Two years ago, the hero of Triumph City, and the world, the Son of Liberty, decided to retire. After a fierce battle with The Balrog that cost the lives of many, the Son of Liberty realized that he could not be the champion of the city forever, his superhuman youth and stamina had limits.
And so the hero of the Red White and Blue gathered a cadre of young, or just surviving, super humans, and he molded them into a cohesive yet diverse team of heroes to defend the city from evil. The Triumphant.
Little did they know what life would hold in store for them from that day onward...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While I originally had adventures planned out, this time I'm going to be a little more lax and leave it to being a "Slice of life" sorta thing, with superheroes hanging out in all night diners or dance clubs, struggling with their limited social/sex lives, that sort of thing.
However, just to get you thinking about your character so you can play them, I DO ask that you fill out a modified FASERIP or Classic Marvel type character write up. Try not to go overboard, as these are supposed to be Spider-Man or Blue Beetle type characters, not Superman or Hulk.
Character Name: Costume/Appearance: Profile: Powersource: Fighting: Agility: Strength: Endurance: Reason: Intuition: Psyche: Resources: Charisma: Max Health: Starting Karma: Talents/Skills: Powers/Equipment:
And to briefly explain what those mean for those who are not familiar with the system.
Character Name: This is what your character is known as. It can be their birth name, their heroic code name, an alias they use, a nickname they've picked up from their friends, or list any of these you think fits. Costume/Appearance: If your character were to have a physical avatar, what would it look like? Describe that here. You don't have to be excruciatingly detailed, but if someone else is going to write that they see your character, they should be able to out enough to say something like "man in black suit". Profile: Tell us a little something about your character, their mind set, their opinions, perhaps the events in their lives that have led them to where they are. No need to go into detail if you don't want, a few words like "playful" or "Studious" will do if you don't want to write a lot, just proof that you're thinking about the question.
Powersource:Your character is probably going to be a superhero. That means they have powers, and those powers came from something. No need to write out your characters whole origin here, in fact a single word like "Magic" could be all you need to fill this out, unless you want to fill in more.
FASERIP: Stands for Fighting, Agility, Strength, Endurance, Reason, Intuition, and Psyche. Each of them are ranked 1 to 50, with 2 being seriously handicapped in that area(such as an 8 year olds Strength, or a mind controlled minions Psyche), 6 being your average citizen, 20 being a professional at that level, and 30 being Olympic medalist, with everything above that being outright super human. If you're unsure of where your character fits, fill in some kind of benchmark for the ability.
Fighting: Melee combat, with or without weapons. A person with a higher Fighting score can block and counter attack anyone with a lower score, assuming all other factors are equal. Agility: Also includes how flexible and dexterous the character is. A high agility can dodge ranged attacks, is a good shot with ranged attacks, can make multiple attacks per turn, and struggle out of tight ropes. Strength: Lifting strength, striking strength, weight you can easily carry, how fast you can sprint. Endurance: How long your character can go without eating, sleeping, breathing, or how fast they can run long distance. Also factors into poisons or stun effects(a taser or similar) they can ignore. Reason: How smart your character is, their ability to puzzle out problems, remember information, and similar. Intuition: How attentive your character is. Can they easily pick up on clues around them, read other peoples intentions, and be aware of the world around them. Psyche: This is your willpower, your strength of spirit, your magical ability, what you call on to resist being controlled by outside forces, etc.
Resources: This is, roughly, how rich your character is. If they want something, do they have the resources to get it? Batman or Ironman are examples of high Resource characters, while Spider-Man tends to barely get by. Charisma: Appearance, popularity, ability to convince others to go along with you, this is all charisma. By making a display of yourself and a heroic speech your characters very presence will force others to make a check against their Psyche or agree with you. Simply showing up in a bright costume and having a winning smile can sometimes make the bank robbers surrender... but not often.
Max Health: Fighting, Agility, Strength and Endurance scores all added together. These are your "hitpoints", when they reach zero, your character is mortally wounded and while not dead yet, they're incapable of taking action, and are probably bleeding out(Endurance rapidly dropping, when that hits zero, THEN you're dead). Starting Karma: Reason, Intuition, and Psyche scores all added together. This fuels your character development and allows you to push your abilities higher. Fighting someone who completely outranks you? Spend your karma to boost your ranks and make a dramatic victory against all odds. Karma is gained by "good deeds" and of course, awarded by other players who feel your latest post in the game is awesome. Obviously this will change as the game goes by, so I'm just asking for where it starts off at.
Talents/Skills: These are things your character has trained in and knows about. They're a way of modifying the FASERIP stats under certain conditions. Your character might be an incompetent klutz who trips over their own shoelaces... but is a dead eye frisbee disc thrower. So, list "Frizbee disc throwing- Agility +20" and your Agility of 4 suddenly becomes 24 when you're trying to throw that frizbee.
Powers/Equipment: Ah, now we're getting to what makes your character truly superhuman. Powers work just like the FASERIP stats, you need go give some kind of rank or benchmark. Does your heroes power blast have the strength of a lightning bolt... or just a strong breeze? Can your heroes body armor absorb a muggers punch... or an artillery shell? List off all their powers and also any equipment they always have on their person. You don't need to list all your characters powers or gear, just their most used and understood ones.
Also, if you've added up your FASERIP and powers, and have somewhere around 275 points, you're probably doing pretty good. If you've broken 500, you might want to make your character less powerful.
Reserved for world building and character lists. To be used as a quick reference once the game gets going, so people aren't lost when they join or want to catch up on what's happening.
Triumph City has a voluntary "Power Registration and License" system in place. If you have a superpower you can register it and are given a licensing and identification card. Citizens are not forced to register, and in fact many of them don't, however once registered the super powered citizen gains a monthly stipend check, as it's assumed that they are contributing value to the city simply by being a super powered law abiding citizen. The stipend check is enough to live on(very frugally and usually with other government assistance programs). Additionally, once licensed, you can join certain super powered industries depending on your ability. A hero who generates or regulates electrical power for example could, with the right licensing, get a job providing clean energy for the city for example.
Most superheroes are not registered, and support themselves with day jobs and/or secret identities. The Son of Liberty, when he was still active, was registered but lobbied hard to make certain registration was voluntary rather than mandatory. The Triumphant have so far continued such work, as several of them are not registered.
Having a criminal record however complicates matters. If you are convicted of committing a crime through or with the aid of a power above and beyond the average citizen it goes on your arrest record, and you may suffer some minor infringement on your civil liberties during arrests as a result. The legalities of these methods are still being hotly debated at all levels.
A special international division of science and technology based heroes sanctioned by the United Nations runs a super powered prison known as the Oubliette several miles outside of Triumph City. Additionally, some private foundations have found that they can make good money offering restraints designed to stop super powers, such as the Chainsmen Institute.
"Invention" is considered a super power unto itself. Mad scientists are rather common in this world, and in this city. Their creations however only work for them, and backwards engineering them into common technologies is a difficult and time consuming task. Many large industries have been built around mad scientists, trying to make their creations into mundane science. As such, if your character uses a jetpack or ray gun, you can not simply get rich by selling your copyright on the technology, because nobody but you could reproduce it. Likewise, most magicians have to create their own spells and potions from scratch, even if they studied under a master who was able to do such things.
The Oubliette and Chainsmen Institute both have on staff numerous individuals who's only powers seem to be the nullification of other individuals abilities, either through technological or other means, most of which can not be duplicated without these individuals.
The Robotics Consortium, or BotCon, is currently the head of the cities super technology. They remain a shadow organization typically out of the public eye, but they themselves have incredibly advanced technology at their disposal and like to watch out for other super inventors in their territory. If possible, they try to offer them jobs. Rumors persist of other organizations who do likewise for magical, mutant, or alien powered citizens.
Mid Earth Labs was recently raided by the Triumphant, following a series of clues of abducted heroes, new villains, stolen medical equipment, and street metadrugs. They found that the head of the labs, Doctor Sauron, was leading research into 'stealing' certain heroes powers, including the Son of Liberty(who had a copy of his powers placed in a new villain named "Spearhead"). Spearhead himself helped to put an end to Doctor Sauron, and as such was granted a clean slate. Doctor Sauron is now serving time in the Oubliette, though it's believed a number of his files were distributed. As a result there are now a number of meta-drugs on the market that can induce 'super powers' for a limited amount of time. Often with a fatal crash at the end, or a failure to induce 'necessary secondary powers'(such as someone gaining super strong muscles... which then snap all their bones).
The Chainsmen Institute is hardly the only corporation that sells superpowers for a price. Protector Industries recently launched a line of super powered security guards for rent, having a solid contract with Pinnacle City and attempting to branch out into Triumph City as well. So far Triumph City has resisted such corporate control over it's heroes.
Adam Creyon is the mayor of Triumph City, just starting his second term. Some would say that he's tried to distance himself from the superhuman activities as much as possible politically, while upholding various pro-super acts, such as registration being purely voluntary and the mutant rights support. The Creyons spend a fair amount of time in a 'competition' with the current mayor of Pinnacle City.
Character Name: Cupid (Goes by Isolde Ansel) Costume/Appearance:tektek.org/avatar/47606602 Exact Costume img217.imageshack.us/img217/3463/cupidcoh.png Per's CoH version. Stands at a measly 4'4, and weighing 225 lbs. Profile: Cupid is the team's resident 'magical girl' sort of character. But rest assured, she isn't nearly such a mary sue as the title implies. Cupid, as she goes by to fellow superheroes, is, on one hand, a sweet, sensitive, fiercly loyal and protective, and relatively intelligent girl. On the other she's a crybaby, gluttonous (and... it shows...), has no common sense, semi-sarcastic, and can take being made fun of pretty well, though she'll act offended. She isn't all that good at... well... most things, actually, except talking and making others feel good. When the going gets tough, she... tries to be tough. The jury is out on whether or not she actually can do that, however. As for her backstory, Isolde had grown up in a small suburbia far away, with a group of friends she'd stayed with since she was little. They'd all gotten powers together, and defeated a lot... ...But then in a hilarious twist of fate, her family moved, deeming the suburbia too dangerous. Thus, Isolde now goes here. She's 16 years old. Powersource: Crystal within her- does that count as magic or...? Fighting: 5 Agility: 20 Strength: 5 Endurance: 20 Reason: 10 Intuition: 10 Psyche: 30 Resources: 5 (her allowance counts!) Charisma: 25 (She's pretty-ish, but could be a lot prettier if she were smaller. And taller.) Max Health: 50 Starting Karma: 50 Talents/Skills: Fashion and Design is something she's always had a big talent for, as well as useless sci-fi/anime/movie and food trivia. Powers/Equipment: Love(+25 to Charisma when transformed normally, +5 when in 'ribbon mode'(I have no idea what to call it- it's a sort of high-stress mode in limbo between transformed and not transformed(I'm a Sailor Moon fan and it shows)), +75 when entering a third mode (only seen when it's with the crystal, and this almost never occurs, but just in case this happens in this RP...)), tying in mostly with her Equipment: -Scepter (30 damage if direct hit) -Wing Clips (5 damage if direct hit alone, 7 in combo with scepter) -Back Ribbon (2 damage at best, mostly used for tying up) -Crystal (60 damage to person against, 20 damage to self) -Sword of Divinity (As she isn't skilled with it, can deal 20 at absolute BEST, but typically around 10)
Character Name: John James Jefferson (birth name), Warrior Hopper ('hero' name) Costume/Appearance: Stands at about 6'6. Profile: A former local baseball player turned store clerk. Also a victim of a kidnapping to turn him into a cyborg by a secret sect of Nazi remnants that was shut down before more cyborgs could be created. Because... that happens, apparently. Hot-blooded, believing in justice. Probably should go to college, but in his own words he's 'lost control of my life'. Powersource: Cybernetics Fighting: 15 Agility: 20 Strength: 12 Endurance: 12 Reason: 8 Intuition: 15 Psyche: 35 Resources: 5 Charisma: 10 Max Health: 142 Starting Karma: 71 Talents/Skills: Poetic/Theatrical thought (inner-monologues tend to either be overly dramatic or... surprisingly mundane) A Natural Cashier (Oddly good with numbers) He Probably Knows What He's Doing (semi-familiar with typical superhero tropes. ...which oddly flipflops between being useful and being a hindrance) He's Partially Made of Steel (Melee attacks will do at least +2 more damage, +5 at best) Possibly Properly Paranoid (IT'S A GOLGOM PLOT I TELL YA! He thinks everything is a possible plot by a hidden evil group) Powers/Equipment: Cybernetic. His equipment is a wooden baseball bat, his motorcycle, enhanced muscle capabilities and... a pocket of rubber bands.
Looks good, you've both pretty clearly considered your characters.
I've heard that Warrior of Light there is going to be away for a few days, so nobody minds if I don't start the IC for a bit, right? We'll let anyone else who wants to join, join, as well as giving her time to come back from her vacation.
Character Name: Creeper, hero name. Risto Wicker, real-life names.
Costume/Appearance: Fused in armor-plating. Sorta' like Iron-Man, I guess? Blue and yellow colouring, skeletal appearances. He is tattooed, head-to-toe in Celtic, biblical references and rather funny sketches on his bum.
Profile: A former convicted, escaped rapist, murderer and psychopath, he has reformed his ways in an effort to right the wrongs he did. He has a perverted, funny sense of humour, and a sense of justice that is just barely teetering into the evils.
Powersource: A powered housing unit slapped onto his back. It runs off powered energy, electricity, and if need be, kinetic energy. However, the unit is housed directly INTO him, so any sustained damage to the suit, and he is killeds. His true strength, however, is that the suit is well-rounded in alert systems, due to his insane paranoias.
(I'll note in armour, out of armour.)
Fighting: 15, in. 5. out.
Agility: 25, in. 30 out.
Strength: 15, in. 5. out.
Endurance: 25, in. 10, out.
Reason: 45.
Intuition: 45, in. (Sensors), 20, out.
Psyche: 45, in. 20 out.
Resources: 10. Everything was put into the suit.
Charisma: 20. A man with a giant suit of armour makes a dangerously compelling case in a fight.
Max Health: 80, in. 50, out.
Starting Karma: 125, in.
Talents/Skills: Parkour, running. Is rather funny and sick-minded.
Powers/Equipment: In-built armour system. Sustained damage, and he is as dead and the suit is useless.
Character Name: Johanna Farmer (birth name), the Bright Knight (hero name) Costume/Appearance:
Stands at about 5'2"; a strange-looking combination of muscular and undernourished. Weighs 135 pounds (mostly muscle). Profile: Johanna grew up as a serf on a feudal manor. When she was sixteen, she saved her master's life by hurling a rock at a poisonous snake he had angered moments before it struck at him. Johanna had taken the habit of wearing her older brother's clothes, which did a good job of disguising her femininity. The day she saved her master, she was promoted to the post of stable boy. There, she met Sir Douglass, a knight employed by her master. She fell deeply in love with him, but didn't dare show it since to reveal her gender would mean going back to the fields. She did, however, become friends with Sir Douglass, who began to secretly train her in sword fighting. She turned out to be a natural. After her chores were done one day, she snuck out to the field where horses were exercised with a makeshift sword to practice. There she was accosted by a strange man, who put her in an even stranger machine. The man, in fact, was a time traveller. He was a mad scientist from the distant future, seeking warriors from every age to experiment on. He injected Johanna with all sorts of odd and painful concoctions, and made her do strenuous workouts every day. When he had finished with her, he gave her a sword and some flashy armor that was both stronger and lighter than anything she'd seen and told her he was sending her back to her own time for observation. Either he was lying or the machine malfunctioned, though, for she landed in present-day Triumph City. Powersource: Biological enhancement Fighting: 11 with no weapon (her training was limited to the times when both she and Sir Douglass had no work, and the scientist assumed she already knew how to fight). Agility: 20 Strength: 40 Endurance: 40 Reason: 10 (Also can't read more than simple sentences (i.e. "the black cat sat on the mat."). Don't know where else to put this.) Intuition: 20 (since she was abducted, she's been attentive to the point of paranoia, but is terrible at reading people). Psyche: 15 (stubborn, but has no resistance to magic attacks) Resources: 5 (currently trying to get a job, but even after several months of living in this era, she has trouble understanding a capitalist society) Charisma: 8 Max Health:121 Starting Karma: 45 Talents/Skills: Sword fighting (+5 fighting when using sword), farming, limited horseback riding Powers/Equipment: Enhanced armor, sword (material strength=50), super strength and speed.
I hope that's all okay. I've never really done this kind of RP before so please be nice to me. But don't hesitate to correct me if I do something wrong.
While I can't really say "good" about a character that's a convicted and escaped rapist, murderer, and all, you seem to at least be coming up with something, so I'll see how things turn out. Just a few questions on the stats though...
Agility... is it supposed to go down when in the suit? Is he supposed to be olympic medalist level at climbing and leaping and throwing?
Reason of 45, that makes him super humanly smart... which I suppose would be necessary if he build the suit himself. Psyche of 45, but lowers when out of the suit... does his confidence take a hit or are there some kind of feedback monitors keeping him in control while wearing the suit?
And finally, the in-built armor... You could say that it's already factored in as his increased stats also give him increased hitpoints, it takes 40 points of damage(roughly a lightning bolt, or some high end explosives) before he personally feels anything. But, alternately, since the armor is presumably made of some thing tough, you could give it a material strength rating that is deducted from incoming damage(that isn't specifically bypassing armor, IE a psionic attack or poison gas or just somebody with superhuman aim who's shooting through the eyeslits). For example, your average police officer would wear a kevlar vest(material strength let's say at 6), providing them with 6 points of armor, so a handgun that deals 6 or less points of damage(we're talking tiny purse derringers here) doesn't injure them.
Actually Kevlar and most bullet proof materials have a higher material strength(they average around 20 so they're actually stopping real bullets, not just pocket derringers), but in making it a flexible vest you wear under your uniform it's strength is notably reduced.
And while we're actually waiting for Anya and Penny, I started the IC thread already. It's not organized or has a direction or anything yet, but if you want to start off "early" with just random slice of life moments, go for it.
Bumping cause I finally put my bio up.
|
|
|
Post by JW% on May 8, 2012 21:31:54 GMT -8
Thanks. Character looks good. For talents and skills you might want to put horse riding(I know, it's in your bio, but just to be thorough), sword fighting, and farming(her reasoning skill when asked when the right time to plant is would probably be better than your average cityfolk).
Also, is the sword "enchanted" in any way, or just made with modern/ultramodern materials? The +5 to fighting would be her skill with the sword, unless the sword "moves on it's own"(for example, a computer aided targeting system increases Ironmans fighting skill while in his suit). If the sword is normal, then what you actually want to mention here is a material strength and/or damage rating(for how sharp the edge is). Material strength assumes that the damage she deals is equal to her strength, with a bonus given because she's swinging a weapon(this applies to the baseball bat above as well), and if the damage she inflicts is greater than the material strength of the weapon she's using, the weapon has a chance of shattering.
I don't think the sword would be an issue, but if she happened to steal Warrior Hoppers baseball bat, with her augmented strength, she could break it with a good solid swing. Wood is usually somewhere between 6 and 15, while steel between 30 and 50 depending on the quality. Iron(considering her tech level she probably expects stuff to be made of iron or bronze) is around 20.
These sorts of calculations also go into when you want to have your hero smash through a wall or something. So, yes, if the blades edge has a damage of 50, the sword can slice through the blade of another sword. Just say'n...
No, I didn't expect any of you to know that stuff.
Anyway, how do we want to start this off? Some kind of evil doing that needs to be stopped where everyone meets, or they're just hanging out at an all night diner where superheroes are welcome, or everyone is off on patrol or what?
The general idea was that, despite the suit being formed around him, It's still armour. It'll still impair him physically in-turms of endurance and agility.
And I was thinking sensors and the like, increasing his psyche(s) and shit.
And I'd rather armour be more about sustained damage, per say. I don't want him ridicuously over-powereds.
|
|
|
Post by JW% on May 9, 2012 23:56:59 GMT -8
It seems to enhance his endurance. And if it's powered armor, that's understandable, the suits muscles do the work for him so he doesn't tire as easily. Only agility is decreased, and since his "out of armor" agility was verging on the superhuman(or depending on how you consider Olympic medalists, IS superhuman), I was just wondering if the numbers were reversed or some other typo was in the mix.
I don't really see how a sensor suite would enhance your willpower, but I could see how some kind of systems could be installed, so that's fine. Your guy is smart, I'm sure he could figure out some sort of countermeasures and put them in.
"Sustained damage"... not quite sure what you mean by that(dealing it, or taking it?). But as he is now, he's not over powered by the guidlines I mentioned in the first post. He's pretty much in line with what I was looking for in fact.
Anyway, starting any time now... do you guys want a more organized intro, or just want your characters doing their thing on their own to start off?
Hmm.
How about we go with the whole 'powered' idea. And I was sorta' thinking that since he is an escaped convict, he'd be good at running for long periods of time. And he's also good at parkour, so I thought maybe I could add that on-tops.
|
|
|
Post by JW% on May 10, 2012 18:26:59 GMT -8
Yeah, with the Parkour skill, it adds a bonus for his running. Endurance is the stat used for long distance runs, Strength would be for short sprints(which he doesn't do so well at apparently) and Agility for avoiding obstacles(which he's very good at). Very good for running down villains who don't have the skills he does.
I'm going to assume that his armor doesn't have any built in weapons or something, since you don't mention them.
No, the sword and armor are just really strong material, which was what I meant by "enhanced." The extra Fighting is because she has specific training in swordplay. So, I guess the material strength of the sword would be around fifty? Should I put that under powers/equipment? Pardon my confusion.
|
|
|
Post by JW% on May 10, 2012 22:46:37 GMT -8
The skill in fighting is under talents/skills, which I see you've already filled in.
As for the material strength, yeah it goes under Powers/Equipment. Usually each power or gadget is listed individually, including what tricks can be done with it, limitations, and that sort of thing. Melee weapons usually have their material strength listed, as well as any addition things they have(an edge sharper than they are hard, or perhaps acts as a focal point for summoning lightning, or always returns to the hand when thrown).
That could get a bit complex though, particularly for a gadget or power heavy character like Cupid up there, so keeping things streamlined helps out. It's not like I'm going to call for dice rolls unless they're needed, so most of the time you can gloss over "he drives a motorcycle" without needing to know it's top speed, or how tight it's breaks are, or how strong the front end is. Unless that's going to come up, in which case I'll have to make a call on it. Filling these things out ahead of time would save us from a potential disagreement in the future, but at some point(and I think we've reached that point unless we have more players joining), it's time to just start playing the game. We already have a few posts, so who thinks their character would be starting the evening at a nice greasy spoon diner?
Character Name: Aeon Phoenix/Edmond Radcliffe Costume/Appearance: www.tektek.org/avatar/49256271Profile: An orphan who's parents died in a car crash. I would question an intuition of 45 being "natural" since that is the kind of 'intune with the cosmos' you normally see in precogs... also, you intend on playing two characters?
Oh. XD That was completely unintentional, just so you know. I didn't even know a thread like this existed until this one was made.
Eh, I didn't use the character for this. Were you on TSv2? I used her a bajillion times in different RPs there (the two biggest being Twipocalypse and Jabberwocky School).
Oh, I have plots if that's what we're worried about, but it was suggested I don't railroad people into them like with previous incarnations of this game. So that you don't have to worry about.
Though the only thing I'm pointing out is that level of intuition is superhuman, and you list the source of his powers as being "a normal natural person". He pretty clearly isn't(since he's a superhero and a player character), and if you want him to be more normal, you might want to tone him down, but I suggest instead that you change from "normal" to somehow explaining how he can be better than an Olympic Medalist fencer(he's Olympic level at all melee fighting, and even better with a sword) and able to detect peoples intentions and spot details that make it seem like he's in his own CSI episode.
Also... I was wondering if you're going to actually play two different characters, which I'm fine with, or if you preferred one over the other and wanted to drop the first in favor of this second. Considering that you haven't posted anything with your first hero...
Al said yes, he is playing two characters, Per. Go lay down, you're overheating.
