UNIVERSE: A game truly worthy of legend. An RPG, it combines different styles from games of all types - puzzles, seek-and-find, zombies, war - whatever you want, it's in there. Heralded by the press as 'the mother of all games', the game isn't due to come out until next year.
However, there was a leak, just recently, of a 'testing stage' online. Psyched, hundreds or even thousands of people swooped in for a download. The download would be stuck for hours upon hours on just one sliver of a percent, effectively weeding out 90% of downloaders.
Now those 10% are wishing they hadn't...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The lights of Terran were nearly blinding, blue and florescent down below. From their spots on the plane, the group could easily look down to see them. But there was no point to that. The lights filtered up through the tinted windows, giving the entire cabin the look of daylight. A feminine voice above - many of the group could pick her out as Ellen McLain - broke out over the intercom.
"We are now landing in Terran. Thank you for flying Universal Airlines, we hope you had a good time with us."
Of course, for the group now waking up, the flight was more than likely considered hell.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Zenia sat in an aisle seat, arms crossed, head straight. If it hadn't been for the soft snore, they could have easily thought she was just resting her eyes for a moment.
But not her eyes opened up, and she took a confused glance around. Her brow furrowing, she put her hands on either armrest and looked at the people around her. This wasn't home, and Ray wasn't nearby... and... what the hell, why was her hair white?
She gave a groan, resting her head against the seat in front of her. The last thing she remembered was playing that damned game, setting up a... character...
...Holy shit.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lacie, on the other hand, was in a window seat nearby. Her legs were on top of the seat in front of her, on either side of the headrest, her butt was hanging off the chair, her seatbelt was under her bosom, her arms on either armrest and her forehead pressed to the window.
...She was definitely comfortable, at least!
Rosalind Johanna Ryskamp, better known as RJ, was snoozing in the seat in front of Zenia. Zenia touching the seat with her head made RJ awaken.
RJ sdjusted her glasses and looked around at her unfamiliar settings, "...Where... where the hell am I?" she choked out in a terrified voice.
Had she been kidnapped by some sort of little girl kidnapper while she was asleep? But she hadn't fallen asleep... the last thing she remembered was that stupid game finally downloading.
Joseph came awake with a start, looking around. He was... on some kind of airline? That was... odd. He didn't remember booking a flight, or where he was going, and looking around he didn't recognize anyone he was with. This brought a moments panic to him which he quickly suppressed. It wouldn't do to worry anyone and...
He looked down at the grey beard and long braided hair. Frowning he reached up and tugged at it. Felt real enough. But he knew he wasn't this grey. Maybe a little grey, but what could you expect of a man who had fathered three children, two of which had given him grandchildren, and had suffered through two rather unpleasant divorces? And his hair wasn't this long, and...
He continued to look down and touched his stomach.
Long silver hair and memory lapse pointed to something entirely different than what he was seeing. He glanced around wondering if anyone would notice, and then opened up his... well it was a grey robe apparently. He had abs. He had pecs. Blushing slightly he pulled his robe shut. This wasn't his body. This was... this was the body he'd designed to try out that new game. Was this some kind of dream? He'd let the game download over night after all, trying it out early in the morning or... had he dreamed getting up and logging on? Or had he fallen asleep at the keyboard? Both seemed beyond belief.
"My god..." The young man in... a lab coat and goggles? Who dressed these people?... groaned and seemed to try to clear his head by putting it in white safety gloves. "Was I in the hospital?" He asked. "And what's with all these floating numbers?"
Joseph looked around. He didn't see any floating numbers... yet.
Aino Lehtonen came to at that moment, frowning as she took in her appearance. She didn't recall having anything like this; if anything it seemed more like the clothes her character on the game was wea--
"Impossible. It cannot be." She intoned before striking down hard at the armrest, her frown increasing even more, along with a brief wince, as she lifted her hand from the armrest. The pain felt real enough. Aino briefly glanced towards her seating companions--a young man in a lab coat and what seemed to be Mithrandir if he looked younger--before glancing out the window.
"I don't recognize any of this..."
The first thing that he, like most of the others, registered in his conscious mind was the fact that he was no longer resting peacefully in his single bed, instead spread out across two coach seats on an airliner, his rotting flesh peeling away from the glass where he had been pressed up against it, murky bloodstains pointing to where his facial structure had once been.
"W-... W-..." He started, before he got out of his seat, thrashing his seat belt off. The last moment he had been at his desk, before he had crashed sometime at midnight. "What?"
He looked around, before he looked at his hands. His chest started to rise and fall, panting in fear as his skins started to peel away, as per the character he had created. He started to scream, shooting up and tearing off his belt, in agony and fear.
((Oh god I'm so sorry, here's a fixed post. So, so sorry.))
The player behind Ilairia was finding himself opening their eyes to the shining florescent lights of a plane, their head not only throbbing, but resting on the cushion of an airplane seat.
"...The fuck..." The player's baritone voice groaned as they rolled their head over, covering their eyes from the agonizingly bright lights. What the hell was going on?, he thought. One second ago, they just ended the character creation of the game, before waiting at the loading screen and then... nothing.
...or would it be more would it be more accurate to say 'her'? The player would be noting a distinct lack of... maleness beyond their voice. In fact, he found himself as the very female character he just created.
...there was a loud scream then, mostly of shock.
RJ turned around when she heard the scream and her eyes widened in confusion as she connected the baritone scream with the feminine body, "The fuck?" was all she could say. About the manly voiced woman, about any of this.
The person who went by Zerochrome was in the aisle seat across from Zenia. The man was shirtless save for a long jacket showing a rather well defined torso and his long mane of platinum blonde hair dangled in front of his face as he sat, slumped forward, face against the headrest of the seat in front of him. It didn't look too comfortable. In fact it looked like Zero had passed out right into the seat.
He began to stir, pushing himself off the seat and cracking his neck, which was more than a bit sore. As he rubbed his head, he noticed something off. His hair was nowhere near this full or voluminous! He took a look at the rest of him and soon realized what was going on. However, he didn't move or say anything. He just sort of sat there, eyes fixed forward in a fit of catatonic existentialism.
Alyssa just so happened to be one of the panicking passengers on whatever sort of aircraft they had found themselves on. While she hadn't quite asked herself how she got there or what she was doing, panic tended to come first, especially when the mob mentality of AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH came into play.
Goyadv looked around at everyone panicking and shouting, then looked around for the stewardess who(apparently being on the intercom in a different compartment of the plane) didn't seem to be helping at all. So he raised his hand, and projected his voice.
"Everyone calm down!" He said in a commanding tone. "Something strange is going on here for all of us, and our best chance to figure it out isn't shouting and screaming. Now calm down, sit down, and buckle up. I think we all got screwed over together, and we don't need to get more messed up."
((This is a "Presence Attack" I guess... or whatever you call it. He's using his 8 Charisma to try to get everyone to calm down and focus. Yeah... 8 charisma probably isn't going to get him anywhere, but he's at least trying.))
"Calm down?" RJ asked incredulously, "How do you expect me to calm down? I fucking wake up on a plane and my parents are nowhere and... you people are kidnapping me aren't you!" she said accusingly. A bit far out there to be her first reaction, but it was more reasonable then the real explanation...
Bryan shot forward in his chair at the sound of screams filling the cabin. He looked around, seeing a plane full of people in outfits of varying levels of ridiculousness screaming at the top of their lungs. Bryan didn't remember boarding a plane, nor did he know why half the people on the plane looked like cosplayers, but that could be dealt with when the plane he was on wasn't full of screaming people.
"What in the hell is going on here?! Are we going down? Why is everyone screaming!" he asked his fellow cabin mates, furiously looking around for an explanation.
Aino decided enough was enough and stood up, drawing herself up to her full height as she spoke in a firm, commanding tone. "Everyone, calm down and get back in your seats. It won't do any of us any good to lose our heads and panic before we can figure out what's going on."
((Presence attack. I'm not sure it worked though.))
((Our mage takes a presence attack! 8 charisma against everyones' willpowers. Outcomes are as follows:
Rotcrotch Joe: Calms down. RJ: Does not. Raygun: Nope. Alyssa: Calms down considerably. Ilaria: May punch him in the face for even SUGGESTING she calm down. Aino: Doesn't. Lacie: Doesn't. Zero: Calms down quite a bit too. B-Ron: Probably DOES punch him in the face. Zenia: Doesn't.))
Lacie jumped up in her seat upon hearing everyone shouting. She stared around, and quickly pulled herself into a ball position. What the ever-loving hell was she doing here?
Zenia looked over the room, and grimaced. This whole situation was looking pretty gross.
((Aino gives a presence attack. 30 charisma against everyone's willpowers... she succeeds in all cases.))
While RJ argued at the mage, Aino's firm plea to have everyone calm down, got her calm. Anyone getting firm at her immedietely made her shut up, it made her feel like she was in trouble.
"Okay lady." RJ said, "I just... I just really wanna know whats up" she said sounding a bit vulnerable and like she needed a hug. Her cussing and outspokeness were just her way of trying to hide how scared she was.
Goyadv winced at Aino's firm tone and sat back down meekly. He hadn't even really gotten up, just raised his hand for attention and looked back at the rest of the group, and still he ended up back in his seat. Well, he'd tried, he'd failed, he filed that away for future note.
"Interesting..." Raygun said softly in a surprisingly serene tone, looking at Goyadv and Aino. "Very... interesting."
"To be fair, I'm not entirely sure what is going on myself." Aino began, keeping an eye on the crowd to ensure they remained calm. "But for all intents and purposes, I believe we can safely assume what most, if not all of us, suspect." There was a calculated pause as she cleared her throat. "We're in the game. Somehow, we've become our characters and left the world we knew behind us."
"Nobody else is seeing little help windows popping up whenever they look at something, are they?" Raygun asked.
"... no..." Goyadv replied.
Raygun raised his hand. "I modded my interface with macros from the FAQ text file that was attached. I think I made myself a bit crazy. The help files aren't that helpful for one, though I think I could guess everyones sign on names just from looking at them. And maybe getting close to them."
"I didn't catch your name."
"Oh, right, you can't see them... I'm... um... call me Raygun. I signed on as a scientist."
"Goyadv. Wizard."
"Yeah, um, you used a vee instead of a u at the end."
"Go Ya d-Vvvv" He pronounced it slowly. "It's supposed to be a vee."
"Oh." He looked uncomfortable in his seat.
"The name's Zenia." The white-haired woman a few seats away said, listening to the conversation. "Wish I could have thought to mod the system. Maybe, I don't know, with something that would get us the fuck out of here."
"Bry-er, B-Ron. I remember choosing Survivalist before... whatever's going on here happened. This," he said, gesturing towards a machete he was holding "would seem to support that. Now, before we continue our introductions, I only ask how in the hell do we get out of this plane."
"There should be emergency entrances. I want some of you to start looking for these while the rest of you check for any life vests under the seats, and so on...We might need them." Aino declared as it occurred to her that the plane might not be on land. "As for me, I'm checking out the cockpit, nobody leave the plane until I come back." And with that, Aino Lehtonen had fully embraced her "Leader" Character and dashed off towards the cockpit.
"I'm RJ." RJ said as the introductions began, "I chose Rogue class." She looked down and saw she was wearing the tattered clothes her rogue, had worn, and not the PJs she had been wearing while staying up late, downloading the game. It was like she had turned into a mini-version of her character. But we can't be in a game, thats just stupid. I mean its weird we all downloaded the same game, but thats just stupid." she said, shaking her head.
As Aino entered the cockpit, she found out something very strange. The pilot sat in his chair, stationary as the sky outside moved, his eyes unseeing.
There was nobody else there.
Back in the cabin, as everyone unbuckled and started moving about the cabin to look around, they would notice something as well. There were emergency exits, life vests, etcetera etcetera. While they could put on the life vests, the exits wouldn't open.
It was becoming very obvious that they weren't meant to leave the plane, nor were they meant to go into the cockpit.
As everyone was exploring the cabin, RJ realized how desperately she needed to pee. Must of been all that Mountain Dew she glugged while waiting for the download.
She located the bathroom and opened it... and found a man peeing.
"Oh I'm so sorry!" she said, "I'll just..."
He didn't even look back at her... he just stood there taking a leak.
As she started closing the door, she got a glimpse of his "equipmemnt", completely pixelated over. Censored, the space over it just completely blurred.
"HOLY SHIT!" she shrieked, shuting the bathroom door, a look of pure horror and confusion on her face. "THERE'S A GUY WITH A BLURRY DICK IN THERE!"
Aino walked back into the cabin, frowning at the lack of options. "I guess that means we're stuck here for the time being." She didn't like the idea, especially given the reality that they were now literally in the game.
Bryan responded to RJ's screams. He opened the door to confirm what she was going on about. Bryan paused for a moment, tilting his head to the side somewhat in an attempt to get a better view. "Um.... that. Y'know, censorship looks a lot more unsettling in three dimensions," he said in a tone somewhere between concern and horror.
"Hey guys, I think this fella in the bathroom, er, needs a bit of help!"
"What sort of help?"
Zenia walked to the back, fighting back the urge to swing her hips even more than usual. She caught up with the two and looked inside.
Her eyebrow raised and she looked to Bryan.
"You're sick, yknow that? I don't think there's anything we can do for censorship. Hell, this guy isn't even moving..."
Hesitatingly, she inched forward, and quickly touched his shoulder - to fall right off.
They weren't meant to touch him anyways.
While parts of the 'party' around her moved around, Ilaria just silently sat in her seat, having stopped screaming in panic. At least outwardly, that is. Her face was still showing signs of shock, however- mostly because nothing made sense.
"If what that Aino chick said is true," They said in their mismatched baritone of a voice. "This is the opening cut scene. Sit down, and shut up. We'll be done in a few minutes."
