A Flight of Magic

The year is 2022, in Salem, Massachusettes. The town is basically unchanged from the state it had been a little over ten years previous, which is to say it had changed only roughly since America's founding. Salem is still infamous for the trials held nearly seven hundred years ago, that condemned almost 33 people as witches. Some residents want to move beyond that part of their past, but it is quite hard- especially as their mascots are witches. With tourists flocking there every year, shops stay open and thrive on selling things like 'Witch's Brew.' But everybody, tourist and not, dissenter or expert, can agree: witches are a thing of the past.
Or, well, so they think.
In Salem alone there are many witches, wiccans, and wizards (fitting into both groups). For decades the two factions have been fighting with one another over their differences and territorial disputes. Then again, for wiccans and witches and wizards... wouldn't a modern-day Salem be the perfect place to live?
The fighting, however, must finally come to an end. An unknown being has created a portal from another world, unleashing terrible creatures into the unwitting town of Salem. It's up to the resident magical users to save the town, find out who did it, and close the portal. They must compromise, get over their differences, and play nicely all while keeping their identity.
Or, well... that's what they're supposed to do...
LEVELS:
THESE LEVELS ASSUMED YOU STARTED IN YOUR MID TEENS. If you have been practicing magic for longer, say since you were a child, you can gain levels a bit quicker than the others.
Level 0: Normal human with tendencies towards the paranormal and magic- perhaps having a sixth sense. Prophets may experience 'deja-vu' and being able to say something will happen.
Level 1: Is what happens when Level 0s strengthen their powers a bit more and get into it further. They are able to perform small bits of magic- getting apples to levitate a few inches, willing something to move, casting simple spells and charms. Prophets can forecast days or even weeks into the future.
Level 2: A bit of a step up from Level 1. They can levitate themselves a few inches, get an apple to fly across the room, and perform mundane tasks such as that- enough weirdness to be able to call oneself a full-blown witch/wizard/wiccan, but small enough to typically not be noted. Prophers can forecast months into the future.
Level 3: The typical height of a person in their late teens, twenties. They can perform small and weak transfigurations, break fragile things with their minds, call things to them easily, and can fly rather easily (on things such as brooms, which many wiccans disprove of). Prophets can forecast about a year into the future.
Level 4: Usually a person gains this by their thirties or fourties, though earlier has been counted. They can do everyday transfigurations easily, break more sturdy things (sturdy as in plastic and lamps) with their minds, and even create things out of thin air. They may also control minds. Prophers can forecast several years into the future.
Level 5: The absolute highest most can go, usually achieved in the fourties and fifties, sometimes even sixties. These are the types of people able to control the minds of many, fly without using other objects, astral projection, and do rather moderate transfiguration (turning people into frogs for example). Prophets can forecast decades into the future.
Level 6: Reserved for the best of the best- think Granny Weatherwax, Dumbledore, Merlin. Heavy-duty transfiguration (the irreversible kind), controlling an entire army, astral projection into another animal, and even, yes- inflicting pain or even killing another person. Prophets can forecast huge events in the distant future- the fate of the world, their grandchildren's deaths.
EACH WITCH GETS HER OWN SPECIALTY POWER. For example, is she good at healing charms? Protective spells? Creating fire? Music? Seeing the future? Telekinesis? Your offensive powersets can typically be centered around these, even your defensive, while still keeping some typical powers for their level.
WITCHES
These are what I like to call 'broomstick witches'. They're the typical witches you see in movies made for kids and for adults- like Halloweentown, Harry Potter, Wizard of Oz/Wicked, old stories and fairytales. I call them broomstick witches because they almost always ride broomsticks. They're typically older (though young ones are not unheard of- for an additional example than the ones above, Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service), eccentric, wear sensible clothes and the pointy hats (mostly for show though, nowadays).
WICCANS
Well, there are two forms of Wiccans, though people sometimes like to mesh the two subsides into one. The first is the general 'teen witch' type thing- the gothic girls practicing witchcraft, wearing form-fitting clothes that are almost always 'midnight black', 'deep purple' or 'crimson'. They're generally the sexier type, though that seems to be wiccans in general. The second type are usually slightly older, late teens and girls in their twenties through their sixties. These types are the girls who practice healing, protecting, and worship Mother Earth in all her glory.
