Lights out. It was time for the patients at the Saint Holt Mental Hospital to go to bed. There were protests of a few- some complaining of a ghoulish looking man in their nightmares, others grumbling about another man, this one clad in blues and colorless skin, in their dreams as of late. The nurses on shift made note to carefully monitor the television again- one of the networks must have been running a horror movie marathon. Rarely something good for the mind in this place. Still, these complaints were few. Most of the patients went to sleep without a fuss. Those complaining of the dreams, however, eventually fell asleep. Those dreaming of the man clad in blue found themselves standing in the middle of a street. The surrounding city was barren, however- at least at the moment. Buildings upon buildings surround them, pointing ever-so-high into the pink-ish sky that surrounded them. It appeared to be sundown, currently. That is, if there was a sun. Even if they looked, these people would find no traces of the sun, or moon for that matter. What they would find, however, was a small, small stretch of land that had some sort of throne on top of it. In front of them were a case of stairs, miles long in fact, that lead to the throne.

Jayne had wanted to stay up later, but he willingly grumbled and allowed himself to be sent to bed. This was the one time that the Mental Ward actually was of use to him. He lay down in the bed as one of the assistant nurses started to plug him in. First the sensor nodes taped to his arms and chest, a few more on his head, then the mask over his face, then a few moments of deep breathing to assure everything was running smoothly. He signaled a thumbs up and the assistant left with a nod.
He was reasonably comfortable, laying in bed like that, his head resting on a contour pillow. His breathing was being forced, so he couldn't really stop breathing, but he could tear all of the stuff off of him in an instant if he needed to. Startle all the people watching over him, just to get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. He rolled his eyes at the thought and tried to relax.
Sleep seldom claimed him immediately. That it claimed him at all was somewhat unusual for him, but reassuring that he was getting better. The machine hummed and sighed in time with his breathing, and his mind wandered. Random things, things that would influence his dreams. He considered himself an expert on dreams, particularly lucid ones. The more random his mind traveled, the less he controlled it, the more relaxed he would be. His train of thought became a monorail, and finally one of those levitating trains. He briefly touched on thoughts before they sent him hurtling into the next thought, no logic or reason to it.
And with that, he was asleep.

With the call for lights out, Violet drudged along begrudgingly towards her room at the far end of the ward, keeping step with one of the younger and more personable nurses that Violet had made her acquaintance with. She enjoyed the stories of her young son and husband, if only to keep her mind off darker subjects.
Pleasantries exchanged, Violet heard the clink as her door was shut behind her, albeit left unlocked. She wasn't aggressive nor dangerous and most of the staff knew her. Plus, it was a bother to get up and unlock a door for a girl who peed every five minutes from her near liquid diet.
Throwing off her distended robe, exposing the brittle thin limbs that Violet made sure to keep out of her vision save for when she was changing, she slid into bed and with almost no wait, into her own subconscious, into a world of her own that at this moment very much so wasn't just hers to lay claim to anymore.
Standing in the middle of a street in a city she had never been in, a far cry from the usual landscapes her subconscious painted for her. Where she had been having the reoccurring dream of her family, when everything seemed brighter, more entertaining and less irritating, instead she was here.
On top of that, she had control. She wasn't a lucid dreamer. She watched from the side in an out of body experience what she was dreaming. Experimentally, she clapped a hand over the side of her face.
The movement was controlled and responded with a resounding clap that had only drawn Violet notice to the fact that she was now out of her usual garments, in something form-fitting. Instinctively, her hands clasped onto her stomach, arms and rib cage.
Fat.
Or at least some flesh on her bones, the full-faced figure of the pretty girl everyone knew Violet as. This dream was shaping up to the be best yet. Is this what all lucid dreams were like?
Maybe she could give speaking a go.
"Hello!?" She called out in a singsong voice, waiting for a response from her subconscious. "Anyone there!?"

The days blended together for Juliet. It wasn't hard, when you were in a boringly grey environment, doing the same menial tasks over and over again... She wouldn't be able to tell when or how she finally remembered getting into bed, or who took her there, or who made sure to take her sketchbook, her pencils and her beanie and set them away on her dresser for tomorrow. She only knew that now it was dark, and she was underneath a heating blanket. She rolled over, and shut her eyes, letting herself drift off to sleep.
The pink sky didn't really affect her much, but that was the first thing that caught her eyes when she entered her dreams. It felt different tonight. Usually, she would have lengthy bouts of nothing before such consciousness, but now it came suddenly like a train roaring down the tracks.
Her form didn't really phase her much, nor did the people nearby. No, there were stairs here, stairs that needed to be climbed. Something called to her.
So she started up immediately.

Hadley had planned to stay up all night. The dreams were really beginning to become too much to deal with. She had burrowed under her covers after lights out was called, with a flashlight and some books, determined to read the night away, and deal with whatever sleepiness she had in the morning.
Unfortunately, her eyes gave out, and she slumped over in slumber, still holding her flashlight.
As the dream world came into view, she looked around at her surroundings, staring at the others present with her creepy wide eyed expression.

The figure sitting on top of the throne snapped as all but Juliet stood, gawking at the city. The sound was loud- loud enough that it sounded like whoever sat on that throne was standing right next to them, and responding to Violet's question.
The ground around the feet of the people still on the ground began cracking. A bit far from them, the ground began falling down to whatever was below them- and the falling ground would soon consume them if they didn't start moving now.
For all intents and purposes, whoever was on that throne was telling them to 'hurry up'.

Jayne wasn't lucid yet. He studied the road they were on, the strange sky and the grey city. His first thought was to get off the street, an instinct drilled into him from childhood. Walk on the sidewalk, not the middle of the street.
But there didn't seem to be any cars about. There didn't seem to be any cars at all. This might not be a street meant for cars, which meant it was perfectly safe to walk on it.
The other girl asked if anyone was there. Looking around Jayne noticed that it was obvious, there were a couple people there. The girl seemed to be addressing further on, up the stairs, rather than the other people here on the street, which meant he could ignore the question.
This wasn't a block party... why were they there? Why were there stairs in the middle of this... it wasn't a street... a paved footpath. Of course. It was a paved footpath, with stairs leading up. They had some of those in town, in the parks. Concrete parks he called them, since any plantlife was often kept contained within small narrow pots, and proper parks had grass rather than pavement.
Then the sound. An answer, but what was it? He tried to get a grasp on what the answer had been, but couldn't tell if it had been words or just a sound. That felt strange to him. It didn't make any sense...
... and now the pavement behind them was cracking. Further on the cracks fell down, as if dropping off into an abyssal void. Jayne studied the sink hole for a bit... how could there be a hole in a city? Shouldn't the buildings be effected? How was the concrete so suddenly dropping away?
Jayne's mind reeled from all the sureality of the setting, it fought to make sense of it, and finally latched onto a conclusion: This was a dream.
This was a dream.
You could control your dreams.
Lucidity floated within his grasp and mentally he reached for it, finding his lucid state. If this was a dream, he wanted to enjoy himself in it. Enjoyable dreams were more restful. Falling into a sinkhole was not fun, but then again climbing stairs were a bit of a chore too.
Simple solution.
Jayne didn't quite jump, jumping implied that he would be putting effort into launching himself upwards. Instead it was more like he gently pushed off of the ground with just his feet. His body felt buoyant. He loved to go swimming, and his body mass was distributed enough that he naturally floated with at least half of his head out of the water at all times. So buoyancy felt natural, it felt like he did in the real world. Which meant that here in the dream, flying came naturally to him.
Drifting in the air he explored his surroundings again. He flew higher, so that he could see what was at the top of the stairs, drifting towards the throne and ignoring the sink hole. It wasn't important now, he could forget about it and it would go away. The throne was the centerpiece of this scene, so that is what he would pay attention to.
