Like I said, I need technical help with an overheating problem.
So it started off like this: I play DC Universe Online, an MMO. A few months ago, I ran into this problem where I was in the middle of something and all the sudden, the game locks up, makes a constant buzzing noise, and nothing I do makes it stop. Esc doesn't work, pressing ctrl+alt+delete doesn't bring up the window from which I can get the task manager, nothing. I have to forcefully shut down my entire laptop.
This has happened to me several times now. At first I thought it was the game. Prior to this, if the game froze up for some reason, I could use ctrl+alt+delete and it would immediately work and I could shut the game down with the Task Manager. Recently, my friends in game said it sounded like my system was overheating, the whole slowing down until it freezes type thing. They said that there could be dust build up in my fan or heat sink, and if I can I should try opening the machine to get it out.
I can believe dust build up. I don't move the machine often, and I know there is dust build up on the keyboard. And my laptop never does this with any other program, never forces me to shut it down.
So how do you properly get dust out of the system? I need to solve this, it's way too annoying. I tried calling Dell for advice on dust, but they were somehow convinced the hardware was busted, and insisted that I send them my laptop so they could replace the hardware, THEN clear any dust. (Even though to me that's backwards. Wouldn't it be more logical to clean dust off the parts you may need to remove?)
I refuse to believe the hardware is busted. This laptop is only around two years old, and it was a quality machine. It certainly cost a lot. And the clerks at Best Buy did say it was a really good machine to get, so I really doubt this very effective computer is busted already, especially since it doesn't give this problem with anything else, and not necessarily every time I play DCUO.
So, yeah, dust. Can anybody help me, please?
