"But, I mean, come on, man." Bryci said, looking at Waylon, smiling with a fair show of teeth, laughing slightly. "I'm like, really... really fucking tanned. You didn't think that I might be a bit racially inclined?"
"Yeah. Just think of it as a visual means to guess someone's heritage. I mean, I'm not sure about my family history, but I know that they were originally from somewhere like Mexico or Spain, somewhere they have the same skin tone as me and racial similarities." Bryci said, looking at Wyn. "Which is why it makes it hard for us to identify you Quarians, since you all just wear the suit."
"Well, I mean, when you talk to your family, just ask them. Maybe they can remember their family history." Bryci said, standing up to go over and squeeze the girl into a hug. "It'll be alright, Wyn-Wyn. Maybe you'll perk up a bit when we get on Omega and you can talk to your family."

Elam chuckled some more as Wyn playfully jabbed him, hardly more than a nudge from the featherweight Quarian. On the subject of the Captain, Elam nodded. "I was just as surprised as you. Not sure what exactly triggered it, but he did it all his own."
Elam listened along to the conversation, glad to take a load off his shoulders and ease up a little, at least in such a friendly manner of banter. At Waylon's silent insistence, he clarified his geographical origins, if that's where the conversation was headed.
"Well, yeah. Like Waylon said, my ancestors came from the African continent, but we weren't always there. For the past few hundred years or so, they've been from North America. The earliest record was something like . . . three hundred years ago, in the United States of America."

"I'm just glad both of you are okay," Wyn said, "When the explosion happened, I feared the worst."
She smiled, "Man all I know is the ships my parents are from, the Kottik and the Raaya. I mean 300 years ago we were on the homeworld, but I'd like to know where. Not that it really matters I guess... I mean even if I know the name of where I come from, it'll mean nothing to me. I'm never gonna see it."
She looked at Elam, "Where exactly are you from? I mean your ancestors come from America, but do you too? I mean Asher was, and you sound a lot different then him."

"Hey guys. I'm not too late to join in this little party, am I?" Kryseis inquired as she poked her head into the engine room, her varren mimicking her actions as he poked his own head into the opening as well.

"Come in Krys." Wyn said, "And as long as Pistachio doesn't mess anything up he can too."
She looked around at all the people in the engine room, "All we're missing is Liam and the Captain. What is it about this place that makes you all wanna come here?"

Liam hadn't been able to sleep, and had thus been wandering around the Balrog. Following voices, he came, like Krys, into the engine room, to see everyone in there. He grinned.
"I'm not either, am I?"

"...Come in Liam..." Wyn sighed, "Not sure if there's room though."

Kryseis made herself at home beside Elam, with Pistachio moving to drape himself across her lap. Due to his size, he ended up draping himself across part of Liam's lap, too. "Hmm...because it's roomy?"

"Well compared to the other places in this ship, I guess." Wyn said, "Fun fact this room is about the size of my entire living quarters on the Qwib Qwib. My parents and me had to share a living space this big. Maybe thats why I miss them so much, I literally was around them all the time before I left."

"We're just talking about how Wyn is a racist. Told us herself." Bryci said, smile ever present on her round, warm face. She crossed her arms over her chest, leaning on her spot next to the half-dressed Waylon.
"I don't feel comfortable in her presence." She said, nudging Waylon.
"Maybe you should just check up on them when you're on Omega. It shouldn't take that long, and you'll feel better after it. Just being able to talk to them, I mean." She said, leaning on her elbows, which rested on her knees. "They miss you and they'll just want to be see you for once, or at least hear you."

"You do realize out of all of us here, I probably get the most racist shit, right?" Wyn said, "You guys aren't the ones who the Captain has to pay people off to actually be let in places on Omega, cause some of them have "No Quarian" policies. Or have been called "clanless" by a Volus, and constantly having it hammered into you that you don't belong anywhere."
"You know you're right? Isn't their a human phrase thats like "Its better to beg for forgiveness then ask for permission"? The Captain has bigger things to worry about, I'm not even gonna ask. I'm gonna fucking talk to my parents."

"Wyn... are you homesick?" Liam was still trying to catch up with everything, his brow furrowing as he looked to her.

Wyn sighed, "A bit. Okay yeah I am. I'm super homesick. I'll be fine though. I'm an adult, I shouldn't need my parents anymore anyway."

"You're never too old for them, Wyn." He gave her a genuinely concerned smile. "And I'm sure they're scared for their baby girl... how long has it been since you've spoke to them?"

"A few days ago... but before then I went 4 years without speaking to them. And it was only my mother I talked to a few days ago, and I really wanna talk to Papa. And Mama's voice made it sound like she worried I was dead, and I just... "

Liam stared at her for a moment.
"You're going to check in on your parents one way or another." He said, with a tone that meant no nonsense. "Do you know how terrified they must be? You're their only child, aren't you? And you care about them? They desserve to know you're alive and well. And what if something bad had happened to you while you were gone? Or what if something bad had happened to one of them?" He stopped his tangent, letting out a low breath. "Please, for me, promise you're going to check in with them."

Wyn hung her head in shame. "Yeah I'm their only child. Most Quarians are. I... okay Liam. I promise. I just don't want them to find out what I'm doing and to think badly of me."
She thought back to what Asher tried to do. If he had gotten his way, her parents would have had no idea she'd been sold in slavery. The thought terrified her.

"I haven't contacted my parents in years." Kryseis stated, her voice completely level. "Don't get me wrong; I didn't have a falling out with them or anything, it's less personal than that."
A long pause.
"I do miss them, though."

"Oh God, have we reached that point in the conversation now where we all have family issues that we like to talk about?" Bryci asked, curling her knees up into her chest as she sat upright, resting her head on her knees slightly. She looked at all the others slightly.
"Are we all only children? None of us have brothers or sisters or anything?" She said, looking around. "Looks like someone, namely Kry, should go to Omega with Wyn and call their parents as well."

Kryseis heard it but did not bring it up, simply petting her varren as it napped on her lap.

Even outside the Captain's blast-shielded doors, the sounds of a struggle could be heard, albeit muffled. Not physical, but one-sided and dangerous, all the same.
"You've bitten off more than you can chew, Caligulus. I don't care if it was an accident, or if you're lying to live, I want results - blowing up the entire damned job was not what I had in mind."
"Now, Aria, let's consider this rationally--"
"--you seem to have been so busy being the opposite of rational that you've caught yourself in your own petty web."
"I can't say your information on this subject is entirely valid--"
"I'm awfully busy, Val. I don't have time for your bullshit, and right now, neither do you."
"Aria, darling, a broker of your caliber is much better than this. Why don't we both rise to the occasion, and do what we both do best? A . . . proposition may fall kindly open you."
A pause. A frustrated sigh from the other end of the conversation.
"I presume you have something in mind?"
"Oh, anything, my dear! Credits, guns, drugs--"
"I should have your scaly cock twisted off for that. You insult me, Val. Do I look like a fucking duct rat to you?"
"Aria, darling, I believe we're coming to an impasse at the most inopportune of times. You, my dear, are the one with the high card; is it not you who should speak their mind?"
More silence.
"You're on probation, Caligulus. You and the rest of your mangy curs. You'll be punching in under my payroll, until this whole thing gets unfucked."
"It would be an honor, my dear."
"Spare me, Caligulus. I must ask you to refrain from doing anything too devious while you act in my name, I have enough of a pest problem as it stands now."
"But of course, Aria. You have my--"
The comm link had already been disconnected.
Val Caligulus stood with Aria T'Loak on his left with a spade, and the entire goddamn Alliance on his right with a shovel, and just at this very moment, he had crawled out of his own grave.
There was no way he would ever try crawling back in.

As Val was having this conversation, the "mangy curs" in the engine room were continuing theres, "I think we all are only children. Thats kind of weird, the only person I've met on this ship who ever talked about having a sibling was Asher. My parents would of had another kid if they could of, but you know Flotilla rules and all," Wyn sighed getting up from her bed as the engine began making noise.
"Excuse me, pardon me." she said as she pushed past a few of the crew members, "I have to you know, do the shit the Captain pays me to do." She made it to the engine module and began adjusting some controls.

"No thanks Liam. I got it under control anyway." Wyn said, "Just got a bit overheated, nothing I can't handle." She pressed a few buttons on the console and then turned to face Liam.
"What do you mean by 'had' a son... is he... you know?" She hung her head ruefully, "I... I'm sorry."

"Oh Keelah... I'm so sorry, Liam. No wonder you want me to talk to my parents... He might have left Earth, and maybe thats why you couldn't find him. ...Why did he leave?" Wyn asked curiously, "Unless you dont wanna say."

"God only knows..." The man sighed, suddenly drooping down, clasping his hands tightly. "I asked myself often why..." he fell silent for a few moments, reasons ringing through his head, before taking in a deep breath, and continuing, "The only one that truly made sense was that he went searching for information on his mother... she died when he was small, he never knew her, and I never thought to tell him much..."

"Well if my father had kept information about my mother from me, I'd want to find it out too. Thats something I think a child should be entitled too... especially if they never knew the parent." Wyn realized how bad that sounded, "But uhh... I'm only saying this from a child's perspective, I've never had a kid of my own, and at this rate probably never will. And I come from a family where everyone is very open about things. It might just be a cultural difference."
