^Oh hell yeah they were! And as for female squirrels, I'll take Jess over Triss any day of the week. Let's not forget Lady Amber from Mossflower. Cregga sounds badass though! I want to see her now! You should read The Long Patrol. That was Cregga at her best for me. She had the most awesome weapon too. It was like a spear with an axe-blade coming out one side and a scythe out the other.

Personally my favorite bit with her was in Marlfox when...
She bends a longbow almost into a circle and the arrow's speed/impact is so great that it shoots clear out of the abbey, beyond the walls, and over the path...despite the fact that it takes out several targets (Ascrod being mentioned as the first).
Also, anyone else find it interesting how Bloodwrath evolved from being a basic berserker state (as seen with the likes of Rawnblade and Sunflash) to being more of a sickness that actually has consequences (Cregga, Asheye, Gorath).
Even, in Eulalia!,
The Tabura warns that letting the Bloodwrath take control could very well kill Gorath.

kaynobi - I wasn't trying too. I just haven't gotten to her yet. O.O Dang it, now I'm conflicted over who's more badass. Cregga or Constance? @norn - Okay that sounds really cool! I noticed that even though it's only mentioned twice (?) it still shows up in Mattimeo. Jess gets it when fighting the Painted Ones and Matthias gets it in the final battle. It didn't even seem like a beserker state there, it just seemed like they were really pissed off. Though I do love how Bloodwrath sounds as a disease. Double edged sword.

Hi! Sorry to butt in like this but I wanted to offer my input on this point:
I always considered it as Bryony internalizing her grief over Veil because everyone else at the Abbey would simply go "Why are you wasting time grieving for vermin?" or something along those lines. That said it probably could have been done better.
As for other books, I didn't really enjoy the end of Rogue Crew, mostly because I felt Razzid's death was a cop out and completely underwhelming in comparison to his entrance. I also felt that the namesake of the story was pretty absent throughout and I was looking forward to WANDERING OTTER TRIBE ADVENTURES.
On a different note, I read somewhere that Brian Jacques disliked stories where the situation is gray rather than black/white which influenced his writing, like why certain animals are almost always universally evil but other animals are almost always universally good. On the other hand, some of the animals that come up seem like they could go either side of the spectrum (most notably, cats or birds). It's too bad though, as it would have been nice to see him write stories that had a vermin protagonist or hey, even one focusing on the vermin protag's rise to power!
*sighs at lost opportunities*
