Long, long ago…
“Ready?”
Once upon a time…
“Aim!”
In a faraway kingdom…
“Fire!”
All of these, introductions to fairytales, fables, and stories of yore- the works of the Brothers Grimm, Perrault, and Hans Christian Andersen. Phrases etched deep into our minds at a young age to make all these stories not seem so bad. People get mauled by bears and wolves? No problem! They’re just stories, and stories are just fantasy.
Or are they?
These phrases were invented by the weak-hearted to try to soften reality for children. They were created to make people forget the past, and the truth.
For years ago, the world was very, very different from what we think today. Monsters coexisted with humans, some intermixing, dirtying bloodlines to create new breeds, new creatures. Neither seemed happy with either side, attacking each other for food, clothing, weapons, and medicines. Entire wars broke out, terrible things with some entire races and kingdoms being obliterated. Laws were created, segregating monsters and humans, forbidding relations in between. And that is when, quite literally, all hell broke loose.
A book was created. A horrible book, bound in the flesh of creatures and humans. The book’s pages were blank, at least at first. The book was magical, even at first. Its creator claimed it was magical, that an extremely powerful witch had laid a curse on it before she died. He claimed that if a person wrote within it, with their own blood, that whatever they wrote would cease to exist.
And so the book was used for appalling things. A war broke out amongst humans fighting to get their hands on it. The book became so legendary and so necessary that monsters too joined in the fight.
The kingdom this all occurred in was Erendalia, ruled by the benevolent Princess Elysia. With the help of twelve knights, an enchantress, and several monsters, the book fell into her hands. She placed it deep within her dungeons, and vowed to destroy it.
But she didn’t get to it fast enough. Villagers and monsters from all over the world raided the castle, a power struggle occurring. One person reached the book, and one only- the enchantress Motia.
Motia did as the creator had instructed, slitting open her hand and picking up a quill. Dipping it into the dark pools, she began to write out the history of the world thus far. As her hand bled, she grew weaker, woozier. The blood was lessening, and soon she moved down to cut her wrist, letting out more blood.
The book snapped shut as she finished writing, and her world became a flash of white and red.
The monsters, Erendalia, Elysia, the world as it was known then, came to a grinding halt. The world began anew.
As for the book, and of Motia, they were bound together, left in the forest on the marble pedestal the book had been placed on. Through the centuries, as the forest grew, the book became harder and harder to find.
It was found. Make no mistake. It was found by those four men above, for instance. They each read the book, taking what they liked from it to create their stories. The last one was Hans Christian Andersen, and since then, the book has been decaying… one would even say it was dying. Vines have long since grown over the pedestal and the poor binding.
Our story takes place in a small town, named Merriston. It is by all accounts a relatively normal place in the world, resting on the brink between the ocean and the forest. It is prosperous with logging and shipping industries.
There have been… rumors, however. Rumors that have lasted longer than one would expect. Rumors that at night, in the forest, one can hear a voice calling…
…calling…
“Save us.”
In short, we play a group of people who wander into the forest and come across the book. They read it aloud, and soon these tales seem to be coming to life all around them. As they have unleashed the magic, they have unleashed Motia, who agrees to help them get their world back to normal by granting them powers from the book. In return, the simply asks that they find and free the princess Elysia, who is the only one powerful enough to destroy the book once and for all.
Oh, one last thing. Your characters should be based on a fairytale, fable, legend, etc. Whether that means they’re exactly like the character in all ways, or if they just have an affinity for one, is up to you to decide. Have fun!
