I want to weep for every person who could have been published instead of that.

I think I've fallen in love with the two people in those videos. Such different styles and yet both oh so wonderful. <3
But seriously, what the fuck? "Pearls"? You serious? Pearl . . . Uh, no. No. No no no no no. No. For one, if you wanted a derogatory term, "bone" or "ghost" would be more appropriate, and "obsidian" or "ebony" would be better as complimentary terms. Two, there ARE white people who don't burn no matter what (they may even tan a little). It's . . . no, I can't say any more . . . It's just . . . no . . .

I've been wondering when a thread would be put up ever since Melina Pendulum did her review.
How the flying fuck did Foyt think even for a SECOND that putting her main white character in blackface would NOT be horrifically offensive and racist? Was her brain on at ALL when she was writing her "book"? And really? The ruling class call themselves "coals" and the lower class "pearls"? What the fuck. She obviously has no idea how the hell racism or classism or PEOPLE work. How did she think that ANY of her book was a good idea?
Look, vanity publishers. Look at what you have unleashed onto the world! Behold your abomination! *headdesks until the pain stops*

She...she honestly believes that there is no community of African American or any other black readers. I...I just...*headdesks THROUGH desk* If you all will excuse me, I'm off to start a colony on Mars where only those with at LEAST half a braincell are allowed to come and live. Come with me, and we shall create a utopia free of bullshit like this abomination of a book or Twilight or any of the other idiotic dribblings that are being marketed towards young adults. Imagine it, TS! Imagine it with your mind!

There have been many blips of protest about the racism in your book. How have you avoided noticing it?
I think she means that african-americans aren't considered a group in their own but are defined rather by age or gender, for example, rather than black people don't read. Still, it's a ridiculously naive thing to say. Of course there's a community of african american readers since african americans exist in this world and have the ability to read.
So you were feeling shameful that someone would compare you to a black person? That speaks volumes.
Really? Because many comments you've made up to now in this article suggest that, yeah, you kinda do.
Given your premise of black people being magically unhurt by the sun is based on absolutely no kind of scientific fact then I don't see how that will happen. Also, it still implies that we shold just fear the black man taking over.
Is this getting dangerously close to the whole, 'black men are animalistic and can't control themselves," stereotype?
If you don't like my book it's because you're not open-minded enough. Lol, your fault.

I dunno, ma'am, I've been seeing some protest for your story.
...maybe I'm being really picky, but something about this bugs me. The fact that the light-skinned lady is the "Beauty" and the dark-skinned man is the "Beast" seems racist to me--and I'm not that old.
WHAT.
I guess on one hand, it's the fact that someone called her something she's not that hurt the author. On the other hand, she did take African American assets in a negative light...

Has Ursula Le Guin made a rant about this? I'd love to see her tear this author a new one.

This is some of the most offensive bullshit EVER. You can't just take racism and turn it into an "adventure" for a white person. Also, yeah, white protagonist, non-white villains. Wow, good job, way to turn the tables on racism. Honestly, what the hell.
And look at this!
This is an official video. And yes, that's a young woman in blackface. I just... I can't. Everything about this just scream no no no no no no NO.
Also, I just love how on Amazon, the description of the book is like fucking 10 word pages long, containing the few positive reviews there are AND an interview with the author, so that you stop scrolling before reaching all the negative customer reviews.
EDIT.
OH FUCKING SHIT. I hadn't even watched the video because I thought it spoke for itself. Now I watched it and... "If you're a pearl, why not join me? ... Let's help future generations of pearls."
I am not kidding, I fell off my chair. How can this thing possibly exist.
Also, does this video basically happen "in-universe"? Because if it's supposed to address the readers... good fucking god.

This may be a stupid question, but what does a "mate-rate of 15%" means? Is it the fertility of a person? The percentage of people willing to be with said person? Or the percentage of genes considered "desirable"?

Or the percentage of genes considered "desirable"? I think it's the last one. But honestly, everything about this book is confusing. I've read recaps of the first few chapters, and nothing at all makes sense. An example: They have a strict one-child policy... but everybody has to mate or they die. What?

Wow... Just Wow! This is a slap in the face to everyone who is not a "Pearl" or white and not just African Americans.
Even though she doesn't say who the Beauty and who the Beast is, it's obvious that Bramford is the "Beast" and Eden is the "Beauty"
Also,
It still does, it doesn't matter how many years ago it has passed, there will always be heated arguments like there is now!
Has she not checked out YouTube, Facebook, Twitter or any other social network or anywhere that book reviews are posted? She is delusional!
Conceivably, if the book had not reached the African-American community of readers, if such a category still exists, perhaps there might be some backlash.[/quote]
Okay, this is confusing. Is she saying that African Americans don't exist? That we're all equal? Or is she saying that they can't read?
Uh, lady, you wrote the book and most likely failed history, so clearly you are naive.
"One day may turn around the status quo," there! That's implying that she's racist! She thinks that white people are at the top and everyone else at the bottom and that should never change! I mean seriously! If that doesn't imply racism then what does?!
Overall this article is simply a load of bull shit! She's saying one thing and then she contradicts herself! Why doesn't she just come out and tell the truth? In all honesty, I think we have another, delusional, Stephenie Meyer in our hands. And if this series gets turned into a movie, then all hope is lost.
P.S.: Sorry for the fuming and overanalyzing, but come on! As a society, we're supposed to be moving forward not backwards!

Wow. This story has already been done. Better. Twice. Once in "Farnham's Freehold" and in "Children of the Dust." Both were post-apocalyptic tales, one a thousand years after "the bomb" and one immediately after and several years after the event. The one several years after actually featured a race of humans with long white body hair to adapt to the nuclear winter.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the second in this awful series is due out in January 2013. Luckily the hardcover is apparently only 110 pages long. Damn, that's short.
Adapting Eden (Save the Pearls#2) In the sequel to the award-winning, dystopian novel, Revealing Eden, Eden Newman must adapt into a hybrid human beast if she hopes to become Ronson Bramford’s mate. She has no choice but to undergo her father’s adaptation experiment at his makeshift laboratory in the last patch of rainforest. But when the past rears its ugly head, Eden and Bramford must abandon camp along with their family and friends. Luckily, an Aztec tribe that has survived with the aid of a healing plant provides them with sanctuary—or is it? Too late, Eden realizes she is at the center of an epic spiritual battle between love and war. To survive, she must face her deepest fears or lose everything, including the beastly man she loves.
So she's going to change her actual species (sort of?) to mate with a man? Kind of reminds me of Twilight. Wonder how the Aztecs will be treated in this thing. I'm particularly curious given the fact their civilisation died out centuries ago.

How can the writer not see the unfortunate implications in this story? It would be just as bad if it were reversed which race was in which role, too.
That "beauty and beast couple" thing in that one article isn't helping, since I'm assuming the man in the relationship is the "beast."
Why "pearls" and "coals," for that matter? Pearl isn't very derogatory at all, and coal isn't particularly flattering. Wouldn't it make more sense to have something like "pales" and "ebonies?"
Wait, so according to the sequel... Are the darker race supposed to be another species? Ooh, boy, this isn't going to be pretty...
