The gist: A young woman finds herself homeless and winds up in a shelter/church in a rundown motel run by an unscrupulous woman with a love of money and a willingness to exploit anyone. She and the other unfortunates who are given "shelter" in the church are made to work to "earn" their keep, but it becomes very clear that what they really are to her are highly disposable slaves who are made to do cater to her whim more than actually take care of the motel. The young woman forms some unlikely friendships and alliances (and an inkling of a romance) with the other unfortunate souls that wash up at the motel, which both helps and hinders her a bit, as not all of them are fantastic influences. Without giving too much away, let's just say it progresses to a point where some strange things begin to happen around the motel, and the young woman learns there's something very unusual about the place she's become tethered to.
+ The female character is based quite a bit on me, as the story is about 75% based on my experiences in the past two years (during my absence from the old bored - fun shit went down).
- The result is more a female Sal Paradise than Bella Swan.
- She's a lapsed pagan.
- Due to her surroundings and some heavy shit that happens, she develops a very skewed moral compass.
+ The main male character is psychic.
- That is the only thing supernatural about him, at least initially.
- He has no superhuman strength or god-like good looks.
- He's more a telepathic wideboy than brooding pretty boy.
- When he tells the main female character that he's done some horrible things, he really has.
- He dies fairly early in the story.
+ He comes back as a ghost.
+ Romance
+ A very large supernatural leaning when it's discovered that the motel was built at a very old, very sacred site that's become polluted by the unsavory things that have occurred there.
- Some pretty heavy religious themes - Christianity vs. Paganism among other things, not to mention a huge rally against religious hypocrites.
- Profanity.
- Premarital sex, omg.
- An actual villain that's somewhat sympathetic in addition to being a twisted bitch.
- There's actual themes. I think this would confuse her.
- I have a real functioning vocabulary.
- I've been doing actual research for this. And I'm planning on reading more things for research purposes!
