The early 1950s were a strange time for the world. Following the second Great War, all those places affected were picking up the pieces, while those unaffected lived on and basked in the glow of victory. Undoubtedly the place most torn apart by this war was the formerly-Nazi-occupied Germany, which was split down the middle by a wall – the east and the west, Communism and Capitalism. Neither side faired very well – though the eastern side had much more than their fair share of horror stories to tell.
But it was 1952 when something wholly strange occurred. Nobody knows how it happened, or where they came from. But along the fringes of countries, villages began losing contact with the rest of the world. No radio signals were picked up and the fate of those within were blotted out of the public mind – until, that is, it began happening with much more frequency, and all of the signs seemed to be moving in towards more populated areas.
The first sign of a titan by those who were able to survive was told in an account by a group of casual sailors stationed in Namibia in March. Their account was harrowing, and they were only able to allow a small number of people onto their ship before they fled back to Nigeria. They described the titans as massive, humanoid creatures with inconceivable strength and disturbing deformities that ate humans. It didn’t take long for other countries to come forth with their own accounts of the same thing, and flee to central areas with whatever they could carry, building towering walls out of materials from abandoned buildings and whatever else they could muster up.
Though communication and travel is sparse due to the titans, everyone knows this: There are seven strongholds of humanity left. One in Europe using its split down the middle between east and west as a basis, one in Africa, two in Asia, two in North America and one in South America. Each are stronger than any building previously known to man, and each have all the weapons they could muster, both civilian and otherwise, to keep from being devoured by titans. Even some of the innermost pockets have been recreated underground, to keep more people safe. Still, after the events of 2048, they can’t be blamed for still fearing these monsters.
The European sector was built not only as a stronghold, but as a beacon to lure titans. They believed that they were the stronger than the African and Asian bases, so they took on that challenge. Pockets jutted forth from the main walls, reinforced by dozens of other pockets behind them – the hope was that titans would be lured to these pockets, where they could be distracted from the main walls and killed by the Garrison soldiers stationed along their edges.
In 2048, however, humanity’s worst fear occurred. A colossal titan, bigger than any they had seen before, attacked the southernmost district of Shiganshina. Many people were able to flee, but more pockets were knocked out – leaving the base with nearly a dozen less pockets of human-safe zones, and hundreds of thousands dead.
Those who were in these southernmost pockets were primarily Germans, who had been pushed out along the wall’s edges, and those who had immigrated from Africa and Asia. Even now, some one hundred years after the fact, all of these people were still heavily discriminated against by the rest of the population – mostly an abundance of Soviets. It didn’t take long for those in power to come up with a solution to the now-overpopulated pockets of the base.
They instituted a mandatory draft for all persons from the districts destroyed by titans. All those able-bodied, age 10-80, were forced into four years of military training to learn how to fight the titans. From this, a new branch of the military was formed – the Scouting Legion, set to travel out beyond the safe pockets of humanity’s strongest base, to engage titans directly and fight for their land back.
We play the newly-trained youth soldiers, who are fighting to regain their homeland in the year 2052, alongside parents, grandparents, and strangers. They don’t know if they’ll make it out alive, or if they’ll ‘win’ – the odds are stacked heavily against them. But they have something more to them that no other soldiers in the past have needed – the will to fight, a longing for their homes back, revenge, and undying, uncrushable hope for humanity.
