A man- a soldier- stood in one of the towers of the base, staring down the three mechs combating the Angelus Aqueous. He sighed, making note of how the kaiju was getting gunned down- but not enough to kill it, despite the masked creature's blue blood splattering about as bullets hit the thing. He smirked as he pulled back from the tower's window slightly.
The man quickly returned, mounting a portable rocket launcher on his shoulder as he crouched down slightly to take aim. He had a single shot to take, and if he was lucky, it would do enough damage to help kill the thing. A cold sweat broke out on the man's face as he took aim in the launcher's scope. His eye focused on the kaiju's 'sweet spot'- a small gap between the right ribs and core of one of the damn things. You hit that with enough force, and it'll bleed out while paralyzed. If he could even shove one of the rips in ever so slightly...
He pulled the trigger, sending off a rocket missile at a quick speed.
The kaiju didn't know what hit it, as the Schwere Waffen's continued to bounce off and knick the creature, as it raised its arm to grab hold of the bullets, it's masked face looking upward towards the source of its annoyance. Suddenly, it felt a surge of pain as a cannonball from another one of those horrible metal things snapped its arm clean off, splattering its blood over a good deal of its immediate surroundings.
The Angelus Aqueous released a high pitched howl of pain, an almost deafening sound to those unfortunate enough to be near it. It didn't even realize the rocket heading directly for the ribs. The area was already bruised from the European machine's efforts. The impact from the rocket cemented its fate- pushing in its rib enough to sever its mobility nerve.
The kaiju was, effectively, dead as it flopped backwards.

Klaxons blaring, Fynn rushed to get to the changing room he had been assigned by Command, quickly organizing himself and undressing to assimilate into his suit, draping the one-color, navy blue jumpsuit over his frame as he clambered to his mech.
Climbing from the outside in through the scaffolding around his frame, Fynn allowed the engineers a moment to disperse, noting how the others had already fired off and into the field while one engineer fixed an optic on his mech.
Sighing, he stood on the dais in the center of the machine, a panoramic room with a raised platform the only notable feature. He took a deep breath. This was something he was used to.
He stepped onto it as the machine seemed to envelop him, head-to-toe, in an almost body suit, comprised of interlocking metal plates and servos which organized the layout of the machine, yet was also suffocating and frightening first off.
When his firing arc launched him into the fray after he had assimilated with his machine, gripping the rifle in his arms, he kept walking, catching the tail end of the fight, watching the monster die. It wasn't the first time he had seen one, seeing them constantly on the surface, clambering and giving him no harm.
Dog Warrior pottered over, one arm holding the rifle as the other lay at his side, looking at it, then the others.
"What do we do with the body?" He asked the others over a unified communications network. "Can't just leave it here."

((You do know by "gun-men" I meant any mechas that were engaging at range(SAL, Schwere Waffen, and any further that came out of the base by that point like Kitter or Rey). Also kinda missed that Trinity was supposed to have a whole one sided sword fight with it, being unable to hit and forced on the defensive, and it was one LEG not arm that the daikaiju lost before finally succumbing to the torso wounds... But since nobody seems to want challenge this, I'm going to roll with it.))
Annastasia's calm and detached voice was still with them. "Disposal teams have been notified. Make certain the creature is no longer a threat. If anyone wishes to help load the transport vehicles with the corpse please remain on the field." Typically the disposal team would carve up the daikaiju... or if it was far enough away from any holdings they would simply leave it to be scavenged by other kaiju. This one however was blocking the runway.
There was a rather long pause as she received new information. "Trinity, SAL, and Schwere Waffen are to be recalled. We need two other pilots to volunteer to perform a quick patrol."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"God damn your kid Jay!" April screeched over the base phoneline. Fortunately it was relatively private, and Jay just gave her a level tone when he replied. "I know that kid was going to try showboating to impress her daddykins, and look at what nearly happened!"
A topographic map of the lake, and more importantly the base in the middle of it, appeared on Jay's desk. The mecha appeared, as did the daikaiju just before it had been felled. A red circle appeared starting at the daikaiju's core and expanding out to quickly become a dome. Flashes of yellow, orange, and red sparked up. Schwere Waffen an orange, Trinity an orange, Zaltonus a yellow, Sal an orange... these marked potential losses, had the core gone critical.
Jay just glared at it, tapped his desk with two fingers and spun the image around, inputting his own commands into the display. Suddenly dozens of red marks popped up as almost certain casualties appeared. The tanks that had moved into place, the people still above ground for that battle... not just the mecha in question(which probably would have survived). Then the image backtracked itself. "Sierra Romeo didn't fire that rocket." Jay said simply.
"Well who did? Her primary weapons are rockets..."
"Came from the wrong angle. Zaltonus gun cameras show SRJWF and the rocket in the same frame. Patty was behind the Angelus Aqueous when it was hit, in the front." Jay said calmly.
"So who fired it?"
"Near as I can tell, one of the conventional crew." Miss Louise finally added.
"Brainless jarheads." April fumed. "It was Grayson wasn't it?" It was always Grayson...
"Airman Grayson was airborne at the time, delaying the creature until Trinity could exit the hangar." His jet still had a full compliment of ammunition too, meaning he hadn't fired anything, just buzzed the creature. "The rocket fired was a ground to air anti-armor round." Miss Louise noted. "Commander Xanthony is already personally investigating matters." Which explained why he wasn't in on the call.
"Enough." Commander Warrens said. His actual rank was more around Marshal, as head of not just this base, but also most of the North American forces. The fact that generally speaking being a mecha pilot was (technically) volunteer(though by this point the person who volunteered you was two generations past) and the highest rank of an entirely different division than the military led the whole rank structure of anywhere that dealt with mecha to be... off kilter to say the least. "Find the man... or woman... who fired that rocket. Put a medal on their chest for bravery." April made a sound but was cut off. "Then send them back down to the city for stupidity. April, pick two of the pilots who sortied, preferably ones who did not see action in this exchange, and have Miss Louise sent them out for a patrol. I do not like suicide bomber daikaiju getting this close to the base. Bring the rest of them back in. Jay, you have mecha to repair and rearm. The pilots can finish their tour, I'll see them in the war room. After that, while it's still fresh in their minds, ask them what they did right on this scramble, and what they did wrong. Anything further?"
"No sir." Jay said, about to hurry to Darrens quarters and swipe the kids bong and stash before April could find them. Jay still wanted to talk to that boy, while April just wanted to punish her new pilot for showing up stoned. The only pilot that she didn't have to treat gently because without them their mecha refused to work. The other two base commanders who were present for this call echoed Jays statement, but not his sentiment or plans, and Warrens closed the call.
Giselle lingered for a bit, watching the cleanup crew as they approached the dead Daikaiju before heading back into the base to report to her superiors.
Slumping his weapon over his shoulder, allowing it to clamp to his back to free up his hands as he crouched over and started to help carefully maneuver the corpse away from the runway, going about it under the directions and assistance of the more well-trained ground crew.
Once he was sure he had assisted in some degree, he reequipped his weapon.
"T-... This is Fynn." He sounded off, unsure as how to approach a military situation. "I'll volunteer, if you need a hand."
"Acknowledged Fynn. Hund Krieger will patrol with an experienced local partner." Annastasia said coldly.
The statement that they had to be experienced and local really did limited the number. Adam in Zaltonus seemed the most obvious answer, since both Zaltonus had already launched, but it was still up for volunteers. It was just that some had been denied a chance to volunteer.
"Phooey." Patty huffed and lowered SRJWF through the open hangar ceiling. Trinity would need to walk in after taking that hit to her wing from the Angelous Aqueous. "Didn't even get to fire anything..."
The Daikaiju corpse was loaded on the transport, typically used for moving mecha about. It was built along the same lines as transports that used to move space shuttles into position, and once loaded started moving away, with people in bio suits already moving to harvest what was useable in the Daikaiju's body. Including "disarming" the red core which most Angelous type Daikaiju had as a potential 'final measure'.
Commander Anderson was waiting for them on the second story catwalk, arms crossed and expression even more cross, as they came in. Or in some cases just turned around and returned to their stations.
Giselle maneuvered her mecha back into its station before deactivating it and climbing down from the cockpit to join Eren and the others on the floor, all the while reassuring her mechanic that she was alright.
The kaiju went down with disappointing ease, much to the annoyance of both the Williams siblings, even if for different reasons. Adam sighed, about to turn back until he heard the request for a local senior pilot to assist Kitter in a patrol. "I'll go ahead and do it!" He offered, a burning passion evident in his voice. The Zaltonus moved forward and farther from the base then.
Maybelle, however, one of the other airborne mecha, the Trinity to be exact, spluttering about in the air with a damaged wing. It was likely to With a sigh of her own, she motioned the angelic giant to fly over to the other machine, grabbing hold of its arm and throwing it over her own shoulder as she arrived.
"I'll guide you into the hanger. Are you feeling okay?" The pilot asked Elizabeth over communications, concern in her voice.
"Confirmed." Annastasia said over the communication channel. "Zaltonus and Hund Krieger, your patrol route has been sent to your onboards." An easily ignorable direction pointer appeared for them and would take them on a rather long spiral about the base.
"Mind if I come along too?" It was a voice of young man crackled over. "I still have most of my fuel, all of my missiles, and an eye in the sky might be all you need."
While the exact shorthand used was different for both Zaltonus and Hund Krieger, the voice was identified as the jet that had stalled, but not properly engaged, the Angelus Aqueous as the mecha had launched. Airman Timothy Grayson, one of the base aces, in as much as he could be an ace when the conventional jets were practically unable to damage daikaiju one on one(though that didn't stop them from landing a 'lucky hit' when used en mass) and useful only in scouting.
~~~~~~~
"Alright children." Miss Anderson said as the pilots were re-gathered in the hangar. "Keep your flight suits on while we go to debriefing. I want everyone to think about how that fight went... and how you could do better in the future. Any questions?"
Patty looked somewhat uncomfortable and raised her hand. She didn't have a flight suit.
For that matter, Darren hadn't even scrambled, his 'mecha' was in another hangar completely.

"...Better?" Marco asked, "The fight was pretty much over by the time I got out there, not much I could have done." He would never usually talk back to Miss Anderson, but he wasn't in the best mood, having forced to launch and then do nothing.

April gave Marco a look and took out a pad. "Mister Salazar... requires faster reaction time for launch. Schedule drills." She muttered, making a note. "Anyone else?" April asked looking over them all.
"Did it occur to any of you that the main hangar only has four exits, which means only four mecha can be launched at a time? That means that a majority of you who rushed to your mecha were superfluous at best, and a distraction to the launch coordination crew at worst. Did none of you trust each other to deal with the threat alone? Do all of you think so low of everyone else here and so highly of yourselves that you're buying into the rockstar mentality so many other Pilots have?" You could practically hear her capitalize the word, which meant it referred to mecha pilots only.
April started walking down the catwalk to the elevator. "Yes, soon enough you will likely be assigned to separate bases, with just you defending your little base over your little city and the meager little farmland around it, and then you'll all be the special little snowflakes you want to be." The venom in her words was probably as bitter as the biohazard acid in the Angelus Aqqueous's core. "But until then you're not special. You're part of a team. My team. I don't need you stepping on each other while you're under me."
She stopped at the elevator and held the door for them. "Well? Come on. Commander Xanthony is looking into events, but I can show you to the briefing room, the war room, and the base commander Marshal Warrens."

Marco was fuming, "You guys could of only asked for a few of us. No one specified who was to go out and who wasn't. I went out cause I thought you needed me, not because I wanted to show off. Cause I know where that attitude will lead me," It was pretty obvious to anyone who knew, what he was referring to. His father who had bought into that "rockstar mentality" and had been killed by a Kaiju trying to be a showoff.
As usual, he'd normally not fight with April, but she'd definitly struck a nerve.

April gave Marco a cold smile, as though letting him know that she'd just struck through whatever armor he thought he had and touched a weak spot. Her smile said that she could dig and drill at that spot all she wanted, and that he was playing right into her hands. "So you agree that we need to schedule shifts so that you know when you're to be sent out, and when you leave it to your teammates. All the better to make sure that somebody is on duty twenty four seven."
April held up her pad again. "Looks like Adam and Fynn have this first shift. Who wants to be on duty when they get back from their patrol?"

Sergio who was on duty in the hanger witnessed the whole thing and approached the group, slipping into the elevator right as it began to shut "I know what you were implying. Don't talk to him that way." Sergio said to April.
"I'm fine Serg," Marco insisted, "And I'll take that shift after Adam and Fynn, if you don't mind Miss Anderson."

April gave Sergio a cold little smile as well, as if asking if he wanted some of her attention too. "I don't believe I'm 'implying' anything." She said smugly, leaving it unsaid that she would speak to anyone however she wanted, and there wasn't anything anyone could do about it. "I'll add you to the list Mister Salazar. Until then, we have things to see and people to meet."
The elevator opened and all the Pilots, plus April stepped out. "I assume you have some business here mechanic." She said gesturing to Sergio, who hadn't pushed any other numbers on their way down.
Across a hallway from the elevator was the 'War Room'. Two stories tall, with one wall made up of monitors, while a balcony of computer monitors and workers sat, and a large oval table dominating the floor below. Currently it was covered with a map of the base, watching as the daikaiju corpse was removed and the crater repaired.
"Hello there." A man in a sharp uniform said. The gold trim and bars on his shoulders denoted his rank, but the general deference everyone in the room gave him as he stood up and walked up the curved stairwell on the side of the room to greet them. "I am Marshal Warrens, commander of this base. This is my liaison with Criterion City below." He gestured at a woman who's hair was turning grey. She gave them a winning smile.
"For those of you who are new, I'd like to welcome you to our home, and thank you for defending it just now." Warrens said, offering his hand to the Pilots to shake hands with each of them in turn.

"I forgot to press the button sorry.' Sergio said coldly, "Gonna go see my girlfriend." He pressed the button for the control room and a the elevator closed he stared daggers at April.
Marco was much more respectful to the Marshal, nodding along politely to what he had to say. He wasn't new, so he didn't need to be welcomed.

Dan fully agreed with Marco. Or, at least, he agreed that April was kinda being too hard and cold. He knew why she was, though. He'd been a pilot long enough to know why. Still didn't mean he liked it. He decided to keep quiet about it, though. Marco'd made the point for everyone and there was no point and provoking the issue further. Unless one of them really wanted a verbal smackdown or something equally embarrassing.
At least he finally got an official welcome from someone. Someone pretty high up, at that. See, it wasn't all bad.

Marshal Warrens gave them each a firm handshake and a smile, even those who had been through here before. Patty even gave a little 'squee'... not because she hadn't already met the man, but because he was calling her a Pilot.
"This is what we call the War Room." Warrens seemed to take over the tour, at least for his area. "From here we try to make long range plans and strategies, similar to the short range plans and tactics that Miss Louise and her team of communications officers will with you. As you can see, we're currently working on dealing with certain, shall we say nests, of kaiju, but daikaiju that you will have to deal with, and smaller kaiju that can be dealt with using more conventional means."
He gave a meaningful glance at the civilian liaison. "All without putting a greater strain on our people or resources. After all, the cities can only maintain so much, and more often than not we're cutting into their populations harder than we'd like in order to keep troops securing supply lines for food and other materials produced here on the surface, where the monsters roam."
"As is tradition, any of you who wish to join in our war room discussions are welcome to. As a Pilot," Somehow he managed to capitalize the word vocally as well, "it is your right to add to the discussions. Right now our main issue is that a few specific breeds of daikaiju have been creating nests. They lay a sizable number of eggs during these cycles, and we may need to assign missions to go clear out these nests before they become a threat to people."
"Commander Xanthony is busy with an investigation at the moment." April said, having stood at the door watching them interact with what amounted to the President, if one considered the world under marshal law. "So the next stop is going to be your class room and briefing room."
April proceeded to do what she could to make certain they were all in one group and Patty wasn't touching anything and Darren hadn't wandered off before ushering them down the hallway.

"Let's make sure the area is secure." Fynn said over the communications network to his companion as he began to set Hund Krieger into motion, following the course outline laid out in the cockpit of his mech, panoramic displays displaying information about his current objective. "I hope the others are alright."
"Is this your first time with your mech?" He asked his companion as he attempted to make chatter, rather awkwardly from his overtly shuddering tone. "I-.. I know some of the others have had their mechs in their life their entire lives and some haven't."

Hund Krieger and Zaltonus set an easy pace heading out from the base, finding landmarks. They passed some rolling fields of grain, which to their sensors read as swamp land despite seeing small vehicles opperating on top of it, harvesting an early crop. These harvesters were clearly armed, as was the processing plant by the field but compared to even Hund Krieger, who was rather small for a "giant" mecha, the machinery looked like little toys, and the workers who waved to them like ants.
Fortunately their path didn't take them over the fields, just skirting the edge as they made their way up into rocky hillsides. The underground cities all had food processing methods themselves, using geothermal power to light large sections of highly efficent food growing gardens, but growing stuff above ground in natural light was a luxury that humanity had yet to abandon, and for the most part, with a few exceptions, the kaiju ignored crops in favor of dining on farmers.
((Past the mountains you come near a coast line, then circle back through a forest of giant trees, before heading through a valley and back to the fields. Additional landscape can be added as you think is interesting. I'll leave it up to Al and Corte to write there adventures. You're free to talk during this time, and if you want to freeform a battle against a Class 2 or weaker kaiju, go ahead and write it out between the two of you.))

May was using this small stop in the, to her, rather pointless tour to try and fix a few stray hairs, looking at herself in the compact mirror she just pulled out.
Darren, however, looked to be staring at everything around him with interest from behind his sunglasses. He hadn't wandered off from the group, at least. --- Adam pressed the pedals in the cockpit to the steel floor as he fiddled with a few buttons, the gigantic Zaltonus moving forward with lumbering, large steps. The titan moved across the path, albeit at a slower rate than the much smaller Hund Krieger.
"Eh?" The brown-haired man replied to the rookie over communications. "Nah, been piloting this thing for a good four years or so."

The next place they saw was the briefing room. The room itself was set up somewhat like a private auditorium and would make an excellent movie theater, if not for the fact that it seated less than twenty people comfortably. The seats were all line up in front of an electronic 'white board' and there was a raised podium off to the side for the instructor to take, as well as a desk for them to organize their materials set even further off to the side. A table could be used for everyone to participate, but normally the seats were staggered, with a small surface for note taking or just putting your materials.
"This is the briefing room." April said, counting them as they all went in. "This is usually where you would meet before going in to sortie. You'll find that the door over there is an express elevator to the higher level of the hangar. If you want to put your piloting gear in those lockers by the door, you can change in the elevator. If you're fast." That also meant they'd be changing in front of everyone else riding up in the elevator. April watched to see who blushed at that idea, or who even realized that's what it meant.
"Next, I'll show you to your barracks. All of you get preferential treatment for your surface quarters, which I hope you all appreciate, so you can pick your own dorms. But for now, let's have a little lesson. Everyone take a seat."
April closed the door and started the screen at the front of the room. It showed a number of images of a daikaiju, the main image being a full body artists rendition while off to the side are a number of images taken from gun cameras of the creature out in the wild.
"This should look familiar to... well to the few of you that scrambled before it was taken down." April said in a tone that almost placed money on them not being able to identify it. "Angelus Aqueous." She finally said. "Notice anything different about this one? No? Then I'll tell..." Patty was bouncing in her seat with her hand raised making little noises. "Yes?"
"It doesn't have the red ball thingy on it's tummy." Patty chirped with a great big 'proud of herself' smile. "Or, at least that thingy has a much smaller red thingy, y'know?" April glared Patty back down to her seat.
"Yes." April snarled, as if admitting it gave her a vile taste in her mouth. "The 'red thingy'. Angelus class kaiju, not all of which are daikaiju, are defined by two general attributes. The first and most obvious is that they all have a core. I want you all to think of it as the creatures sex organ." A number of different Angelus appeared, the images showing off the cores which were always round, jewel-like, and usually on the torso. "The second is that they seem to be vaguely humanoid, usually with wings, and have some sort of psychokinetic power." The images showed the Angelus Aqueous shedding it's fragile looking wings before combat, leaving it with just the oversized shoulder pads.
"But let's focus on the core for the moment." April said. "In most Angelus in the wild the core is medium to small sized. At times almost unnoticeable. But they grow, becoming an easier and easier target on the Angelus, and at a certain point reach a critical mass. You see, despite being a vital organ to keeping the Angelus alive, once a certain size is reached attacking the core becomes suicidal. Sufficient explosive or kinetic force, as with most of your weapons or the anti-kaiju rounds our military uses, will cause the core to detonate, spreading biohazardous material material all over the landscape with a large explosion."
She showed that their fight could have resulted in the destruction of a hangar, if not a sizable amount of the base. "Can anyone guess why these kaiju have such suicidal tendencies? Growing something unwieldy that could easily get them killed and makes for an obvious point of attack?" She asked the 'class' looking over the Mecha Pilots responses. With a tap she brought up a sonar reading once used on one of the cores. There was a shape inside of it, which looked very much like a human(or really any mammalian creature) fetus. "Anyone?"

Dan was there attending the unexpected breifing/kaiju lesson with the other pilots. At first he wondered just what they were doing here. Wasn't the point of a briefing giving them knowledge about something they WOULD be fighting and not something they already beat handily? He sort of realized why they were doing it, but it still felt odd. When April asked her question on the core, Dan reluctantly raised his hand.
"They...aren't animals?" Dan said before realizing how strange that sounded and realizing he needed to clarify. "As in, they don't have the basic survival instinct any animal has? They're just sort of mindless?"
At that point, Dan noticed what was pretty much a sonogram of the kaiju and he got another idea.
"Or it's smart enough to know it's expendable. Do these things reproduce asexually? If so, isn't the core growing kind of like a cell undergoing division? If it can just make another one of itself, it really doesn't need to worry itself being lost. There will be more."
Of course, Dan was just guessing here. He might have been making a total ass of himself, but it felt like it made sense. In his head, at least.

Dan was suddenly struck by the inspiration that Miss Anderson had to practice her glares. Probably in the mirror every night. She had so many of them, with subtle differences that instilled the urge in someone to shut up, or to get on with it. The one she was giving Dan said that this was a waste of time, and that he was a waste of time as well.
The only thing worse than her glare was with her lips curled back into a smile. She had many of them as well it seemed, each of them cruel.
"So which is it Mister Yamato?" April asked with her smile. "Are kaiju 'just sort of mindless'?" Say what you like about Miss Anderson, she couldn't imitate other peoples voices very well, but she could get just enough of it right that you know who the target of her mocking was. "Or are they smart enough to be aware of their bodies and the dangers they could potentially face in battle and plan accordingly?"
Patty raised her hand, much to Aprils annoyance. "Yes."
"Which one gets us in the least amount of trouble?" Patty asked innocently, head tilting to the side. There was a pause. And of course a glare. "I... I mean... well... Aunty Chun said that... if we have to assume a kaiju is gonna act one way... we should assume it'll act the way that'll give us the most trouble. That means we can't plan on them not being mindless and ignoring efforts to bait or fool them... but we also can't ignore that they could also be smart..." Patty was reduced to fidgets and mumbles by the end.
April turned back on Dan. "To answer your question, yes, the Angelus as near as we can tell reproduce asexually, though a second Angelus might might be required to 'fertilize' the core before it starts growing, we don't know for certain. The core growing is like a cell undergoing division, as when it reaches a certain point of growth the orb explodes, releasing the same biohazardous materials that will kill or... do other things... to any humans caught in it, and release the child Angelous which is fully formed and functional if smaller than the parent. In this state the parent will recover from the core burst, rather than it's typical self destruction. So, yes, the Angelous Aqueous, which as the name suggests prefers bodies of water like the lake our base is built in, was going to make our base it's nest. Other kaiju do act differently."

Giselle cleared her throat as she raised her hand. "Are they the only kind of Kaiju that exhibit suicidal behavior?"

"Hardly." April snorted. "More than enough kaiju exhibit behavior that we would consider suicidal. The other pilots would be back long before I could list off all possible suicidal kaiju." She shook her head and called up another image. This time of a daikaiju attacking a city, while a swarm of smaller shapes covered the buildings and attacked what looked to be one of the Chinese Mecha.
"While the Angelous don't seem to have this feature, being singular kaiju and leaving their offspring at the first chance, the most common suicidal kaiju are the ones that form a parasitic relationship with a larger daikaiju. They will swarm and attack to defend their 'home'... even as that home is a larger daikaiju that you engaged in battle. These often require support from conventional forces for you to combat, as you deal with the big threat, and the smaller forces are dealt with by ground forces. Always check your mecha for parasites of this nature before you return to the hangar."
