"Sometimes more" she shrugged "A pack a day about I'd say" she said flinging the last of her cigarette to the ground "Why?" She chuckled.

"Geeze. That's just a lot." He yawned, petting Aurora. "I'm thinking about heading back in..."

Natalie shrugged. "Probably- I've got an early start."
"Why don't you just, use those magical detective skills and work it out, Alphonse." Mary was leaning heavily on one of the bed frames by now.

Poe strode into the conservatory, looking around. The place was somewhat decaying, the fountains dry, the reflection pool in need of cleaning out the algae and the plants either in need of pruning or watering. Or both at the same time. The garden outside had always been more of a concern than this small section for sheltered greenhouse plants, leaving many of them as skeletal hands clawing at the glass.
Seeing no children here, only how dark it was getting outside thanks to the expansive glass windows, he mounted the twisted iron stairwell attached to a catwalk that allowed one to overlook the greenhouse. It connected with a balcony and the 'widow's walk' on the roof of this wing of the house.
"CAW!" The raven cried out, having found it's arch nemesis in Aurora and fluttering nearby. Poe looked up.
"Mister Stark, Miss Grace!" Poe shouted up, his voice not getting particularly loud as he failed to put all that much emotion into it. Still, on a quiet night with only the faint sound of piano playing to be heard, it should have been enough. "Best the two of you head to your rooms. It's getting late." Poe instructed, waving across the way to them. "I would like to get an early start on the morning Mister Stark, so I hope you find yourself rested."
Gazing over at them from this different vantage point he thought he saw something else. A dark shape on the rooftop. He nodded and muttered to himself. "And I now have a job for Miss Ellis, when she's done with her punishment." He would continue on, making the walk through the dorm rooms to see who was still missing.

He stood up, holding Aurora and going into Hill House once more, laughing at Poe beneath them and sending off a "Yes, Sir!" He sett the cat down and waved at Melody. They would both be aware of the music drifting through the halls.
"Night.... I'll see you tomorrow!"
The way back seemed longer than he remembered, the hallways stretching and doors leading off a different way than he was thinking they had. The first door he turned down that usually led to the boys dormitories instead lead to a brick wall, and the second he'd tried led to a small, empty closet. The third, however, led him to a spacious, dimly lit room. Shelves towered leagues above his head, disappearing into dark shadows. The sound of babbling water echoed through the room, coming from a standing fountain surrounded by sofas. A large stack of books were strewn nearby the nook.
He moved in further, glancing around what he assumed to be some sort of library. The pile of books were interesting, some painted faces popping out at him from the depths, words scrawled all down the spines, descending.
He sat down next to it, taking out books from the pile, oblivious to what prowled deep in the shadows around him.
The Water-Babies : Charles Kingsley. "Once upon a time there was a little chimney-sweep, and his name was Tom...." Blue cover. He set this off to his side, by his hip.
Alice in Wonderland : Lewis Carrol. "Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, 'and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice 'without pictures or conversation?....'" Red cover. This was set off somewhere by his crossed knee.
'Moby Dick : Herman Melville' - "Call me Ishmael. Some years ago - never mind how long precisely - having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world." - was set with the blue, and 'Ethan Frome : Edith Wharton' - "I had the story, bit by bit, from various people, and, as generally happens in such cases, each time it was a different story." - was set with the red, and that set off a series of piles as he started looking through the books, one by one.
Then he came to a book larger than the rest, bound in rough, dark leather. There was no lettering - either on the side or the front or back, and the edges of the inside pages were etched in gold like those of the family bibles he grew up with. He moved to open it, the pages catching, locking tightly. His brow furrowed in concentrated confusion, and with some force he wrenched open the pages.
The lights went out, the fountain stopped bubbling, and the music that filled the library and the hallways stopped with a cacophonous murmur.
Johanna was drifting off when the sudden stopping of the music drove her back into the waking world, bolting upright on her bed, heart racing as if she'd just woken up from a nightmare. She stood up quickly, looking down the pitch blackness of the corridor.
"Eu? Nat? What the hell is going on?" She asked, her voice breathless and already in a panic.
"My candles went out too," Angel piped up, coming out of her room. "How's that possible?"
Mary would notice, perhaps, that the lights flickered in the infirmary - nothing too bad, but the lights still remained sanctioned to work. She would however definitely hear the sudden, cautious voice of Jane as she stood out from the infirmary, knocking quickly.
"Mary? Mary, are you alright in there?"

There was a loud thud, as Natalie slipped off the wall. She hadn't managed to go to bed yet, but the sudden black-out had startled her and caused the slip. "What the hell- power cut or something?"
"I'm just dealing with something in the clinic, I'll be out in five!" Mary gently sponged the blood off her legs, her cheekbone already coated with concealer. "What's the matter?"
Lilith rested her hands on her lap, eyes closed. Someone had found the book. She felt it ripple through the house. Smiling gently, she rose from her seat, feeling no strain at maintaining her form anymore. "I think it's time to go and play, Amanda. I have some things to attend to right now." She kissed the little girl on her forehead, before crouching down to her. "I'm not going to be going away anymore, little one. I'll be with you forever, now." She smiled softly at her little sister. "Why don't you tuck up in my bed, when you get tired, and we'll share a bed for a while? Just as a treat." She stroked her sister's hair. "I just need to visit the bad man first, now that I'm starting to feel better."

Eulalia did her damnedest to ignore the conversation outside, focusing on the soft melodies of the piano to drown it out. She sighed, remembering fond memories of her family, a smile growing on her face.
The sudden disappearance of the piano, and then the power out going out. The lights disappeared from everywhere, and with it most of her ability to see. "Anyone?" She called out, stumbling out of her room.

"Mercy take our souls for we shall see none in this life. Howard were you just not paying attention?" Poe mourned as he strode down the hallway in the darkness, slow enough that he wouldn't hurt himself. He knew roughly where he was, and that the hallway shouldn't have anything he'd stumble over. Still, one never knew in this house.
He paused when he heard a door open and a stumbling sound followed by a voice asking "Anyone?" it took him a moment to identify the voice, since he had little to see by.
"Miss di Adessi." Poe said, putting out a hand at either her shoulder height, or head height, so he didn't stumble into her as he tried to walk past. "I fear that a breaker switch might have failed, and our lights are out." That ignored that even candles and probably the fireplace went out as well. "Perhaps it would be best if you go back to bed? We should have this resolved by the morning." One way or another. "I need to check on the other children, they're probably just as worried as you are." And at least one of them was likely missing, maybe more, but that wasn't his job to worry about.

Aurora swung her paw at the crow in protest of it's existence. Rolling her eyes at Poe Melody turned to return to the dormitories the calming music drew Melody through the window lazily following Ryan towards the dormitories. Stopping to scoop up Aurora who seemed to be very ready to go to bed. The hallway seemed to be different, didn't there used to be a door there? Maybe not she said shrugging her shoulders it wasn't something that stood out too much in her mind and then the lights around her went out. Trying to spot a candle of light, and there was none. "Hello?" she called out hoping to hear someone.

Johanna rushed to Natalie, going to make sure she was okay, still very audibly freaking out herself.
Angel moved into the hallway further, instinctively grabbing the wall and shaking her head.
"Something's not right. I think it's more than just a power outage, but what..."
Amanda grinned at her sister and nodded, phasing out and through the wall as Lilith left the room.
"Are the lights not out for you?" Jane called in, pressing herself to the door. "It's all very strange - the fires are out.... Mary, I'm worried -"
In the darkness, Ryan found his eyes adjusting quickly, alert. He held the book tightly to his chest, glancing around. The shadows shifted to and fro, the book cases, the sofas, the pile and the fountain all seeming to be pushed away from him inch by inch, stranding him. But, after all, perhaps it was just a trick of the light -
The hair on the back of his neck raised. He shut his eyes, and stopped breathing.
Two things were sure, now:
One, something was behind him, and -
Two, it was blocking the door.
He could hear it breathing, hear it paw at the floor, waiting, watching for him to make a move, to notice its existence, like a sick bandit in the night. He let his eyes half-open slowly, to dart around frantically.
There was another door. It stood like a beacon across the room, through rows of shelves, the only way out.
He didn't even give himself enough reaction time to think about what he was doing - book clenched to his chest he started full-sprint. Whatever was behind him joined in to follow, and the house itself shook with its force.
Something growled ahead - he swerved to the left, ducking into a second corridor of bookshelves. The more he ran the more presences he was beginning to sense. Books dropped from far above, the cabinets wavering, knocking them down. He skipped over book after book, landing on one, twisting about and slamming into the book case. He'd barely processed it, his feet still running down the corridor.
Something was above him now, or was it below? The presences filled in from all directions, eyes with teeth bared for blood following after him.
He rounded one corner and then another several shelves down, trying to change direction as much as possible to throw these off - but he feared it was only throwing himself off more as he felt himself hitting mantle after mantle, the halls inching closer and closer together as he grew so near the door he could practically taste it.
Another book fell, clipping his shoulder and staying on longer than a book should before he whacked it with the book he was holding, succeeding in it flying off - as he smashed right into the door face-first. He struggled with the knob.
"No - No please-"
The door flew open in front of him, letting him fall out with it and into the main hallways. He stumbled back to his feet, running further down the hallway despite his chest burning in fiery protest. He heard the door click behind him, but the presences still followed as he tripped his way down a set of stairs. Chills ran down his neck and back, and he could swear he felt claws tear at his shirt. He sped his way further, and rounded another corner.

"Something's not right. I think it's more than just a power outage, but what..." Eulalia ignored Poe's request, stumbling past the man to try and find the others- mostly by following Johanna's voice. "Johanna?" She called out, walking around cautiously. "Are you alright?!"

"Rather than stumbling about in the dark..." Poe said as Eulalia... well... stumbled about in the dark past him. "Perhaps it would be best if we all joined hands and performed a role call to see who all is here?"
He got a sinking feeling that this wouldn't work. He was loathed to put a more authoritarian tone to his voice. He'd always hated that, from his father and from the commanders during his schooling. Shout loud enough and everyone will respect you for the violence you commit. Still, he had to admit that it was an effective means of getting attention, assuming one had at least a modicum of authority to leverage with it.
Silently he trusted, or perhaps prayed, that somebody else would deal with the actual issue. He had his suspicions as to what had actually caused the lights to go out, a last scared reaction of reality against something that would pierce it's heart. Someone had found something they should not have, and the monsters would be hungry and hunting for them now, because they knew that the forbidden knowledge could be used to torment even the departed souls and destroy this house and those who haunted it's halls.

"Yeah- I'm fine, I only slipped." Natalie brushed herself down, before reaching out to grab Johanna. "It's fine- it's only a power cut or something. Just- Angel, can you relight your candles?" Natalie slid a comforting arm around Johanna's shoulders. "We'll be okay."
Mary wrapped the freshly opened wounds in gauze and bandage, before coming out of the clinic, going over and opening the door to let Jane in, looking up and down the corridor at the darkness before closing it behind her. "My lights are fine, for now. There was a flicker, but that- well, that's quite normal in here." She helped the woman into a chair in her office, one of the huge wingback armchairs besides her fireplace, which also still flickered quite soundly. "Seems the protections of this infirmary are holding strong, for now."
The walk to the stables was far more pleasant with her usual form back, Lilith had always found. She didn't feel the bitter chill in the night air and more, or the moderate breeze. She passed into the stables, though it took some effort- the book had not long been opened, and she was still recovering power. She waked silently around the structure, her presence inducing wild excitement in the beasts enclosed there. She wandered down the line, purveying the selection before her, then stopping in front of a dark, savage hound-like creature. She slowly manipulated the latch, lifting it and letting the door open, freeing the beast within, who shot off towards the house, screaming and growling in the night. She smiled gently to herself, before looking around. Time to find her favourite victim. She knew he would know she was here. The sensation will have grown to stabbing migraine pain by now, at least she hoped. She walked further in, her form dark, smoky and seemingly insubstantial.

Taking a few paces forward using the wall as balance she could hear what sounded like Ryan running, what could he be running from? Aurora jumped from Melody's lap and started hissing and growling. Looking down at Aurora, Melody was confused that was odd Aurora never acted that way unless something was seriously up. It seemed like it was just your average power outage to her. Continuing to follow the sounds of Ryan cautious to not run into any walls or even better yet find herself face first on the floor.

Johanna wrapped her arms around Natalie in reciprocation, starting to calm down.
"-Here, Eulalia, we're over here!" She called, and listened to Poe.
"I'm here," Angel replied to him, going to sit near the group after unsuccessfully trying to relight her candles. "Angel. And Natalie and Johanna are here, and Eulalia's here, and you're here, Mister LeRennet. We're still missing damn near every staff member and three students."
Jane gladly fell into the chair, watching Mary.
"Thank God for that. The lights are off everywhere else, the fires are gone... I hope the children are alright, one should have been on her way to see me after the... events at dinner, but she never came up...."
Melody wouldn't get far at all before she was nearly toppled over full-force by the younger blonde, who bowled into her and then scrambled quite a bit before starting off again. Whatever it was, he still felt it right behind them.
Lilith would find de Sade in the stables, sitting at he edge of his bed and still in full regalia, swirling a stiff drink in one hand and holding his temple with the other. As the creatures he had began to grow more frenzied, he cast his eyes darkly upwards, a scowl coming to his face. He downed his drink, moving to stand up - as one such monster burst from its holding area and made a beeline through the door and towards the mansion.
"I know you're here," His voice was even lower than it had been with the students, but airier than the usual growl, almost coming from somewhere else. He hit the section of counter partitioning himself and his sleeping quarters off from the rest of the stables, moving past it and going towards the weapons counter. "And you know I'm not afraid."

"And which child would that be? Only, Mr. de Sade informs me that he believes our resident hellish ghost-child has returned." Mary sighed slightly. "Given the circumstances, I'm inclined to believe him."
"Shouldn't we maybe be checking, y'know, the infirmary or something? Dr. Godwin said it was safe there." Natalie shrugged, holding Johanna close. "I don't know about you guys, but that's where I'd go."
Lilith prowled towards him, a deep, echoing bass sound joining her voice, which seemed to warp and morph as she spoke. "It's been a while, monsieur." She came closer, releasing a long, oozing, faceless serpentine creature as she passed it. "Thankyou for caring so well for my pets in my absence, but I daresay I shan't be requiring your services any longer."

Jane stared at her.
"Miss Reynolds.... Again? But I - I thought we..." She sighed, shaking her head.
Johanna nodded quickly.
"Yes down there, Dr. Godwin told us it was safe - maybe she and the others are down there?"
The boy gave out a small cry as she held onto him, feeling the presences wash over him and continue down the hallway. His lungs felt like they wouldn't work, though he kept breathing, and in reply he only managed a small whimper before falling to his knees, gasping for air that felt frozen.
De Sade watched the serpent slither past, nonchalantly looking at his weapons.
"Yes, yes. You've come to 'boot me out' for the 'final' time, is that it?" He turned back towards where he assumed she'd be, crossing his arms. "Tell me, what rod should I use this time? After all the last one didn't seem to work like we thought it would."

"I thought as much. If she doesn't appear for breakfast, I'd suggest 'Elinor Reynolds' may be our most likely suspect as her route back in." Mary sighed. "We did our best against a spirit we don't understand. I thought silver would be enough..." She trailed off. "No doubt, if it really is here, it will have made a bee line for the stables. It'll feel it has unfinished business, as usual."
Lilith rolled her eyes. "Oh, of course. Please, start slashing away with your silver swords again, throw your salt sticks at me." She added a little pressure and influence, only slight, to test her own power more than inflict damage, trying to increase the thudding ache in his head, and trying to pull him away from the weapon racks. "We know exactly how well that went last time."

Jane nodded.
"Dear god. We were worse enough these past few years - now we're adding her back in the mix.... If it is her, it'll make sense. Dinner was rightly awful tonight."
De Sade grimaced, tongue flicking over his teeth as he tried to concentrate past the pain. He gripped the counter, bending forward to look towards the middle of the room.
"Seemed like it worked, though, didn't it. You haven't managed to get back on for three years now. And why is that? Where did you go, Lilith? I'm assuming back to the hell you came from, but then again."
Melody would feel him freezing and shivering underneath her arms. He rested his forehead on her shoulder, still attempting to breathe.
"What the fuck... what the fuck...."

"Well, we can handle it, my love." Mary came over and slipped her arm around Jane, perching on the arm of the chair. "We've expelled her before, and we can do it again, no doubt. We'll just, have to be inventive. And, be ready for the worst." She kissed her head gently. "Perhaps it will be a blessing that you are in here, and not the gardens for a while."
Lilith laughed, his pain feeding her. "Biding my time, of course. Preparing for my return to my home." She pushed open the gate to a stall, holding a scaled, bipedal, eyeless creature, which screeched, turning towards de Sade. "Go on, sweetheart. It's been a while since we played with Alphonse. He wasn't as bitter, then- must be to do with how his fiancée left him last time I was here." The creature, with fangs dripping with go corrosive saliva, following the scent trail towards the man. "How things change, in three long years. I see sweet Mary already has another lover." The creature lunged, screeching, jaws open, towards de Sade. "And so, you force her to satisfy you- not only that, to fear you." Lilith tightened her grip on his mind, inflicting a little more pain- as much as she could manage for now. "How unpleasant."

Jane smiled, resting further into Mary's arm.
"Perhaps. If we all work together, then maybe - " She stopped. "The children, they're upstairs. I hope they're alright, that nothing's happened to them...."
The monster would find a pen knife jabbed down its throat then, de Sade barely even broadcasting his reaction before it happened. He grabbed the monster, wrenching the pen out of its squealing mouth and tossed it back towards Lilith.
"She hasn't left me." He replied, clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth, pretending not to feel the spreading pain to his cheekbone. "She has no other." His voice was growing less calm and cool, becoming more unhinged and soft as he went on, switching quickly with each phrase. Whether or not that was in response to the pain or not would be hard to tell. "She doesn't fear m- yes - I do not for- things are no diff- she still has my ring." His voice gave way then, and he was against the counter, eyes shut momentarily. Sweat dripped down his face, and his breathing had grown heavier than he thought. He looked up to her and his eye twitched.
He was drawn up as a puppet on a string, realigning himself with cracks of his spine and neck, standing now powerful at his fullest height. He drew out a thick poker from beneath the counter, looking it over.
"Iron. It's not particularly like silver, but it still works against you now, doesn't it, Lilith?" His voice was back to stiff, powerful gravel. "And as such, if I were to, say... force something like this into your host body...."

Mary got up, stroking Jane's hair. "Then I'll fetch them. They can sleep in here tonight. Just, you stay here, alright?"
"You'd be so lucky," she spat at him. Cold iron, of course he would move to that. She tried to press more pain into his heard, but quickly lost her hold on him, and her black, shadow form started to regain its visibility. "That isn't the kind of thing I simply leave lying around." She began backing off, heading for the yard. "Not like Mary does with that ugly, silver ring you gave her. No doubt it isn't solid, either." She sneered in her voice as she left. "Your 'fiancée' is a cheat, Alphonse. Please, do keep up your constant violation of her. Perhaps you'll kill her before long." Her voice went cold. "It'll save me a job." Lilith slammed closed the doors, pausing, before sprinting back towards the house, fully aware she needed to get away- she needed to find the book bearer, and she needed to get to them first this time.

Jane watched her, moving almost to stand.
"I really don't want you to get hurt, Mary.... Please, at least be safe."
De Sade watched her go, still holding the poker to his chest. The frenzy died down, and he slowly moved towards the door. He discovered, perhaps too late, that he was talking to himself.
"-She's lying, right?" This voice was mild, stationed itself at the front of his mouth, He responded with a voice choked back down his throat, "Of course she is, you dolt. But she - Listen to me - if you've dared to hurt - She's LYING. There's no cheating, there's no anything. She's lying.[/b]" Silence fell as the man came into the gardens, stopping. After a moment, the lighter voice spoke again. "If she dies... if you kill her - Put it out of mind. We've work to do."

"I will be fine, Jane, now stay here." Mary headed towards the door, but stopped, hearing the screeching howl and scratching claws padding past. "I...perhaps, it would be better to wait, just a few minutes..." At least, she thought to herself, at least that suggests the defences of this room are still sound for now.
Natalie sat on the bed, arm still around Johanna. "So, are we going to the infirmary?"

Jane sat back down nodding. "It's for the best... I hope the safety grows for the others."
Johanna nodded.
"Yes. Yes - Mister LeRennet, let's get down there."
Ryan let out several deep breaths, calming down though still freezing and, if she could see him, pale. He took a moment and pulled slightly away.
"There's something - there's something here..." He stopped. "Where are we?"

"I hope they can find their way here- I told them of the safety this afternoon..." Mary came back in, sitting in the chair opposite Jane. "I just hope they remember."
"So, we just go right out of here, down the stairs, right at the bottom of the stairs, down that corridor and then it's the second on the left, right?" Natalie shrugged. "Or was it left at the stairs, and first on the right?"
