@lord Lovrina - Oh it definitely is. I just can't decide wether or not the Bury Your Gays is preferable to his stereotypical depiction.
15 books? 0.0 And my friend wants me to read this crap? Not even if she paid me.

That Legacy book has a fantastic cover; very cute. If I didn't know that this series is a load of offensive garbage that cool cover would make me give it a shot.
But yeah, don't expect the series to get better because it really doesn't. Zoey gets to be a bigger whore with every new installment, the vampire council is useless, whenever the annoying characters aren't busy doing nothing they're advertising for tv shows, book series, makeup and home decor (I'm not kidding; it's really jarring to the narration and nowhere near as subtle as film product placement) and it's always phrased "I love me some [insert product here]" no matter WHO is talking about it. I need to visit Oklahoma and figure out if everyone there talks like this because if they don't I bet they all want the Casts dead. I live near Pittsburgh and I don't mind people playing on the whole "Yins" instead of "You guys" and "n'at" instead of "And that", because I only know a few people who talk like that, but if someone wrote a book about Pittsburghians and wrote it like we all talked like that I'd probably send the author hate mail.

The Legacy book does have a cute cover. Though I have no idea if I'll read that far into the series unless my dad finds the books cheap at the used book store. I have a tendency to loose library books.
Where I'm from, some of us do talk like hicks with the "ain't," the "darlin," the "and that," and the "I love me some"; however not all of Southerners talk like that. Some of us, like me, talk with good grammar despite the hick accent. I'm tired of the sterotype of hicks = friendly. There can be some mean hicks!
Also I wonder if Zo ho thinks and believes all girls are like her with the multiple boyfriends situation, and by extension lashing out how 'slutty' other girls are makes her feel more confident about her sexuality (almost like how a bully tries to demean their victims). I wonder if that was the reason why lesbians where never brought up in a positive light and why gay boys are considered girly. It could explain a lot about Zoey's behavior.

If so, then that's more ridiculous bullshit on the Casts' part for making Zoey think that way. I could rant about this, but I'll save myself a wall of text.
On the whole "Bury Your Gays" thing, I bet it was done to be even MORE sympathetic towards Damian. "Oh no, you're gay and your parents won't accept you? Okay here's a boyfrien-- oh sorry he's dead too! Let's pity you some more!"
She treats them both like shit, and it started with the whole "you don't count as guys" nonsense. I'm pretty fucking sure gay guys are still guys. Just sayin'.

I'm glad the Casts haven't thrown in a transgendered character. I mean, really, how would they handle it?
They would butcher it beyond belief and I would actually have to brutally murder them.

They would butcher it beyond belief and I would actually have to brutally murder them. Naw, they won't do it. Trannies are too freaky for them. They'll probably never do a lesbian character either. See, with gay men, they can make them cute and funny, like all the gays you see on tv. Lesbians aren't so cute and funny, transgender are just weird, not to mention that to use a transgender character would mean acknowledging that their strict gender stereotyping doesn't work. The Casts like gay men because they are hot and funny. Trannies and lesbians aren't, so those are safe.

Yeahhh I'm betting that it was done for that reason as well Nebbles. After all, it's easier to just kill characters off than to actually get reasonable drama or tension in a plot. At least, that's always been my experience with bad writing. Can't think of a good story? Kill 'em all. Or at least, enough to make it seem dramatic, mature, and "good" when it's anything but.

Well, I'd really rather not say, because if the folks at TVTropes saw me talking over here, I'd probably never get my account back, despite friends' attempts. And I MAY have been rude, but the thing is the moment I even said anything in the debate, she started in with the baseless accusations and you could practically hear the hoarse breathing and growling coming from her post. She also said "take your complaining elsewhere." Bitch. She was the one who began the conversation to begin with. She started it with my friend, and she took it to the discussion page, and whenever I actually had the nerve to you know, DISCUSS it, she told me to stop complaining. Right, and I got banned and she probably got a pat on the back for sticking it to the h8ter. Also, note that my when my friend was editing, he wasn't "bashing" (unless you're a rabid fanbrat), he just put that the character MIGHT be a Jerk With A Heart Of Jerk, IN ADDITION TO Jerk With A Heart Of Gold. Compare this to Charmed or Twilight, where people get away with saying way worse stuff. But apparently he's so godlike and awesome that he's above legitimate criticism. Which you know, really isn't fair, because he has consistently treated everyone around him like crap, and now matter how much the show TELLS us otherwise, they SHOW us the opposite. He's basically the Edward Jerk Sue of the show.
Anyways, rant aside, I'll go ahead and tell you. It was Drew, aka Drouche, from Degrassi. And you know, this behavior really souldn't surprise me. Whenever I was still forcing myself to watch the show, MOST of the fans would pitch a complete pissy fit if you do NOT bow down and pray to their misogynistic, homophobic God. And then then while shitting a brick house, they would go over and level half-assed complaints at your favorites to get back at you. And no, I'm not exaggerating that last part; they've actually admitted that they bashed my favorites solely because I don't hide the fact that I hate theirs.
And another thing that bothered me is that when you go onto the thread where people to request to get their ban lifted, you see that people get edit banned for the most trivial mistakes. Not "Haha I'm gonna be an asshole" mistakes but, "Oops my bad" mistakes. And the main guy responsible for lifting the bans is a complete snide asshole about it. I've literally seen him say something like "Write a short essay about the rule that you broke, why you broke it, and why it was wrong, and maybe you'll get your edit privileges back." ...And I'm not one of those people who get to go to that thread. I was banned from discussion entirely, which means I can't even get on the forums or discussion pages. I got no warning or explanation for why I'm denied the basic right to defend myself. I honestly wonder why I even want to be a part of the site at all.

^ Probably. Also has anyone else completely given up on reading the series? I honestly do not think I can finish book 5. Yeah...I honestly tried to keep up with the series, but I just gave up around 3 or 4. It's really not the God-awful badness and of it all or how offensive the bloody books and characters get, HoN is just so mind-numbingly boring. Same shit happens in every book; pitiful attempt at a plot buried beneath nonsense, something bad must be stopped ::yawn::, Zoho gets a power upgrade from the Goddess and more tats, everyone kisses her ass. The End. I honestly don't know what book I read last, they are all the fucking same. This is why I stopped with the first Twilight book and never continued. Boring as fuck and predictable (OMG, Bella gets Edward and the perfect ending, totally did not see that coming). I'm telling you, the end to HoN is going to be just as absurd as the ending to Twilight. Really, was anyone honestly surprised that they killed off Jack? He was one of the least important and therefore expendable members of the Zoho fan club. And the Casts probably thought that they needed a death to add 'depth' to their shallow puddles of their books. So they pick Jack. I'm sure they'll eventually create a Jack 2.0 for Damien in later books, so they can have their happy gay couple to prove how progressive they are. I half-suspect that they are going to give the Twins opposite boyfriends (white girl with black guy, black girl with white guy). Can't you just see it? They'll do it to round out their minority cast and add interracial dating because they are just so open-minded that you can hear the wind howling through the vast caverns of their empty skulls.

^ Honestly I would not be surprised if the Casts did that. The books are so predictable that I had to stop because I could feel it eating away at my sanity.
If Twilight was as long as the HoN series, I would have quit after the 4th book. At least Twilight wasn't blantly offensive as HoN, but it was close to it with all the sterotypes.
That was my biggest complaint about the HoN series other than the pop culture references. To be honest at this point, there is no plot to this series. I used to read an entire series, no matter how bad they were, to the end until I came across the HoN books. I honestly have no hopes for the books improving.
If I hadn't found good newer books like Anna Dressed in Blood and the Hunger Games, I would have seriously stopped reading YA novels. A lot of YA novels are becomming more like Twilight and HoN, and I hate to say it that thanks to HoN I have lowered my standards in YA.

Growing up, I had Tamora Pierce and the Animorphs series. Harry Potter came around during my early high school years. Now its Twilight and all its many copies. Instead of role models like Alanna and Dana, Cassie and Rachael, Hermoine and Ginny; girls get Bella and Zoe, Nora and Clary. Though I've heard that Hunger Games is quite good and Katniss is a return to strong female role models. Just never thought I'd see the day when people start defending weak, selfish brats like Bella as being 'strong.' Sheesh.

I agree with the person who said the HON books are all the same. They are really really trying to drag this series out. When I first started the books, I thought it would be 4(?) one for each year they are in the school. But then I found out there's about 12(?) books and was interested where it was going, but I stopped around book 7. It's just the same plot points rehashed over and over. I'm curious to how it will end but cannot bring myself to read it at all.
And don't get me started on the ''teen speak'' dialogue...
|
|
|
Post by Too Funk to Druck{Truthiness} on Sept 13, 2012 16:08:45 GMT -8
what really makes it clear that they're trying to drag things out is the fact that majority of the most recent books (I haven't read passed Burned, so that's what I mean when I say recent) is the fact that they all take place within days of each other, and only consist of one or two days. And it's not like they're chock full of action of any kind for the most part during those days. Most of the time it's whiny teen angst with a backdrop of "omg evil".
and hey, the teen speak is pretty terrible, and it's obvious that they don't really know how teens talk. So, vent away about that.
