The Silver Guild of Hemoluna
Long ago, the age of mankind came to a close. No one can remember exactly how it happened, but one day the great cities and civilizations of humans disappeared and human beings lost their place as the dominant species of Earth. The creatures that took their places, were the monsters of their nightmares, previously thought to be only myths. Much like the apocalypse, no one knows where they came from, they just appeared from the shadows, and wrestled what was left of civilization away from the humans, driving them out into the wilderness. When that was done, the monsters started building society from scratch.
Our story takes place one thousand years later, in the great city of Hemoluna, populated by two of the most prominent monsters in human tales: vampires and werewolves. Hemoluna had discovered steam power within the past few decades, and is in a state similar to the Victorian Era. Factories are booming, and industry is quite well. Unfortunately with all of this advancement, comes social turmoil, as the divides between the classes of Hemoluna become bigger and bigger.
There are two types of vampires in Hemoluna, Noble and Common. The Noble Vampires, are the ruling class who live in the Noble Wards of Hemoluna. They have most of the wealth in the city, and are in charge of government and financial matters. Noble vampires can live to be 1,000 years old, but the magic force inside their bodies that allow this have one weakness: the sun. They can only be awake during the night, or they will die. This might seem like a weakness, but it is compensated by the fact that during the night, the Noble Vampire is unmatched by any monster. Noble Vampires are the only vampires that can afford to eat the delicacy known as “humans” living wild in the forests surrounding Hemoluna. The leader of Hemoluna, a monarch only known as “The Queen” is a Noble Vampire, who because of her daytime reclusiveness, is a very unknown and elusive figure to the commoners.
The second type of vampire is the Common Vampire. They only live to be 120 years old, but they can be awake during the daylight hours, and suffer no ill effects. Common Vampires are the main workforce of Hemoluna, usually becoming merchants, farmers, and now factory workers. They are what would be considered the “middle class” of Hemoluna, though they have been having a much harder time feeding themselves because of increased taxes and a lower rate of farming, because of the industrial boom. Common Vampires are not allowed by law to drink the blood of humans, and they are forced to survive on the blood of animals.
But the worst conditions of all belong to the werewolves, who live in the poorest slums of Hemoluna. They are stereotyped as “savages” and “beasts” by the vampires, and it is almost impossible for them to find decent employment, forcing them to do jobs that no one would want, such as being house servants, miners and the very dangerous jobs in the factory, that often result in amputated limbs and other life changing injuries.
Werewolves are indistinguishable from humans at least on the outside. They have a different scent then humans, that make them unappealing to vampires. They have the shortest life span of all the residents of Hemoluna, only living to be about 70. Werewolves have the ability to change into a wolf at any time, but doing so is a felony in Hemoluna, one that can result in long imprisonment or even execution depending on the actions during the transformation. This applies to all werewolves even the children who have a hard time controlling their transformations because of their age. Werewolves also have an involuntary transformation every full moon, which is their most powerful state. Werewolves have a curfew during the full moon, and anyone who violates it is instantly put to death.
So is life right now in Hemoluna. The rich keep on getting richer and the poor keep on getting poorer. Some take it sitting down, realizing there is no use fighting something as powerful as a Noble Vampire. But others want justice and are willing to risk their lives to deliver it.
This is the Silver Guild, the bane of the Hemoluna law enforcement, entirely compromised of Common Vampires and Werewolves. They are Robin Hood like figures, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, and in general just being a nuisance to the Nobles. Their ultimate goal is to overthrow the Queen’s rule all together, but they are far from that goal. But they are content with just helping the lives of those who need it, at the moment.
All of that is about to change. During the Silver Guild’s exploits, they will find out many secrets, about the Nobles themselves, about their human precursors, about the other monsters that live beyond Hemoluna’s borders, and about the apocalypse that started it all. And these secrets are the key to Hemoluna’s future and much more.
