I got sooooo many flashbacks to this forum when I first heard the news about Midnight Sun. Apparently she’s doing a book tour for it? Smh

After a decade of Fifty Shades of Grey (D-tier Twilight fanfic) I'm sort of glad to have more Twilight, I tell you hwhat.

Hellooo and lol. I was a bit concerned the forum would be gone.
Anyway, I'll be skipping MS. What about you all?

At nearly 700 pages, I imagine it'll be too long and plodding to be a fun time-waster read, so I'm skipping it. The Goodreads reviews sure are funny, though.

bro it's seven hundred pages, i could like read a good brick of a book or at least FUN shitty one in the time it'll take to read that.

I vaguely remember reading a few pages of the leaked version several years ago. Not an experience I want to repeat :/

Well, to be fair, at least SMeyer finally finished writing it. Say what you will about the book itself or about SMeyer herself, but I remember when most of us thought she would be too upset about the infamous leak to ever finish it. But now she did, so good for her for that at least.

You know, I always believed she would get around to finishing it. Something about how attached she is to the Twilight world told me she wasn't quite done with it. And now various articles online are saying that more books are planned but it doesn't say on her official site. 🤔

I was browsing the Twilight wiki the other day doing some light research on Leah (because I wanted to do a post featuring her in the “If YOUR characters met people in Twilight” thread), and I saw a Trivia note saying SMeyer was considering writing a Twilight book from Leah’s perspective. My thoughts on that have already been posted in its own thread, so that’s all I’ll say about it here.

Like, ignoring the fact I obviously think it's dreck (I own a site dedicated to shitting on it lol), I thought the advent of literal, actual porn for the horny moms portion of the fandom like 50 Shades would've killed it. Guess not. 🤷

I think the fact that Twilight isn't porn actually gives it enough of a mystique to maintain interest. 50 Shades doesn't leave anything to the imagination.
I'll be completely unsurprised if SMeyer continues to write Twilight books and make tons of money... but I hope they'll be of a reasonable length.

Guess not. 🤷 The nostalgia factor could have something to do with it. It’s been roughly 15 years since the first book came out and roughly 12 years since the first movie came out, and about 12 years since the last book and about 8 years since the last movie (not including the spinoffs and companion pieces, which were barely a blip on the radar compared to the main series). Say what you will about Twilight, but there’s no denying that it had a massive fanbase back in its heyday. And while the Twilight series as a whole is nowhere near as popular today as it was then, I’m pretty sure there are still people out there who remember it fondly and/or who couldn’t resist reading it for laughs.

SMALL FOLLOW-UP: I found a full review of Midnight Sun on YouTube (because no way in H-E-DoubleHockeySticks was I going to waste my money buying it), and it is just as bad as, if not arguably much worse than, the original Twilight.
Enjoy the review!

I just skipped through it a bit, and the excerpts he read are hilarious. It sounds like, "My Twisted World: The Story of Edward Cullen".
As one commenter said, Robert Pattinson's performance in Twilight becomes a lot more understandable when you consider that SMeyer let him read a couple chapters of Midnight Sun. All the scowls and glares make perfect sense.

^Indeed it does. I also wrote the following comment on that video, regarding his comments about Bella constantly being called selfless without any real evidence to support such a claim:
All the random injections of the word "selfless" to refer to Bella remind me of a common complaint about the Twilight series back in its heyday. There were posts and threads galore on the Twilight Sucks website discussing how selfish, bitchy, narcissistic, and sometimes downright sociopathic Bella was. So from that perspective, Edward constantly calling Bella "selfless"/"compassionate"/etc. with little to no evidence to back it up comes across as SMeyer saying "NO NO NO, Bella's not selfish; Edward TOTALLY recognizes how selfless she is, YOU STUPID HATERS!!!"
Oddly enough, at least one of the people who responded to me actually remembered this site.

There is no way she's not self-aware enough to realize how much of a pretentious dickbag it makes Eddy sound.

I brought the audiobook version of Midnight Sun for free. That's it. I didn't use money, I only used Audible credits so I didn't have to spend a dime on it. I don't have the time, nor the energy to read a full length novel, but I also enjoy listening to audiobooks. Let me remind you guys that E.L. James published a book called Grey, from, you guessed it, Christian Grey's perspective. The book came out in 2015. This must be what inspired SMeyer to publish Midnight Sun. Who knows? I also have the audiobook version of Grey, and it's tedious. It's difficult to listen to, because it's so boring.

I have to agree. There are way too many hilarious scenes (both in book and film) for her to have been taking it 100% seriously. And honestly, as terrible as they are, I can't call them generic or boring. The Twilight movies are really good if you have people to watch and riff over them with. 50 Shades is awfully dull and depressing by comparison.

And honestly, as terrible as they are, I can't call them generic or boring. The Twilight movies are really good if you have people to watch and riff over them with. 50 Shades is awfully dull and depressing by comparison. Movies also taking the piss out of the source material as often as they can, since those books genuinely are dreadfully written, even if I think this whole site's reaction to shitty YA fic that's only like half a step worse than Harry Potter in terms of quality was weird and unjustified in hindsight. But I've also always been very open that I despise HP the second Rowling tried to "grow with the audience" and just showed she was a hack in a genre and demographic already full of them. Only that Rowling thought she was as good as the mainstream said she was- which isn't really the same vibe I get from Meyer honestly, she strikes me as like... surprisingly humble? Even shit users would rag on her for- like joking about how she'd leave her husband for Edward- is pretty standard "middle aged married couple" shit. At worst she just seemed to have a bloated sense of intelligence, which isn't really a problem exclusive to her and honestly described not just 95% of the staff here but swathes of the user base too and honestly most writers in general. She's definitely a shithead based on the gossip around racial politics in movie casting, though- she refused to let them cast minorities as anything but lackeys of the bad guys. KStew and RPatz were very open as soon as they could be that they fucking hated the source material and would do the best they could with it; and in hindsight, that's very much the vibe a lot of the crew and cast in those movies give off. Big paycheck movies that were the cultural equivalent to an MCU movie in terms of how the crew apparently generally doesn't give a shit about the source material, except Twilight movies being so hilariously crap and the disdain for the material that drips through those movies makes them a hell of a lot more memorable because I am not a Twilight fan and therefore it doesn't bother me the way it does with Marvel.
