Lately, the earth seems to have been shifting more than usual. Cities below the surface have been getting destroyed at remarkable rates, flooding has driven those on the surface out of business and higher into their spires, and on the horizon plumes of ash rise and rain back down onto the sea. Voyagers, excited but weak, lost at sea due to the heavy storms and strange movements of the sea finally return with news - they say they watched a chain of islands rise from the depths! They were unable to explore, rushing for home with little to no supplies left, but each crew member was adament - out there, somewhere, there was new land, too big to be a simple Apsidochelone or Hafgufa. Understandably, people were frightened and excited about the news - more land to live on, to expand to! But what if it was fake? They wouldn't just ship out leagues of people to determine that, right? Right. Which is why they took one ship, with a skilled captain and a crew of what they consider to be dispensibles - volunteers from below the surface, even some of the underwater area's most skilled. Should they find land and return, they would be rewarded handsomely - and if not, if their lives were lost or there was no land to be found, the damage to the area's population would be minimal. So what do you say? Volunteers, a motley crew on a giant ship, ready to find land, adventure, and danger along the way? www.dolldivine.com/ocean-fashion-scene-maker.php - Check out this for a possible appearance maker! SETTING I: Creatures & Lore*
Creatures:
In this setting, many prehistoric creatures, and creatures previously thought to be myths, have reappeared or been found over the years - so things like Liopleurodons are completely real threats in this setting, for those in the water, sailors, other monsters and, upon occassion, even surfacers.
Aspidochelone - The island whale. These giants are friendly and gentle, and seemingly appear out of nowhere to those in need who may have drowned without it. They were considered a legend by many - having only heard of them by tales of people who have been lost at sea - until their existance, though rare, was proven about a century previous. Some people have crafted their own religion after the island whale, stating that it is a god in flesh come to save the righteous.
Leviathan - Little is known about this monster that plagues the deep, terrorizing and even decimating underwater cities. Witnesses and survivors of its wrath have said that it is a massive, sleek, dark mass with incredibly strong claws and pincers - not unlike a crustacean - and piercing eyes. Luckily, the Leviathan is even rarer than the Aspidochelone, and thus, many people still doubt it exists, claiming those who saw it were terrified into delusions and the cities were destroyed by landslides triggered by volcanic activity.
Kraken - The fabled giant squid of old... except for the fact that it's extremely shy, even of creatures that are much smaller than it. Krakens are hard to find now as they are hunted by much larger creatures and also by the humans who sink into its depths.
Ceirean - The sea serpent. Unlike the other giant monsters on this list, the Ceirean is a very prominent creature, and due to that, is probably the most feared by those beneath the waves. The Ceirean is violent and aggressive, and has caused many deaths over the years. Its venom is a strong anticoagulant and causes severe pain in the infected individual - but people ARE able to survive it with proper medical treatment. There is also its cousin which prowls frigid waters, the Nidhogg, whose venom has the interesting property of causing extreme frostbite.
Hafgufa - The false island. This is a stranded sailor's worst nightmare. The Hafgufa seems just like the Aspidochelone, an island on the back of a fish. Unlike the Aspidochelone, however, the Hafgufa is not gentle or helpful - it lures in unwary sailors simply to be an asshole.
Trunko - The Trunko is not unlike the manatee in its appearance and mannerisms - a gentle creature the size of a killer whale. The Trunko is hunted to near extinction - for it's blubber (used in food and for some clothing on the surface), for it's tusks (used for jewelry and in medicines), and especially for its stomach lining, which is seen as a panacea and has the ability to cure wounds and infections better than any dry land herb.
Zaratan - Particularly large sea turtles that travel in huge groups. There's not a whole lot special about them, other than the fact that they disappear every few months from this area, and that they seem to oppose other, much larger monsters, as attacks stop whenever they're around.
Tuska - Possibly one of the most dangerous creatures of all, the Tuska are giant jellyfish that travel in huge swarms. They may LOOK soft and gentle - but they are anything but. These are one of the creatures in the ocean that have been experimented on in the past - and as such, they have grown brains not unlike humans. Being stung by one of these things, or worse, attacked, gives you a one-way ticket to severe, agonizing paralysis (and death, obviously).
Lore:
Tempest - Tempest has been used as a symbol by many underwater cities to bring good luck and to spiritually ward off monsters. She is considered the original protector after the great floods of the past.
Mairin - Mairin goes hand in hand with Tempest - in fact, many people consider them sisters. Mairin, however, has a bit of a darker story to her, and she is the face the ocean takes on when it is angered, preying on ships and their crews with violent storms or the monsters prowling her depths.
The Seven Mariners - Legends tell of a group of seven surfacers from the past who survived the great floods. Their legend states that at the beginning they went around to help the other people who were injured or who couldn't swim, bringing them back to the surface and whatever dry land there was by then; it goes on to state that as time wore on, they helped build the cities both underwater and above.
The most interesting fact of the Seven Mariners is that, in their legends, they never aged, remaining perpetually youthful. The Seven Mariners have, over the years, become the most popular and universal legend of the area - scores of children are named for them, their deeds and adventures are told as bedtime stories, tokens of their symbols are sold in shops to hang in houses, on ships, and on necklaces.
The Mariners are worshiped--their cult followers prefer the term served--in the same manner as the Lwa from Haitian Vodoun, each with their own ceremonies and rituals. They have even been syncretized with the Lwa, thus allowing for similarities in offerings or preparations of altars and ceremonies.
Each of the Mariners represent a different virtue, or trait to survive with:
Erol, representing confidence, is generally considered the leader of the Mariners, the boy who would speak for them among others. Erol has been syncretized with Agwe Tawayo, mainly because he is the leader of the Mariners and Agwe Tawayo is the Master of the Seas. Because of this, he is counted as one of the Rada and it is not uncommon that ceremonies for both Erol and Met Agwe to be held jointly. His special color is green (which leads to dried seaweed being an adornment on his altars) and his special animals are lobsters and crabs. This also leads to images where Erol is sometimes represented as an Admiral, since Agwe Tawayo is also considered an Admiral.
Valerius represents strength, both physical and emotional - giving someone his token is very popular around the New Year or during a period of mourning. Valerius has been syncretized with various Ogou Lwa, particularly Ogou Feray, Ogou Batala and Ogou Denmannier. His special color is blue and his special animal is the sea turtle, which has caused some believers to consider the zaratan a creation of Valerius and thus venerate them as he is venerated.
Kallistrate represents bravery, her tokens are usually given to expectant mothers. She and Valerius are the warriors of the Mariners - as such, they're both often depicted on cannons and other weapons. Kallistrate has been syncretized with Ezili Danto, in large part due to the trend of her tokens being given to expectant mothers. That her image is also embossed on cannons furthers the connection and thus makes her one of the Petro Lwa. Her color is black and her special animal is the Orca/Killer Whale. Her altars and shrines often have at least one image of this creature in them.
Desta represents the opposite spectrum, of innocence - her tokens are placed around the cradles of children on the surface. Desta is a unique case of dual syncretism, having been identified both with Ezili Freda and Ezili Danto: Danto because her tokens are used as protective amulets for children, and Freda because she is considered the delicate yet fierce female of the Mariners. This leads to her being honored both in Rada and Petro ceremonies. Her color is yellow and her special animal is the narwhal. Just like with Danto, a pair of daggers is left at her altar for use in possessions. Vodouissants consider this an interesting and unique case because usually Ezili Freda and Ezili Danto are quarreling sisters that cannot stand each other at all.
Charon is the representative for intelligence, the plan-maker, the diplomat. Together, Desta and Charon's tokens are typically hung around hospitals and charities, as the two together represent care and generosity. Charon is somewhat difficult to place but he has been syncretized both with Papa Loko of the Rada and Gran Bwa of the Petro, both being used interchangeably though some lineages prioritize one identification over the other. When Desta comes into the picture, both her and Charon are syncretized with the Marassa; at times, Valerius is added and they are syncretized with the Marassa-nan-Petro. His color is red and his special animal is the sperm whale. Interestingly, he is considered to be the husband/wife of Trivia, Desta and Valerius!
Trivia represents sacrifice, and her tokens are hung around the coffins of martyrs. Trivia is a Mariner of conflicting syncretisms, having been identified both with LaSiren/LaBalen (which would make her Erol's wife) as well as Maman Brigitte. Her special color is gray but her altars have also been adorned with teal and black, representing the deep unknown of the sea. When her trait of sacrifice and patronage of martyrs comes into the fore, the connection to Maman Brigitte is the stronger and it is said she takes care of souls lost at sea. In this aspect, Trivia and Charon are identified with Maman Brigitte and Baron Samedi of the Gede. Her special animal is the vampire squid. This is another interesting case of syncretism because usually Gede presence is not allowed within a Rada ceremony; Trivia's ceremonies are the sole exception.
Faustus represents luck - the blind Mariner. His tokens are given to students at exams and the badly ill, to call forth luck to keep them safe. Faustus has been syncretized both with Kouzen Azaka and Ti Zandor though his association with Kouzen Azaka is the stronger. Seafarers always look to him to luck and take especial care never to hunt rays for they are considered his special animal. His special color is white.

NAME: Aureliano - Aurel for short - Verne AGE: 27 LEVEL: Adapted 1 MUTATIONS: He can hold his breath for a good thirty minutes, and his skin has amazing traction - he can grip to the edges of a ship (or the body of a fish or shark) without chains, and is able to push his body to go all the way down to the middle of the Twilight Zone. He's trying to push himself further to get to the Midnight Zone, but knows that's probably not gonna happen. APPEARANCE: imageshack.us/a/img194/6669/e8lx.jpgSKILLS/TALENTS: His diving is a pretty huge deal for him. He's also pretty strong and can lift heavy bits of metal with ease. ANIMAL BONDS: He has a strange fondness for barnacles. BIO: Aurel is a complete jokester, it's hard to see him being serious and he'll make a joke of most things. He's boisterous and friendly, and is pretty much a big teddy bear even though he tries to act dangerous. He's grown up in the Shallows his whole life, never seeing the insides of the city, and, like his father, has worked as a scavenger hunting for materials down below. He's always had a fascination with ships, and is exciting to finally be on one and see how they work. NAME: Vincent Royce Cousteau AGE: 21 LEVEL: Adapted 2 MUTATIONS: Vincent has gills (which he covers up out of the water to breathe through normal lungs), and has only three semi-discernable toes, the rest having merged and pushed out into webbing like many level 2 Adapteds, while his fingers have also started to web. APPEARANCE: imageshack.us/a/img849/2913/q07q.jpgSKILLS/TALENTS: He's one of the fastest swimmers in this particular area, aided by the fact he's so young and thus generally more agile. He also, like some Adapteds, has become in tune with this area, and can sense when something's wrong or different. ANIMAL BONDS: He's pretty good at communicating with whales - mainly the larger ones - and can imitate their calls to quite remarkable effect. BIO: Vincent's one of the younger persons of the crew, still considered a child in this society - or at least by his family. He has three elder brothers and five elder sisters, so he's always been a bit more protected than most people. He's pretty desperate to prove he's more than just a kid, however, and joined this trip to do just that - and also because he figured they'd need a person who only ever got caught by a barricuda once. NAME: Odessa AGE: 23 LEVEL: Hybrid 2 MUTATIONS: Odessa is your standard (non-vicious) fairytale mermaid, with the ability, like most other merpersons, to have legs and be able to breathe at the surface. APPEARANCE: Underwater: imageshack.us/a/img59/8674/xket.jpgSurface: imageshack.us/a/img801/9027/z4q8.jpgSKILLS/TALENTS: Odessa is... something of a siren. She possesses the ability of an unnaturally beautiful voice, capable of many different sounds - she can, then, mimic the sounds of dolphins, whales, and other animals to 'communicate' with them, or change her voice to sound like another person's. ANIMAL BONDS: She enjoys the company of most 'exotic' fish - angelfish, in particular. BIO: Odessa is a young and delicate creature of the sea, small, sensitive, and demure. She had never seen the city until recently, when, with all the recent activity, she accompanied her parents to the city to hear the news. She hadn't, however, been completely devoid of knowledge of the surface before then, nor had she never seen a human before - she'd travel to other bits of the ocean, and she'd sometimes pop up to the surface to talk to people on their boats - after all, Odessa has always been very sociable. Her adventures upwards became more and more frequent just about last year - a particular boat would pass by, with the same crew of fishermen, every day, and there was one that always caught her eye and would talk to her. Really, he's sort of why she joined - she hopes that they might pass on their travels, and he might fall in love with her as a human (sort of). After all... she's still VERY innocent.

NAME: Trivia Acheron, the Tenth of Her Name AGE: Appears 25 (is actually much older) LEVEL: Appears to be in the spectrum between Shallows and Swimmers; is actually a Hybrid 2 Cecaelia. MUTATIONS: If any they aren't apparent but she can breathe underwater and dive to incredibly deep depths, even in the Trenches. Her cecaelia form finishes into a vampire squid lower body and she is able to switch from this to human without problems. Like many cecaelia she has the capability to eject clouds of ink for fast getaways, natural camouflage to match her surroundings and the uncanny ability to contort herself in order to fit through the smallest openings or cramped spaces. She also has far more strength, stamina, speed, flexibility and endurance than would be expected for her stature but that is due to events in her past.* APPEARANCE: SKILLS/TALENTS: Can manipulate darkness and shadows (now mainly used to conceal her presence), has a good head for navigation and tends to rely more on heavenly bodies than equipment to get her bearings. Is quite stealthy even sans shadow manipulation and a capable fighter regardless of the setting. ANIMAL BONDS: She has an especial bond with the colossal vampire squids but can form bonds with other cephalopods as well. BIO: She is impersonating her own descendant but is the actual Mariner herself, nor is it known why she's doing this. She is somewhat distant and gruff with her crew but otherwise looks after them as best she can. She is the captain of the clipper ship Lyra Zephyr which, like many other sailing vessels, specializes in salvage and scavenging the depths for lost treasures.

NAME: Cyprian Camp AGE: 29 LEVEL: Hybrid 2 MUTATIONS: Is essentially a merman... but with the bottom of a seahorse instead. Also Equine Merfolk also pocess the...unique reproductive system of the seahorse, where it is the male that carries the offspring to term. APPEARANCE: 4.bp.blogspot.com/-jCsAb0BWacA/Ue6G89wXKlI/AAAAAAAAV-4/gRMBLA4TMvo/s1600/Sam+Claflin+as+Finnick+Odair.JPG ...But with a seahorse tail. A yellowish-orange one. SKILLS/TALENTS: Is an archaeologist of sorts, who has gone through many ruins of the ancient landdwellers and has extracted many lost artifacts. ANIMAL BONDS: He bonds with seahorses BIO: Very quirky and talks at a mile a minute. Easily excitable especially about history and his work. However behind this cheerful exterior is tragedy, Cyprian had recently lost his wife, Rhiannon, during an archaelogy dig gone awry, and is trying his hardest to throw himself into his work, to get through the pain... and little does he know that Rhiannon might of left him something behind...

NAME: Milo Joki. AGE: 45. LEVEL: Hybrid 1. MUTATIONS: Capable of breathing on both land and water, he is also a fast swimmer, albeit pales in comparison to Vincent. However, he is capable of diving to further depths, can see in the dark and has webbed hands and feet. APPEARANCE: static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/3/36340/1317867-abe_sapien_1.jpg Still 'packing', Milo wears cargo-pants, cut off and tied up just above his knees. That way his junk isn't whipping out and he can still swim. SKILLS/TALENTS: A hunter. Like many, Milo is a part of the recent epidemic of the Trunko extinction, considered to be one of the best. He carries a spear-gun and a knife, whittled from tough whale bone. ANIMAL BONDS: Sharks. BIO: An Australian man-fish, Milo grew up hunting since he could first remember. His father would often take Milo out with his crew to hunt Trunko, while his mother would act as an apothecary and doctor for the other citizens. There isn't much that Milo hasn't killed. Part of the reason he joined the crew is the thrill of finding new game, having already killed Trunko, Zaratan, Ceirean and Kraken. Laid-back and easy going, life is a game to Milo. He enjoys everything and it is hard to make him sad, depressed or to lose hope for the future. He always sees the brightest side of things and is prone to forming close bonds of friendship on the first meeting. However, he is not afraid of a fight, always eager for a scrap, but harbors no hard feelings, often helping the man he just beat the shit out of up and inviting him for a beer. Cicero is his best-friend and the two are hunting companions. An injury or slight to one or the other often leads the pair to violence. NAME: Cicero. AGE: 30. LEVEL: Hybrid 3. MUTATIONS: Man only in mind, Cicero has a darkened, slim-like body and protruding eyeballs to scan for predators. His jaw is wide-set and lined with sharp teeth and his hands and feet are webbed with protruding claws. On-top of his head, he has a phosphorous lobe that he uses to bait fish and scare off prey. He is also able to survive the deep pressure of the trenches. APPEARANCE: fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/068/c/0/deep_sea_murloc_by_arsenal21-d3b8nj9.jpgSKILLS/TALENTS: Incredibly skilled at fishing, swimming and scavenging due to his natural inclinations. He is also able to swallow things and spit them back up selectively, like a self-contained storage container. ANIMAL BONDS: Angler Fish and Clams. BIO: Abandoned at birth, Cicero grew up on the metaphorical 'streets'. He made his way by using his natural talents to scavenge where others could not and hunt rare fish for surface dwellers to feast on, as well as to feed his own. He and Milo are old companions, first through business, and have joined the crew on the condition that one comes along with the other. Cicero is shy and self-contained, ashamed of his appearance and quiet. He often wears a hood when on the ship to hide himself. However, he is confident in his abilities and is always looking to show off. He is also an avid reader, when he can, looking for books. He worships Aspidochelone, the Island Whale. This is shown by his wearing of a whale-bone amulet devoted to the creature and his reverence of whales and other similar creatures. He'll fuck a Trunko up, though. He doesn't give a fuck.

I'm sorry Corte but I will have to ask you to alter the bit about your first character hunting Tuska because for one, it's highly unlikely he will survive and tuska aren't very huntable to begin with. You also have to consider these are giant jellyfish that evolved a brain.
Also: why hunt zaratans? They're keeping the tuska population under control

Aw, I thought it was like... part of a crew, not by himself. :3. Fixed. And I misunderstood it as him hunting solo. Still Tuska are pretty much unhuntable and Ceirean would have to be a team effort. Presumably that will come up at some point. Out of curiosity is there a particular shark Milo bonds with faster than others?

For the sake of ease, let's just say Great White. Like his spirit animal, thinking he's a hunter and shit. But yeah, It's all good. Edited the Tuska out and I think It's safe to assume Milo at least had a crew to hunt all the others. :3.

SETTING: Landscape
In the far future, mass floods have overtaken the world. The ice caps are gone, and with them, dry land as we know it. There are some pieces of land but very few and scarce, as well as being artificially made. This city, the hustle and bustle of metropolitan activity, where merchants and workers congregate, is called Thalassa, and it is considered the capital and pinnacle of the modern world. It is surrounded by many underwater cities, filled with Adapteds - people whose bodies have adapted to living within the ocean after all these years. There are many types of Adapteds, and many layers of underwater cities, depending upon how low one goes.
Metals are a precious commodity in this setting, due to the salty air corroding many - many Adapteds make small fortunes on scavenging salvageable, non-corrodable metals from sunken buildings and ships below the waves and selling the materials to Surfacers, to make buildings. There ARE still ships in this setting – sailing vessels which venture the vast oceans for food or treasure to scavenge. In addition there’s also the Community Ships—large steel barges that were once luxury cruise ships now re-purposed to serve as floating colonies and settlements: the Yemaya, the Amphitrite, the Ganga, the Nepthys and the Tiamat are some of these Community Ships.
In terms of military forces, there are no armies but there's still special operatives and secret police agents as well as intelligence officers or counter-terrorism-esque forces. There is also supposed to be a nation but only in the loosest sense of the word: in practice, it is a collection of city states with Thalassa at the fore as their leader. However, one has to consider the idea that some of these underwater cities may have actually sprung up courtesy of Thalassa's long-standing tradition of tossing its criminals to the waves.

NAME: Lt. Cmdr. Jett Wraye AGE: 31 LEVEL: 2.5 (A very human like level 3, or a very engineered 2) MUTATIONS: Thick 'dolphin like' skin(leading to a decided lack of muscle tone being visible), pressure adapted musculature, swimming adapted flexiblity, much less body hair, gill structures, active sonar organ(and passive sonar adaptations), elongated webbed toes(but not fingers), low light/undersea wavelength adapted eyes. APPEARANCE: SKILLS/TALENTS: Cmdr. Wraye has military, or similar, training to kill in hand to hand combat both above and below water, and trained with infiltration and evasion techniques, and with numerous weapons. He typically carries numerous weapons or gear, both high tech and low, in his hydrodynamic body suit. The most obvious part of his gear that required the most special training involved his 'cape' which is an incredibly high tech self healing memory material. In water it spreads out into 'wings' and even 'flaps', capable of propelling him with reasonable stealth at impressively high speeds, though he has a visual profile similar to a manta ray when he's using it. He also carries compressed gas guns, being trained in the differences between firing them above and below water. While not particularly skilled or trained in it, his organized mind seems to have a talent for quartermastering and supply distribution, at least on the small scale of a ship. ANIMAL BONDS: Nothing in particular, though he does seem to understand rays and other creatures that use similar 'wings'(certain flat fish and eels, even flying fish in a manner) if only from a hydrodynamic standpoint. BIO: Jett Wraye was groomed from an early age to be one of the few 'soldiers' left in this world. More like a counter terrorist operative than actual military forces as were known when there were nations. He follows orders often without question simply through reflex at this point, though is able to take initiative if left with an open ended problem(which is typically what he is given to solve). Despite a strict exercise regime and practice routine that eats heavily into any kind of social time, he tries to stay social and friendly, though at times he tends towards being somewhat sociopathic and unable to properly relate to others. The organization(possibly a high technology corporation from the under sea city) that trained Cmdr. Wraye has heard of the exploration project, and in exchange for supplying the ship(possibly under the table if they don't want to be officially connected with it), one of their own would 'volunteer' to crew it. This led Cmdr. Wraye to take post as quartermaster, looking after his masters investment in this crew.

NAME: Jules Aronnax, ph.D AGE: 28 LEVEL: Adapted 3, Hybrid 1 MUTATIONS: Jules comes from a long line of crab people. In his case, his mutations are particularly more prominent and fierce than the majority of his immediate family (taking after the Fiddler Crab, on his mother's side), a clan of great warriors and individuals with a history of excessive violence. APPEARANCE: SKILLS/TALENTS: Jules is a licensed medical practitioner. Where he actually got that licence is still up for debate, but he generally settles for the larger universities and other institutions. Nonetheless, his skills in the general fields of medical science are formidable, and he cares little for wages and pay grades. His interests also lay in the field of marine biology (not that there's many other varieties, these days), and he has written many studies on ocean flora and fauna. ANIMAL BONDS: Crabs. Just crabs. Useless? SURPRISE BETCH.BIO: Growing up on the bad side of a Leviathan-besieged Midnight Zone city, Jules Aronnax comes from a long line of scavengers, hunters, and warriors; his crab-handed forefathers were not known for their sympathy or mercy, or interest in gaining any knowledge beyond how to kill things as quickly and efficiently as possible. Which is why it was a great shock to his family that young Jules displayed little interest in the death of other living creatures. He loved living things; in fact, he wanted to study them, and even worse, help them live longer. Despite being the black sheep of the family, Jules was remained determined, and with the proper education, sought an education in medicine and biology. Jules, with a license to practice medicine (from where, he rarely says) began his illustrious career in the field by venturing out into the briny depths of the ocean, to study his craft firsthand ( knowledge without mileage, for lack of a better term, is bullshit, as he says). He's written many a published study on the anatomy of many sea creatures, specifically the effects and potency of their stings; his most recent came from an affair with a stray Tuska, which left him heavily scarred and near death (luckily, he was resussitated before any long term damage could be dealt). This resulted in his research grant being rescinded by the university at which he worked. To stymie this recent spell of unemployment, Doctor Aronnax signed himself up for the crew of the Lyra Zephyr, as the ship physician, in order to continue his research through alternative means.

Okay so I've been looking up positions and ranks in a ship's crew. In hindsight I should have asked this earlier but we'll just let this sort itself out for the most part with the exception of Sailing Master because that one definitely needs to be assigned to a character; otherwise we'll have an aimless ship and crew and that's not a good thing on the open seas. Moving along, I'll be using the Pirate model rather than Navy (though not necessarily the same conventions): Ship's Captain: Trivia Acheron Quartermaster: Jett Wraye Sailing Master: Cyprian Camp Boatswain: Carpenter/Surgeon: Jules Aronnax Master Gunner*: Mate: *Marked this one because the Lyra Zephyr is built for fast escapes rather than long naval battles. However she is still armed because common sense. link
