(Right, don't mind the title - it's the title of one of the early-game missions in Senran Kagura Burst and I thought it sounded cool.)
A ninja's best assets are stealth, surprise, and experience.
A ninja's worst weaknesses are emotional connection, fear, and inexperience.
In modern-day time, you wouldn't imagine shinobi to still be a common profession...and, of course, you'd be wrong. There are still many families that aim their children to hone their reflexes and mind to their peak, and wish for them to be shinobi. It's a tradition like no other - one that requires extreme training, along with the fact that you're either born with it, or you're not.
There are two types of shinobi: 'good' and 'bad'. These are, of course, if you're seeing it through the eyes of an average citizen.
'Good' shinobi are shinobi who work to further national interests - basically, they're trained in an academy funded by the government that is seen as a regular academy otherwise (with a rigorous training routine) and once 'graduated', work for the government on missions of protection, espionage, and the like.
'Bad' shinobi are more akin to mercenaries. They work behind-the-scenes for the more corrupt people of the political world, not asking questions, and just killing whoever they need to kill. However, it's not uncommon for shinobi of this nature to even turn on their employers when given the opportunity. A private school also exists for 'bad' shinobi, however, the location is unknown.
No matter their allegiance or morality, shinobi are trained ruthlessly from the day they enter the school - they are obligated to pass a difficult entrance exam - and from days onwards. You get only one chance to pass the exam. If you fail, you are barred from the academy. This is what drives many to the 'bad' side of allegiance...but even then, death is seen as a natural consequence to those who fail.
There are three years in the schools - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 1st year students can range from 12 years old to 14 years old, and 3rd year students can range from 17 years old to 20 years old. You have these three years to pass your final exam, which, again, you only get one chance at passing: if you do not accomplish it, you cannot be an official shinobi. Many who fail are driven mad with anguish.
Shinobi have specific powers which include a 'shinobi barrier' (a literal barrier made to keep fighters in and citizens out that can be dispelled by either side's defeat), 'shinobi transformation' (which usually involves clothing change for the flashier students, and allows students to fully use their secret ninja arts), and the mentioned secret ninja arts, which can vary from swordplay to gunplay to being able to send puppets to fight for you...the techniques are infinite, so long as you have a scroll for it. In addition, shinobi always get a specific 'spirit animal' when first entering the academy, accessed by examining their skills and general psyche. Dragons, rabbits, squid, and foxes are some of the animals that have been selected before.
Shinobi must also balance yin and yang - yin being the usage of long-range weapons and abilities to buff/help yourself, and yang being close range weapons along with offensive abilities. Think of them as defense and offense - shield and sword.
We will be playing the new recruits into ninja academies.
The government-sponsored academy is Itsuki Academy, a normal academy on one side, and a shinobi academy on the other. Shinobi are separated from their 'normal' peers as to not draw attention, and if any questions are asked, they're simply in a very exclusive education program. The academy is well-funded and quite beautiful - if a bit average on the outside.
The other academy is Clandestine Hikage Academy, located deep within forests at an unknown and secretive location. It is built on the outside to seem nothing more than a rural home - nothing more, nothing less - but from an elevator ride down to the main educational level, it has just as much equipment as its counterpart, and just as good education (if a bit stricter).
You may decide whether you'd like to play a student of Itsuki or Hikage, and will be sent out on missions that may involve you encountering your other aligned counterpart. (It'd be especially interesting if we each played a student from both sides for the whole 'counterpart' feel.) There may be further developments in the future, but we'll be going on that basis for now. (By the by, this is all in modern day Japan - but that's fairly obvious.)
Bio sheet.....
Name:
Year: (1st, 2nd, 3rd)

Answer these questions IC-ly:
When I encounter someone in need, my gut reaction is...
If I am injured and see a comrade injured as well, with a rival shinobi approaching on the battlefield, I would take the chance to save (them/myself)
If detected on a espionage mission, I would _________ to escape.
If the only option to succeed at my mission would involve my death, I (would/wouldn't) take it.
I consider my best asset...
If I were able to choose my animal, would it be one of the sky, land, or sea?
That should be it. Let's see where this goes - if you want to know anything else, simply ask.
