Movies also taking the piss out of the source material as often as they can, since those books genuinely are dreadfully written, even if I think this whole site's reaction to shitty YA fic that's only like half a step worse than Harry Potter in terms of quality was weird and unjustified in hindsight. But I've also always been very open that I despise HP the second Rowling tried to "grow with the audience" and just showed she was a hack in a genre and demographic already full of them. Only that Rowling thought she was as good as the mainstream said she was- which isn't really the same vibe I get from Meyer honestly, she strikes me as like... surprisingly humble? Even shit users would rag on her for- like joking about how she'd leave her husband for Edward- is pretty standard "middle aged married couple" shit.
At worst she just seemed to have a bloated sense of intelligence, which isn't really a problem exclusive to her and honestly described not just 95% of the staff here but swathes of the user base too and honestly most writers in general. She's definitely a shithead based on the gossip around racial politics in movie casting, though- she refused to let them cast minorities as anything but lackeys of the bad guys.
KStew and RPatz were very open as soon as they could be that they fucking hated the source material and would do the best they could with it; and in hindsight, that's very much the vibe a lot of the crew and cast in those movies give off. Big paycheck movies that were the cultural equivalent to an MCU movie in terms of how the crew apparently generally doesn't give a shit about the source material, except Twilight movies being so hilariously crap and the disdain for the material that drips through those movies makes them a hell of a lot more memorable because I am not a Twilight fan and therefore it doesn't bother me the way it does with Marvel.
Good points about the movies.
Agreed about SMeyer and Twilight not deserving the hatred they got, including from me. I feel the same way about a lot of things I used to bash back then. I'm not sure why I ever spent so much time on such activities, except for typical teenage insecurity.
Also agreed about Twilight only being about half a step worse than Harry Potter. The biggest difference between them is subject matter (it is much easier to hate on high school vampire romances), with HP's resonating more strongly with more people. The first 3 HP books are fun and satisfying adventure stories, but then the "growing" starts and they start increasing exponentially in length and losing all entertainment value. I also only care to re-watch the first 3 movies for this reason, although the fourth one still had a lot of cool designs and sets.
