This is an interesting case for me. My friends aren't as into stories and literature as I am, but they still read around.
In my basement, a couple weeks ago, we were talking about careers we were going to take when we got out. I told them I wanted to be a writer, and one of them asked for a summary of one of my stories, so I gave it to them, and they told me it was pretty screwed up.
At first I thought they were just fooling around with me, until I took a step back and looked at my work. I could see where they were coming off from. So I was wondering, if any of you ever thought of taking a look at your work and wondering if the average reader would think of it as incredibly dark?

Yes; two example. One I wrote for class (why would I do that?) that had someone having their eye ripped out. In detail. And another where a man's heart was removed by a demon, while he was alive and awake.
My classmates were pretty creeped out.

Yeah, although it bothers me a little since I don't try to come off as dark. I mean I wrote one short story about an affair and it was seen as "disturbing" even though no one was hurt/killed or anything like that. I just decribed what each person was feeling.
Then again, it's really up to the readers on how they interpret the story.

Oh yes, my poetry mostly is very dark/weird/creepy for some odd reason.

Um... yeah. I've noticed that some of my work is incredibly dark/creepy.
Luckily, I've only given one or two things to my Writing teacher. But I did write this story about Valkyries for a scholarship... I hope they don't think I'm a loon.

Yeah. Ohhh yeah. I've gotten a lot of shit for the majority of things I've written. Which is to be expected, really, with the subject matter I'm usually writing about.

Yeah, me too. It's kind of strange though, some of the stuff that I've written that was supposed to be light and fluffy has come off as creepy to some people. (Considering the characters I'm writing about, I can kinda see why, though), but the stuff that's supposed to be creepy hasn't affected people. Hmm.

I don't think I've ever wrote something that's dark.
I wrote a story about a homeless girl making friends with another homless boy, them promising to run away to this fairytale city, him getting kidnapped by fairies, her taking this huge journey through these huanted woods to find him, and discovering he was being held by the faeries in their fairytale city which was actually dark and empy. And there was a pedophile is the very first chapter. Does that count?

Most of my friends think that anything I write after my mom, friend and uncle died is dark. Before their deaths, I used to write sappy and naive romantic comedies. I haven't written anything borderline cheerful in over 3 years.
Now I write "dark" stories about people dying in the most horrific ways possible, being manipulated horribly, and more sensitive topics. It's almost like my angst and depression leaked into my stories.

My stuff is really dark I mean I write horror so it's supporsed to be. People die horrible deaths, the main character sees horrible things that are both real and in her head, she even does horrible things without meaning to, bad things happen to everyone. I mix a little comedy in there though and break up the darkness for a little while, my characters are happy sometimes.
