"I-It's alright, Lyra." Benjamin said, grasping the girl as she got close to Tik-Tok. He looked over the robot, the intelligent machine. "H-He looks dented."
Benjamin came up to Tik-Tok, pressing a hand into one of the multiple dents of Tik-Tok's frame. He traced a fist-sized dent in his brass plating.
"Who did this to you?" He asked.
He kept a hand on Tik-Tok until the man in the distance came into view, eyeballing the man and squinting through the heat gaze.
"... that's probably not someone coming to help us." Benjamin muttered suspiciously.

Ryan looked over to Tik Tok with an exasperated sigh.
"Check his back," he said, "I'm starting to think he might actually be BASED on the design from the book... if so, he should have wind-up keys on his back."
He looked to where everyone else was looking then.
"...Whatever it is, it doesn't look... right, I guess?"

On the back of the robot was one wind up key. There were places for the other two, but one of them had been snapped off, and the other had been dented, the key also broken off.
"I... think I could use another drink." Brian rasped out, his throat hurting like he'd been screaming all day. In fact making his strangled noises was in a way even worse. "I'll get it myself... I already owe Ben one of my bottles..." He started making his way towards where he left his water and cookies.

"Thanks," Benjamin said as Brian walked away, his hand idly clasped at Tik-Tok's side. "For calling me Benjamin."
He looked down, and at the back of Tik-Tok as they were made aware of the presence of the machinations of the intelligent machine.
"I-... I think he is wind up." Benjamin remarked intelligently.

Ryan bit his lip, glancing over at Brian before looking up to Ben.
"Uh... try to wind it a little, and see if that works?"

"Come here." Benjamin said, leaning over Tik-Tok and sighing, placing his hand on one of the keys in a firm grip, looking up. "One of them looks broken off... so... just help me over here."

Ryan nodded, standing back up and going over.
"Alright, so there's one key still in place... and two broken off. Alright... let's... wind the not-broken one first..."
He took hold of the key, and, as gently as he could muster, turned it.

The key seemed to be stuck. With just gentle strength, it didn't budge. It was also possible these keys were entirely cosmetic and didn't link to anything, thus, weren't meant to be turned. Either that, or that particular key was already tight, and it was one of the others that needed winding. Tiktok rotated his head around to look at Ryan, turning just a bit further than humanly possible, but the neck started grinding before it could look directly at him. "Please do not further damage this body." He repeated.
Brian had made it over to his snack box and drained another bottle, happy he had managed to get the whole thing open without breaking. Biscuit cookies came next, then another bottle. He was starting to feel hungry and thirsty again, but then his body felt like it had been completely drained. Then again, he was surprised that he wasn't hurting anymore. His skin wasn't at least. His muscles were still hurting.
And, of course, the figure in the distance was coming closer. He was at this point identifiable as adult male. It also seemed to be wearing tatters that fluttered in the winds across the salt flats.

Benjamin placed a gentle palm on the robot's cranium, patting him gently and with polite intentions, trying not to damage his brass frame in any way, shape or form. He gently continued to pat the intelligent robot.
Patting the intelligent robot, he began to attempt to wind up one of the other keys.

Ryan's cheeks flared up again, and he quickly looked away.
"I-I'm sorry... I thought... I thought you might need to be wound up a little..." He apologized somewhat profusely. "L-like in the story... because you were... you were quiet... it scared us."

"I-I think it best we just give this machine a moment then." Benjamin said, stepping back and turning to squat down to his box and pick up a water bottle. He took a few sips. Grape, his favorite.
He took the moment of reprieve from the enduring pain and ate, breaking open chocolate chip cookies, chowing down on them with a ferocity warrant of food he had never had before, nor had enough of to seek his fill.
Sitting, he looked up at the approaching figure and the heat gauze he attempted to squint through. He sighed, and poured a bit of water over himself, if anything just to clear himself of the stench of blood around his face, now that he has the knowledge that they were not going to be left here.
"Do we rush to meet the man?" Benjamin asked the others, wanting the group's knowledge and opinion. "He doesn't look in health. I think we should go help him."

Ryan looked forward, to where Ben was pointing, and his brow furrowed.
"...I think so. Come on, let's see if we can help him."
And with that, Ryan took off towards the man.

"H-Hey," Benjamin said, as the man tore away at breakneck speed for someone barely on foot, let alone wounded like they were in their current state.
He looked at his own feet, and took a deep breath, before he bolted and began to chase after the man towards the distant figure.
He stopped, a few spaces away from the man in the heat gauze. He waved, and yelled.
"Hey!" He asked. "Are you alright!?"

Ryan was back on his feet shortly after collapsing. Zephyrine was glad to see him back so quickly, dealing with an injured person AND a depressed person was not preferable. Especially when Tik-Tok had a breakdown later, because dealing with an injured person, a depressed person AND a malfunctioning robot? Forget about it.
Fortunately, the robot was back online within minutes. While others were expressing concern about another figure approaching across the flats, Z concerned herself with going back and getting something to eat and drink again. Having awoken last, she was still sore, hungry and thirsty but put those aside to asses the situation better.
Back at her pod, she helped herself to her snack supplies. More of the, she remembered the name was BLACK Cherry now, water. She dug around for something to eat, pulling out what looked like a thick, blocky, shortbread gold foil wrapped biscuit. She bit into the crumbly cookie and was quite pleased with it. Not the BEST thing she'd ever eaten...but it was the first thing that tasted remotely of chocolate that she'd had in sometime. That helped a lot.
Ben and Ryan had taken off to help the figure that had been approaching them. Zeph had, a bit selfishly, decided to stay back and eat. She figured they could handle the situation without a sore hungry girl's "help".

Tik-tok was left sitting there in the sand, his gears still grinding away, though his head did rotate to track others. "Please do not harm this body." He repeated again, even though nobody was around, as though having flashbacks of whoever had beaten him and broken all but one of his keys off.
Brian looked up at the two as they ran off towards the mirage. He took one more long drink, enjoying his white grape flavored water, before taking off after them. The fact that, now suited, he seemed to be wearing at least sorta boots... more like swim shoes really... helped him a little in with the running.
As Ryan came closer to the man, because it certainly looked like a man at this distance, he saw that the poor guy was almost as badly burnt up as they were. In fact, this man seemed to have been wearing some kind of clothing when he had walked through a fire, or perhaps had been lit on fire. Some of the blue outfit had melted against him, while the pantsleg was in tatters hanging off.
Coming even closer Ryan, and now Ben as well, could see that the man had a few bulky contraptions attached to him. Like some sort of pacemaker, or perhaps a heart monitor attached to his chest, but it was scorched and hard to make out, unlike the gunmetal silver visible in one of his arms as a medical prosthetic.
The man gazed at them with a look that was part dead, and part hungry. Then made a breathy sound, clearly intended to be some kind of roar, but came only as a low wavering moan. The smell reached Ryan and Ben and made them gag. It was like meat rotting for days had just breathed on them.
At about this point, the gear works that had locked up in Tik-tok suddenly made a snapping sound, and he moved to stand up. "Run! Children! Run! Back inside! Now!" He shouted, louder than he had spoken before, though his distance from anyone at the moment might make it still hard to hear him. "Back inside!"
Brian caught up to them just as the zombie started to go into spasms. A moment later globs of black, reeking, material flew at the three of them, spat up from the zombies throat. Brian shoved both Ben and Ryan down, out of the path of the tar like expectorate. It still hit the ground and splattered them a little however. Despite Brian's fears, all it seemed to do was smell really bad.
Though from the zombies expression, it was meant to do more than that. As though they were supposed to be helpless, retching or otherwise sickened by the mass of bodily discharge. It added confused, and angry, to the cavalcade of expressions on it's burnt, and possibly stitched back together, face.
"Guys, maybe we should get away..." Brian suggested.

Ryan was mentally blindsided by the stench of the man, a hand flying to his face as he attempted not to choke. He had barely recovered from this- hearing Tik-Tok shouting at them- when Brian shoved him down, and the man spat, and it splattered against the three of them. He grimaced- he didn't quite feel it, but it felt, looked, smelled, and all such things absolutely disgusting.
He nodded to Brian, moving to get to his feet and pull them along with him.

Benjamin squinted, continuing to peer throughout the heat gauze as a distant sound echoed and hit his ears, but barely registered as Benjamin's eyes picked up on the man finally as he escaped the blurry mirage at the end of the desert.
He was... something different. Blue tatters, more machine than man. Benjamin felt like retching, but maintained his composure.
"H-Hey," Benjamin said, going into a small bound as he attempted to get closer to the man. He only had a moment to register the impact of Brian, and the caustic black vomit that covered Brian. He went to scream out, before he registered the fact that the man was alright.
He stood up, and attempted to lift Ryan, but the man was already up before Benjamin had even rolled over. He looked at Lyra and the others, and backed up, but kept an eye on the thing.
"W-What the fuck is that!?" He yelled, backing up as to make sure it made no more attempts on them.

A commotion erupted while Zeph was busy taking a drink of her water. Quickly, she set the bottle down and stood back up to see what the hell was happening. Squinting to see the through the heat and over the distance, she saw the figure that had been coming toward them...and Ryan, Brian and Ben on the ground in front of it. Tik Tok was freaking out...the ROBOT was freaking out. That was not a good sign.
Z rushed from her pod and towards the downed boys and the figure. As she approached, she quickly realized that this was no normal man. He wasn't even alive! She remembered hearing stories about the undead....but she'd dismissed those as rumors or the ravings of those in an altered state of mind. Well, now she had a certain answer. And it was attacking her...friends? Let's just call them that.
Trying to ignore the awful sight...and stench of the zombie, Zephyrine reached down to help Brian up. Ben was already helping Ryan out and the last thing Brian needed after having his almost seizure earlier was an encounter with the undead.
"Forget what it is," she said to Ben. "Let's just get the hell away from it!"

Brian was helped up and gave Z a good shove to get moving. Not enough to knock her down, but enough to get running, since they were, demonstrateably within spitting distance of the zombie.
"This thing looks like it climbed it's way out of the burn pits..." Brian said, trying to take up the rear of the formation and get everyone away. "That means that black stuff is like... plague concentrate. Shouldn't we be... I don't know, suffering cellular breakdown or whatever?" He dredged the term from what he knew about the plague, which admitted wasn't much. Instead, though disgusting, the glob of vomit just sort of stank really badly.
Brian paused as they started to run away from the zombie, and turned back to look at it. Only to be surprised by how fast it could move. He managed to see a glint of metal... how much of the corpse had been replaced? Was the only thing keeping it moving it's cybernetics? Who had that kind of medical technology? ...on the monsters fingertips. Claws. Rather sharp ones too as it lunged forward and caught Brian across the chest with a good hard strike.
A blast of sparks came from the creatures claws and Brian was thrown backwards, landing on his rear, and crabwalked to get further away. Then he looked down at his chest. And laughed. Of everything he'd gone through so far today, that has actually not hurt. It had surprised him, it but it hadn't hurt. His clothing wasn't even scratched.
"It can't hurt us!" Brian declared. "We're immune to the plague, and even it's claws can't get through my suit!"
Brian climbed back to his feet still laughing, only to remember that he was the only one who had summoned the suit so far. And how very very painful it had been the first time. "Okay, so maybe you guys still should run. The entrance back into the mountain should be that way." He pointed to where Tiktok had come out of. And where Tiktok was shouting for them to go, gesturing with his one good brass arm. "I'll watch you guys backs."
Brian dropped into what he hoped was some sort of martial arts pose, and waited for the zombie to catch up with him. He threw a kick to it's shins and the monster stumbled. His next kick to the stomach, even as it's claws came down and burst sparks from his arm that he tried to block with. He was holding his own.
Right up until he tried to grab the things pace maker. The zombie responded by grabbing his own arm, getting the boy in a body lock. Held in place, Brian couldn't avoid it when the claws came, this time at his face.
Brian screamed as the rotting fingers and sharp metal bone replacements drove into his eyes after opening up his forehead. Blood sprayed from his face as the zombie tried to claw, and chew, off the boys only unprotected spot... his face.

Ryan had started running with the others, before he heard Brian scream. He wheeled around just in time... to see blood spraying. He felt weak in the knees then, and his face gained a look of horror. He ran halfway back, and then looked down at himself.
Now this was a nauseating proposition: change and suffer for... probably several moments, and run to help his friend, or run back with no protection and try to save him then?
Well, he guessed he'd have to take a risk. What was it that Brian had shou- oh, something was coming to him!
He took a deep breath, braced himself for the worst, and shouted, "Guardians of the Brink: Burning Red Flame!"
On the outside, there was a miniature explosion of flame that consumed his body, and then died down, leaving only red spandex and armor as all his breath dissipated. On the inside, he was in the most pain of his life- which he didn't think possible after being in the salt flats, but he was beginning to realize he should never doubt anything again. He felt like he might throw up, and for a few seconds after transformation, was stunned.
Then he remembered, through the splitting headache, that Brian was in trouble, and that he needed help. Taking in another deep breath, he rushed over, and kept one covered hand over his face for protection, and grabbed Brian's arm, trying to kick the beast away and run with his teammate.
He wasn't sure he was going to be able to try much past this, or if he even wanted to. He hadn't planned much further into this than 'GRAB WHITE AND RUN'.

Benjamin carried himself quickly, running away and allowing Brian to take the rear past him as he turned and ran full throttle away from the rampaging zombie, which had now begun to gain speed.
He was scared, that was much. Incredibly scared. He had hunted before in his life, and been attacked by savage animals, but this was as far as the event went. Something about the rising corpse of a man chasing after them had a major psychological factor compared to a starving bear or a pack of wolves.
He kept going, and turned back to see White winning the fight. He smiled, and turned around to face the man. It was when it began to dive in and ravage the boy, that Benjamin turned back around.
"White!" He yelled, and ran full-sprint at the zombie with the intention of impact. He lifted up his foot, just before he impacted within the creature, and attempted to boot it in the skull. "Fuck you!"

((EDITING: Missed corte's post))
Brian's world was blind red pain. He couldn't see. His face was covered in blood, and the pain was mind numbing.
Ryan's world wasn't much less painful, his felt his pulse pounding in his body like a knife bladed jackhammer trying to escape, and his skin felt like it had been bathed in acid. He would probably have been surprised to learn that he hadn't felt anything close to what Brian had felt, but relieved to hear the next to transform would probably be even better adapted. Another twelve hours and the most they'd feel is a tingling sensation when they triggered this, the first part, of their transformation.
They needed a few more piece of armor however for it to be fully protective. A helmet would have helped greatly.
Ryan managed to pull Brian away, and the kick to the zombies leg, coupled with Brians own kicks there, caused something metallic to pop. The zombie started to chase them, dragging it's leg in an awkward shuffling gait. Ben's impact on it knocked it down as well, but the creature started to pull itself back up, claws coming after Ben, who was not suited. A glancing blow hit Ben's leg, opening a scratch... but then with all the scabs it was hard to notice save for the fresh blood spilling on the white ground.
Brian wasn't all that much help for the three of them getting away. His running was more like flailing, and blinded as he was he was stumbling over just about ever little shift in the mostly flat lake bed. He pretty clearly needed Ryan, and was wailing, trying to sob, and leaving a blood trail on the dirt as his face bled profusely. Between the three of them, Ryan was the only one not leaving a trail of red splatters.
"Run! Children! Run!" Tiktok said, marching towards the zombie as fast as the robot could. There was a loud clanging sound as his brass boiler plate body transformed, splitting open, something flipping out of his chest area. It was some kind of old fashioned gatling gun, cranking up. "Run!" And then the gun started with a cracking buzzing noise as it started off full auto firepower on the zombie. Slowing it, but not stopping it.
The door to the command center was open, like it had been for their parents to drive in, waiting for the children to retreat inside, and then close to keep them safe.

Benjamin turned on his heels to face towards the previous advance, and retreat towards the safety of the group and the large, intellectual automaton that had guarded them so far.
He felt the blade shred his feet, and staggered, but kept up with the majority of the group, wincing and sobbing a bit as the blades cut deep.
He kept running, keeping up with Ryan and Brian, giving him a hand in lifting the man to safety as he tread on blood stained sole to run towards the safety of the group.
"Go! Go! Go!" He yelled, and once they were past the firing range, he yelled at Tik-Tok. "Keep shooting!"
"What the fuck is that thing!?" He said, helping to set Brian down. "It took some major fucking damage and is still getting up!"
He kept walking, and grabbed his food supply box, and ran into the relative safety of the command center, wincing and sobbing.

Lyra ran as fast as she could to stay inside. She hadn't gotten as close as the boys had, and had heeded Tik Tok's warnings.
She tried her hardest to ignore the blood gushing out of Brian's wound, but her fears made her unable to... One look at Brian's face as the boys helped him, and she retched up the sole cookie s since she had eaten waking up

Ryan was immensely grateful when Ben came to help. He wrapped one arm around Brian, tossing the older boy's arm over his shoulder, and started running as fast as he could with him there. He would have tried to have helped Ben as well, but right now he was in flight mode and Ben... wasn't quite on the same level of it, being injured.
"I-I'm starting to think i-it's undead..." He choked out in reply to Ben as the trio rushed forward.
When they finally got into the command center, he was finding it all he could do not to set Brian down by this time. He looked around the room desperately, until his eyes caught Tik Tok.
"Tik Tok!" He cried, "Is there an infirmary, or-or even maybe just... I-I don't know..."
And there was coming that second blindside, along with a nosebleed (he chronically had them, though they were luckily always small- this was more of an inconvenience than anything). If he was going to do anything, he'd need something to keep his mind in check until after he'd fixed Brian- and Ben, by the looks of it. Even a book with some instructions could have helped by this point.

As the children all ran back into the air lock door, which wasn't working as an airlock right now as both were wide open for them, the voice of Oz could be heard through the intercoms.
"Mister Stark, please assist the wounded. Follow the red lit corridors, I will be waiting for you in the infirmary." The hallways seemed to be lit from strips in the corners, and one of them shifted from white to red, leading the way. At some point while dragging him along, though Brian was trying to help in a blind half dead sort of way, Brians entire outfit had turned to powder and fallen off. He was completely naked now, every part of his body revealed as being halfway recovered from what looked to be a sunburn that had caused horrible scabs. Proof that you should be careful if you're going to sunbathe nude.
Tik-tok was still slow moving as before, and it didn't help that he was battling the cyborg corpse. Scratches in his armor showed shiny rather than dusty, and gobs of that black stuff had stuck to him. Of course, he still had his gun, and the zombie was looking noticeably less like a human, and more like a deconstructed metal skeleton, wrapped in a corpse, with parts missing. The doors closed on that particular battle scene, locking both of them outside.
"The rest, please follow the yellow lights." The disembodied voice of Oz stated. "This will take you to the recreational room, where you can distract yourself until I am able to give you my proper attention. Please do not damage anything while you are there, as it is difficult for me to repair."
Despite the red lights leading to it, the base infirmary was as well lit as outside in bright white lights. This, and a few other points such as the theater above and the tiled floor that led to drains, made the room look somewhat like an operating room. The equipment inside however, seemed more on par with some mad scientists lab. Which, given everything, seemed to fit. Nearly everything seemed to have automated arms attached to it, even the little tape on bio sensors were attached to spindly mechanical arms. The operating table itself looked more like a hardened bed, and was clearly much too low to the ground, though hydraulics could be seen for how it could be raised, rotated, and positioned in various ways to aid surgery. The walls had numerous tubes, and the theater above was marred by a single tube that dropped down from the ceiling and ended like a curved capsule in the middle of the room. Oz apparently liked to have multiple vantage points when he was working on something this delicate.
All the rest of the furnishings looked to be automated as well, with motorized wheels attached to the base, meaning even the tables would be where they should be. Trays of everything from scalpels to rolls of bandages were available, with what looked like dispensers for more attached to them. There was even what looked like a sink, attached to a huge piece of machinery with tanks and tubes and pressurizers. About half of the things in the room Ryan could identify as modified medical equipment. The other half, things with spheres and prongs that were just now lighting up with electrical arcs, he wasn't as sure about.
In almost the exact opposite of that, the recreational room was mood lit. It didn't seem to be pools of light floating in a vast black void, like the primary command room, but the walls of warm wood paneling were not well lit. Most of the light focused through the massive aquarium, minus the fish, that dominated the far wall, with lights also for the kitchenette, the table games(it currently was set up as foosball, but the pieces were damaged and good luck finding the ball. Other configurations included pool, air hockey, and pingpong). The final corner of the room had two 'all in one' gym equipment, and comfortable chairs and a couch looking at a black rectangle on the wall. Presumably it was a television, with a warm carpet covering the floor here and not elsewhere.
The room was also not a dead end, with additional doors that, when someone bothered to investigate them, led to a bunk room(suitable for eight, though without anything but bare mattresses on the bunks), restroom, and showers. In the bunk room changes of clothing were laid out, in color coding to match the cylinders, meaning there were more uniforms, that looked sorta like park ranger attire, than children all of it too big.
The television was not working, the kitchenette was not stocked save for canned goods and pile of MREs in the back of one of the cabinets. However, the face of Oz appeared on the far side of the aquarium. "If I may direct your attention here," He said as they entered the room, "This feature at least is still working. Place your hand on the plasma globes," There were eight spheres with little electrical arcs dancing in them, "And you may operate an aquatic toy. I hope to repair the other features soon, but for now I must see to Mister Jones' injuries."
And with that, he faded from the aquarium and appeared in the infirmary. It left the children present to choose their favorite toy of an aquatic creature themed after the orca, narwhal, manta ray, squid, lobster, coelacanth, crab and turtle. Of course, that's themed after, the actual toy resting in the aquarium looked like robotic versions of the creatures and tended to add legs and even arms to the creatures, turning them all into strange amphibious monsters rather than the strictly water locked creature.
Controls were strangely intuitive, reacting to not even a direct touch so long as the energy could focus on the hand outside the sphere, with some practice moving the remote controlled toys quite easily, though the plasma globes did build up a static charge easily, and sometimes would give the user a tiny shock.

When Lyra entered the rec room, she immedietly layed down on one of the comfy couches and curled herself up. So nice and soft...
When she heard Oz's voice she gave a small gasp in shock and sat up.
She listened carefully and chose her toy, "No one minds if I take the narwhal right?" It seemed the most interesting to her. She had once read a book about marine creatures that had called narwhals "unicorns of the sea" For some reason that really appealed to her.

Ryan helped the other boys down the hall, into the room, and onto the tables- mostly carrying Brian by this point. He took a second once they were down to catch his breath, and looked around, taking the room in.
He just wondered, now, where Oz was to tell him how to do this. After all, he'd never actually operated on wounds of this kind before, at least not on Brian.
