most people realize that it IS abuse.
I had an acquaintance who believed that men who "momentarily lose themselves" are so in love with their wives or girlfriends just "can't control their emotions, because they're so devoted to their women." *rolls eyes so hard, she almost gets a migraine*
I remember a poster from the old forums saying that experience is the best lesson, adding that if it'll take an abusive relationship for these people to learn that abuse isn't romantic or healthy, then that's how it might have to be. Ordinarily, I wouldn't agree, but with Edward 2.0 becoming another example of the "ideal man," I will agree.
I know it's harsh, but like that poster said...
I also recall reading an article on HuffPo about how BDSM erotica is now on the rise, and how it points to a disturbing trend in how women want to live through 50 Shades-type fiction. The last line of the article went something like this: "Ladies, be prepared to make your bed and be tethered to it."

It now makes sense on why there is such a high level of domestic abuse because people think its alright and romantic. You know when the excuse, "It's just fiction!" often pops up among Twihard arguments with antis in the past? That might actually apply to this. It's sad, but they can get away with this excuse. Quite frankly, it would be even more disturbing if 50 Shades of Grey was written based on actual experience...then glorified and portrayed to be romantic as hell.

Just read the whole thread but not all the videos yet and I just... *buys stock in brain bleach*
Okay, I knew it was bad, but I didn't know it was this bad! What is most disappointing is that this is seen as an ideal, something women are to aspire to. Genuine pedophilia? Some rich bastard who has deep emotional issues and is an abuser... seen as an ideal?? The protagonist that makes Bella seem like she has some spine?
I feel physically sick. Said I wasn't going to armchair psychoanalyze, but dammit I'm disgusted. This is exactly the type of shit that fuels the stereotype that women secretly want to be dominated because they're tired of being in control in all other aspects of their lives. "It's just fiction", my big ass. Yes, I know it's not exactly right to make those types of judgments (and one could do the same for what I read) but to hell with it. This is highly upsetting. I'm not even sure if I can get through the sporkings.
Now about asexuality. It would be hella nice to read some romances featuring those who have no sexual desire-or at least not until meeting "the one", and have it not be because of some serious mental issues or other such bullshit. That is, given it meets all my other standards.

I don't have an issue with BDSM if it is done CORRECTLY or if it purposefully shown in the wrong way. But glorifying an abusive relationship under the cover of BDSM is so wrong. It makes me angry.
These people who read it, if they read a true BDSM erotica like Anne Rice's 'Sleeping Beauty' series...they would be so confused.

I guess this is the right place to put this. If you thought the Twilight covers given to the classics were bad ... I'm really, really hoping this is unreliable, but if it's not, it just got worse.
EL James’ work has been such a literary sensation that publisher Total E-Bound have decided to give the classics a racy 50 Shades-style makeover.
So if you’ve ever wondered what would happen between the sheets with Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy, you’re in luck.
Clandestine Classics founder Claire Siemaszkiewicz said: ”Some people will love this and some will hate it. We’re hoping we’ll change their minds or blow their minds.”[/quote] And a few extracts in case anyone can't see the Sun page, spoilered for length; the new additions to the books in bold:
Pride and Prejudice:
Elizabeth longed to observe that Mr Bingley had been a most delightful friend, so easily guided that his worth was invaluable; but she checked herself.
She remembered that he had yet to learn to be laughed at, and it was rather too early to begin. In anticipating the happiness of Bingley, which, of course, was to be inferior only to his own, Mr Darcy continued the conversation for a little while. When he was convinced they were in no danger of being interrupted by the lovers he turned to Elizabeth and said, “As we now, I believe, are very much alone, would you consent to honouring me with a kiss?”
Elizabeth had no objections. It had been some time that she had wished for the same thing herself and she agreed eagerly with a nod of her head, words having failed her.
Mr Darcy placed his hands on her upper arms and leaned in slowly, his eyes intent on her mouth.
“You have no idea how much I’ve dreamed of your lips against mine,” said he. “The memory of your kiss often kept me awake at night and well into the morning hours and I have long since desired to feel your heat engulfing me, to have your soft, beautiful body writhing in ecstasy beneath mine own.”
and Jane Eyre:
“I ask you to pass through life at my side — to be my second self, and best earthly companion. For that fate you have already made your choice, and must abide by it. Jane, be still a few moments, you are over-excited. I will be still too.” My master captured my wrists and secured them behind my back, imprisoning me and preventing my movements... With my pain, I choked back a cry and whispered, “I cannot, Mr Rochester, by all that is holy.” “Be still, Jane, I implore you,” he interjected.
He exerted the force of his will as effortlessly as he schooled my person, relentlessly and with an inexorable force, he commanded me against his body. Those torrid throbbings of desire filled my deepest recesses.

I had never heard of this book until 102.7 KIIS FM, more specifically Ryan Seacrest, talked about the story and how popular it was getting.. I didn't buy the books, but borrowed them from a friend and I didn't even read the books! More like read the first couple of chapters and then skim through the rest of the books. In my opinion, the books and characters had a lot of potential (yes I am aware that it is an erotica) but seeing as this is a Twilight fanfic, aka Total ripoff of the original series, there was no room for real improvement.. However, I do find it completely stupid that fanfics can become published and gain a lot of momentum! This is pretty much a slap on the face for those who want to publish original ideas! It's like saying that plagiarizing is okay as long as the names are completely different! I fear for the state of Literature nowadays.

I'm kind of annoyed at how Ana jumps back and forth between severe cognitive dissonance and nearly smug self-awareness, between crippling shyness and relaxed coyness.
We have Ana ask herself again and again why Christian could possibly want her. Then she turns around and infantilises her appearance in order to discourage his sexual advances. (It doesn't work.)
Ana can barely look at Christian without turning into a blushing, stammering mess. And then she dances around in his kitchen.
To the author's credit, she has Christian ask Ana at one point why she's so different when they aren't communicating in person. And while in the hands of a good author, this could actually be explored in an interesting way, in 50 Shades, it feels like an inconsistency of Ana's character. I suppose it's a result of it being a Twilight fanfiction, and James trying to force Bella into the role of... well, whatever she was going for. Snarky? Confident? Independent? It seems to me that she wanted to characterise Ana as a smart and independent woman who succumbs to some guy, and now struggles between her desire for independence and desire for that guy. Problem is, nothing about Ana says smart or independent.

A Plot that isn't shaped by it's characters, but rather, bends and twists it's characters so that events happen the way the writer damn well pleases, wether or not it makes sense. Amateur fanfics suffer a lot from this, it's almost as if 50 Shades is a fanfic... ...I hate the professional literal world, seriously, DON'T YOU HAVE ANY STANDARDS?

I didn't know there was a term for it. You know, I generally wonder about that when it comes to Twilight fanfiction. My friend reads it, and it seems that the most popular stories are AU and AH (all human). They get THOUSANDS of comments. And while I don't doubt that some of them actually are good, I'm not sure why they are still considered Twilight fanfiction. I mean, 50 Shades is close enough, I suppose. But most of the stories my friend tells me about don't have ANYTHING to do with Twilight. It's original fic with borrowed names, and while they don't make money, it's quite obvious that without the connection to Twilight, the stories wouldn't get nearly as many reviews. I do generally like AU stories, but if you're writing an AU, the biggest challenge is keeping the characters recognisable. Twilight's characters are so two-dimensional, there's not really anything to keep recognisable.

Bedroom badasses lol... more like dumbasses really...
Anyways, yeah... I looked at some of those items on that link too... I mean, they are fine... I guess I mean, I'm not really a sex toy connoisseur... though I can tell that they are more for those who are BDSM noobs or read 50 shades of grey and think that is the BDSM instruction manual or something, I don't know... anyways yeah... Again, 50 Shades has completely turned me off from BDSM rather than make me more interested simply because it shows me everything that can go wrong should I choose to give power to the wrong dominant, though, if that happens, I would RUN! I know it's easier said than done, but I don't care if he tells me not to tell anyone what goes on in the bedroom, I'm telling everything to my psychiatrist.

Ladies, if you ever follow any of the tips that this magazine gives, I will punch you in the ovaries so godamn hard you'll puke a placenta. And no jury in the world would condemn me.
^ Um please don't say things like that.
But I would not take sex tips for a lady who has so little understanding of real passion.
