I honestly don't know where to post this thread, but considering that it's a book in its own right, I guess it's appropriate to post it here.
So, 50 Shades of Grey by E.L. James, an erotic novel about a consensual BDSM relationship that is getting more and more popular. "Now Universal and Focus Features have picked up the movie rights for reportedly close to $5 million" according to Entertainment Weekly, the most reliable source of all.
Aaand... it's a Twilight fanfiction. A fucking Twilight fanfiction called Masters of the Universe. Of course, it was AU and all humans, meaning that it had absolutely nothing to do with Twilight apart from the names. And yet it has become hugely popular. Why? No idea. From what I've read about it, it sounds like The Secretary. And one of the (probably unintended) highlights (of the fic, at least) is a scene where Edward yanks out Bella's tampon to fuck her. Feeling the hotness right there.
Also, I don't know why, but I think it's kind of sleazy for a variety of reasons to change the names in your fic and publish it.

I think it's safe to assume that, if this book really is real (which I'm having a hard time believing since it's just so insane), Meyer has absolutely no idea that it exists and when she does find out she's going to (justly) throw a shitfit.

Well, it's real. I wish it wasn't. Kristen and Rob have apparently found out about it recently, so it probably won't be long until Meyer finds out. I wonder if she has any legal claims.

This leads to an interesting debate . . .
The fan fiction itself belongs to the author for the most part (with the exception of song fics and fics based on/rips-off the script from other works). Should it be legal for them to actually publish it IF they change the names of the characters?

It makes me wonder too. On the one hand, yes, the story was so removed from the source material, it would be almost wrong to call it fanfic. (Honestly, when does it stop being fanfic? AU, fine, but at some point, you're just writing original fiction. The only reason I can think of is that that way, you get more comments.) But on the other hand, it was intended and published online as fanfiction. I know this is not the first fanfic that's published, but apparently, it's the first one that got SO successful.

^ Agreed. Also I tried to bing the original fanfic, and the site says it's unable to locate it. But I did find this: www.popculturejunkie.net/profiles/blogs/master-of-the-universeI also have to thank you guys for posting about this. I was almost going to buy that book because someone highly recommend it to me. I don't like seeing published fanfic at all.

If the story is not a complete rip off of the original and has been retweeked to make it look more professional, then I say publish it.
But it seems like this is just a lazy copy+paste so don't bother . . . especially since some people have claimed that the editors sometimes forgot to change the names.

I haven't read this book but I've read about it and, yeah, it sounds horrid. And it is exactly like the fan fiction version. I know someone ran the published version and the original fanfic through an online app designed to catch plagiarism and there was only an eleven percent difference. Basically, the names are changed and a couple lines reworded.
I think the book really does present an interesting ethical issue. For me I think it's wrong because James exploited the Twilight fandom. She got her base there.

Yeah, it's as if she basically used them as their test audience/beta readers. That's extremely sleazy. Also, apparently, it's the first book of a fucking trilogy? My god. And here I am, hoping to be successful with a story I pour my heart into. Screw this, I'll just change the names of a fic I wrote when I was 14.

But well, what works for a fic does not necessarily work for an original story.

I saw this being advertised on Extra last night. (It's apparently already getting a movie deal..) Personally there have been several fanfiction stories out there that I would have gladly paid for if they ever went the original fiction route. The one that I'm currently reading, All Danger is Near to Death from the Elderscrolls fandom, is sadly so close to the original canon that it would have to be absolutely gutted in order to make it as an original book and survive any legal challenges. Yet, if the author decided to take their main character Sigrid and warp her journey and the mythos of the world enough to make them original - I'm buy it in a heartbeat. (However Sigrid is an original character and is deliciously flawed enough to be compelling. Not-Bella from this series, is well, just Bella Swan with a different name and background.) However, I agree that there is something off putting about the fact that this author is essentially piggy backing off the Twilight fandom to get her twenty minutes. Especially since the book differs very little from the original fanfiction. What bothers me though is the fact that this book apparently, I'm only reading a sporking of it so I can't fairly judge, glorifies abuse even more blatantly than Twilight does. Which, if true, leaves me baffled as to why people would fall for this shit again.

IT'S A TWILIGHT FANFIC!?!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAA!
I heard a thing about this today and it being a bestseller and an "erotica." I remembered seeing the name on here and came over to have a look but I can't believe it's a published Twilight porn fic. Basically it was written by some Twifan to get their rocks off and now they're making money from it? Urgh. Seems so tacky.
On Amazon they have two more books by her called "FiftyShades Darker" and "Fifty Shades Freed." They all have fairly Twilighty covers too.
Fifty SHades Darker synnopsis - "Daunted by the dark secrets of the tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Ana Steele has broken off their relationship to start a new career with a US publishing house.
But desire for Grey still dominates her every waking thought, and when he proposes a new arrangement, she cannot resist. Soon she is learning more about the harrowing past of her damaged, driven and demanding Fifty Shades than she ever thought possible.
But while Grey wrestles with his inner demons, Ana must make the most important decision of her life. And it's a decision she can only make on her own ..."
Fifty Shades Freed synopsis - "Ana always knew that loving her Fifty Shades would not be easy, and being together poses challenges neither of them had anticipated. Ana must learn to share Grey's opulent lifestyle without sacrificing her own integrity or independence; and Grey must overcome his compulsion to control and lay to rest the horrors that still haunt him.
Now, finally together, they have love, passion, intimacy, wealth, and a world of infinite possibilities.
But just when it seems that they really do have it all, tragedy and fate combine to make Ana's worst nightmares come true ..."
The Twilighty-ness of them is obvious now that I think about it.

"Today" on NBC covered this book - their story was complete with an interview with the author! Apparently the author is embarrassed on some level by this book. The lady interviewing her read a short excerpt and the author was embarrassed to hear it - agonised, even. Rightfully so, this book sounds awful. Also: smartbitchestrashybooks.com/blog/50-shades-of-grey-by-e.l.-jamesI found this to be a bit illuminating.

*headdesk*
If she's embarrassed about the piece, then why did she publish it in order to make money off of it? Now it'll haunt her until the fab dies off.
The humiliation serves her right for publishing a fanfic in order to make a cheap buck.

^ Agreed. There are some old stories that are better off not seeing until they are edited. And even then, some of them are just plain embarrasing. It would be like me trying to sell some of the stuff I wrote when I was fourteen years old, and half of that stuff would embarrass me now as an adult because it's a little purple prose filled.
I don't blame the author for being embarrased now because of that.

I can't believe it, but apparently, "Christian" out-creeps Edward AND Jacob.
I hope that this is not legit, but... (Keep the brain bleach ready)
Christian lies beside me, his hand caressing my belly, his long fingers splayed out wide. “How’s my daughter?” “She’s dancing.” I laugh. “Dancing? Oh yes! Wow. I can feel her.” He grins as Blip Two somersaults inside me. “I think she likes sex already."
This is so, so, so wrong. And then this happens:
"I think Daddy wants to taste popsicle, too,” I whisper in Ted’s little ear. Ted frowns at me, then looks at his hand and holds it out to Christian. Christian smiles and puts Ted’s fingers in his mouth. "Hmm…tasty."

^ Same here. And I couldn't even make it past the opening pages on the look inside feature on Amazon. Plus the look inside feature had a few typos on the first page. It even has the same kinds of cars mentioned in the Twilight saga, and the voice reminds me strongly of Bella. This does not bode well imo.

Actuualy, I think your baby daughter wanted to womb punch her mother for being a Bella rip-off and Christian for being outright insane. Incest AND pedophilia. This what would have happened if Bella chose Jacob.

^ I hope "Daddy" was a term used in the bedroom and they're not actually there with a person who's Christian's son. I hope so. The paedophilia's still tremendously creepy, though. Doesn't matter who's wearing the suit. EDIT: Here are some interviews with this....charming....individual. today.msnbc.msn.com/id/47066520/ns/today-books/#.T5IUSNU9Q40If this is what it takes to get women reading again, we need to be encouraging love of science, philosophy, maths, etc. in women. Good Lord, this is depressing. I'm gonna go read some Sagan...

^ Watching that video now.
"I was inspired by Sephenie Meyer" - Never good words to hear.
"Then I sat down and wrote a novel" - No, you wrote a porno fanfic. There's no shame in that but even teenage girls understand that these things do not a publish worthy book make.
"Well it's a love story. People who fall in love have a lot of sex" - Not the kind of sex you seem to be showing in this book.
To be honest she seems like a nice and normal enough woman but this just shows how Meyer's and Twilight's influence can affect things and how people really will buy any old crap these days.

And the article. Let's get started on that.
"This is my midlife crisis, writ large," she said. "All my fantasies in there, and that's it." - Well, at least she's more honest about it than Meyer, though it's disturbing that people would have these kinds of fantasies.
James thinks of the books as “kind of raw,” and says she doesn’t think she’s a great writer or a very disciplined one. - Again, at least she's honest.

And then the heads of all the asexual people in the world exploded.
I'm personally still in shock that this has actually been legit published. I mean what. It's a porn fic! You can find a billion of them for free online, what makes this one so special that it gets a goddamn publishing deal? Especially when it's fanfic with some names swapped out. =|

I wonder how she feels about asexuals in romantic relationships.
Still, she's not putting these characters on the same level as Romeo and Juliet (yet). She's already better in Meyer in her honesty about it being a fantasy.

Yeah, even though what I'm hearing about this book appears to be utterly repugnant - the fact that she at least seems to acknowledge her own shortcomings is something that's already put her lightyears ahead of Meyer in my eyes.

I had heard of it, but from the sound of it--the book sounds like a Twi-fail ripoff. Like a woman meets a good looking rich guy Also that the woman is someone women can relate to--that to me sounds like its in first person. I learned from being a formal near Twi-hard fan, where I was blind to the issues Twilight had. Anymore now, anytime I see a new book that is in first person (and if its a romance) I will always think it'll be a Twilight ripoff. Oh and from what I read--Shades of Gray is very popular right now--again sounds like when Twilight was new.
Has anyone else read this book?

I am thoroughly disgusted. Now anyone-no any white suburban house mom- that shits out a book can become a best seller....Did you know she has been in Time magazine twice? I've heard about this book and toyed with the idea of reading it, the reviewers said it was so awesome. And she was one of the 100 most influential people of the year!
Can I blow my brains out now? This is un fucking believable. This is the society we live in now. Fanfiction, poorly written PWP fan fucking fiction, can be an NY best seller. People need to stop. Really. Good. If one more of these bored house white house wives makes another "century changing story" I'm going to hurt somebody or myself. Both, who know!!! Not me. Maybe the mayans saw this coming. I guess theres hope. If one of the million bad fanfic writers can make it big, then maybe it won't take long for a GOOD fanfic writer to do the same. Maybe this is just the nasty downward slope of a great and beautiful climb.
Please...Please let it be that.
