You probably wouldn't believe this was done on purpose. Near as we can tell though, this was all done on purpose, it just didn't turn out the way we'd wanted.
But I'm getting ahead of myself, trying to figure out where to begin. If I were to show you the mathmatics and scientific documention that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that 'magic' is real, would you believe me? Or can you simply accept it when I say that there are layers of realities, as shown by string theory, and not all wave forms of energy pass through all layers of reality in the same manner. Chemical reactions, electrical conduction, arcanic coherance, each of these works ever so slightly different on different layers of reality.
The Elves claim they were the first to discover this, and it's true their world is quite saturated with 'magic', but we can't all agree that the Elves were first. It's possible it was the Dragons... I'm getting ahead of myself again.
Some five years ago China devised a means to harness the energy within our dimension, and opened a portal in space that would allow them to look through to another dimension. From orbit, it looked every bit like our world, though far less industrialized. What they were looking at, it was discovered later, was Elfhome. This is the Earth that would be, had we more magic. Where humanity discovered that certain materials, when placed in certain shapes, with certain additional energies added, would create distinct effects. By the time we contacted this 'humanity' they had grown nearly immortal through genetic manipulation and advanced medicinal 'technology'.
Not that we were exactly lax in that sort of advancement, but the different laws of physics allowed for 'technological' advancement at different speeds. Thus, while elves may live ten times longer than a human, with the added benefits that such health would bring(perfect eyesight, incredible hearing, excellent reflexes, increased strength and stamina, rapid healing) it was found that metalworking was all but unknown to them. Metal, after all, short circuted magic by being a conductor of energy besides just electricity. Ferrous metals, and particularly charged magnets, were downright anti-magical, sucking up the power in the area until another magnetic field could discharge it.
And it seemed that the Elves had already contacted and made close ties with another reality, Trollhome. In worlds where the magical energy was prominate, certain cavern systems would naturally create the portal to another reality. And as such, the Elves and Trolls met, formed alliances, treaties, and of course more often than not, wars.
They're only human after all.
Additional dimensions have been catalogued, but as yet contact with them has not led to the full open door policy as it has with Elfhome. Now is the time of exploration and adventure, the time when Elfhome has set aside a small part of one of their unwanted and mostly unused continents(we would call it North America), allowing people from Earth to visit, bringing with them their fresh and interesting culture as well as goods and technologies unheard of on Elfhome. Colleges have established conclaves of scientists, while elven adepts visit and learn of Earth.
This is the time when we found the Keepers... vast sapient computer systems 'evolved' from random deposits of minerals throughout the rock strata, spread over multiple dimensions through the naturally forming rifts and utilizing numerous energies, making them an inhuman intelligence bound to one location.
And fortunately, this was long before we needed to turn to the Keepers to defend ourselves from those... who came from Outside...

Known dimensions and what they are notable for:
Earth
Low magical level, but as near as we can tell average everything else. Caste system utilizes educational level rather than physical traits, and as such the specialized castes such as military or rulers seem to suffer from the homoginization, while the general populace as a whole enjoys a higher standard of living. Known as “Menhome” by the Elves, though they pronounce it more like Miðgarðr.
Notable castes include the Student, Physicist, Doctor, Army Ranger, Politician and the Retired.
Elfhome
High magical level, slightly lower radiation, and thus mutational level, so only a few unintelligent life forms have adapted to the use of the magic saturation, leaving it primarily as a toy of the intelligent 'elves'. Their society uses a caste system built around genetic tampering, leading to a more rigid society that is less open to development. As such, many of their educational castes believe they are stagnating.
Notable castes include the Dwarf(physically smaller and bred for labor), Highelf(roughly human, tending towards longer life), and Darkelf(bred for special ops military service).
Trollhome
Mid level magical energy, but notably higher radiation level means that more of the creatures here seem to be magical. The lower ambient magical level also means that the Trolls have working technology at approximately steam engine level. Electricity is known, but poorly harnessed, as magical properties interfere. Due to the higher mutation levels in their population, the Trolls have been able to adapt themselves through eugenic breeding programs(both intentional, and unintentional as certain tribes separate from the main kingdoms and evolve in their own way). As such, Trollhome has the most diverse population, striking a suitable middle ground between humans and elves
Notable castes include the Goblin(a servant lower class), the Orc(military), the Royal(who appear mostly Human/Elven and are the ruling caste) and the Ogre(anthropologists are still trying to work this one out, they seem to be ‘rare and honored laborers’).
Drakken
Primarily uncontacted and unexplored, though the notation "here there be dragons" seems to be quite literal, as in this dimension, through whatever forces, the dinosaurs did not die out, leading to intelligent 'reptilian' life.
